Peter Jacksonīs Facebook - Casting Update: Evangeline Lilly is...Tauriel! Can't Post

Yikes! I can finally get back to some postings! We've finished our first block of shooting and moved straight into location scouting. More on that soon... But today, I'm thrilled to announce two new cast members who will be joining us for our second block of shooting.

Evangeline Lilly will be playing a new character—the Woodland Elf, Tauriel. Her name means 'daughter of Mirkwood' and, beyond that, we must leave you guessing! (No, there is no romantic connection to Legolas.) What is not a secret is how talented and compelling an actress Evangeline is; we are thrilled and excited she will be the one to bring our first true Sylvan Elf to life.

I'm also highly excited that Barry Humphries will be portraying the Goblin King, in much the way Andy Serkis created Gollum. Barry is perhaps best known for his business and social connections as the long-time manager of Dame Edna Everage. He has also been an ardent supporter of the rather misunderstood and unfairly maligned Australian politician, Sir Les Patterson. However, in his spare time, Barry is also a fine actor, and we're looking forward to seeing him invest the Goblin King with the delicate sensitivity and emotional depth this character deserves.

Evangeline and Barry, along with Welsh actor Luke Evans as Bard and Benedict Cumberbatch as Smaug, just about rounds out the major casting. I cannot wait to get stuck into these new scenes!

More soon, including a flurry of answers to your questions. Sorry for the delay!

Cheers,
Peter J

So... [In reply to] Can't Post

Is this Tauriel the part originally destined to Saoirse Ronan?

Everyone - please re-read the Facebook sticky and try to follow the two guidelines for reporting Facebook posts:
1) Don't just cut and paste the whole message
2) Include a link in your post.

I know it's exciting and there's always a rush to be the first to report it, but we need to follow good netiquette in the process. Thanks!

I believe Tauriel is Itaril from the old casting call. [In reply to] Can't Post

It seems to me they've changed the name.
No need to describe how much I'm excited about the info that she isn't romantically connected to Legolas. I'm surprised PJ gave us such info.

Is that PJ made clear that this doesn't mean any romantic link with Legolas... Laugh

I think so, too [In reply to] Can't Post

And I'm guessing that there is a good chance that she is Legolas's sister. Her name suggests to me that she is Thranduil's daughter. But maybe not. In any event, it makes much more sense to have a Sindarin name for a Woodland Elf-lady.

"In much the same way as Andy Serkis created Gollum." [In reply to] Can't Post

So does this mean that the Goblin King will be an all-CGI character? Interesting. That would give them range for a lot of less-than-human shapes. Time to have another look at the mystery creature from the sneak peek, perhaps?

She definitely seems to fit PJ's casting for elves on looks. [In reply to] Can't Post

It will be interesting to see how her character fits into everything, and if this character is what Itaril was supposed to be.

She just had a baby recently, I'm hoping she has her energy back in good form for the film. Those first couple of months with a newborn can be rough!

Well, that's [In reply to] Can't Post

two Legolas conspiracy theories knocked down at once. Brilliant. Tongue

I'm finding Dame Edna a little hard to fathom, and Evangeline Lilly I only know from Lost, and unfortunately I didn't like her character so am prejudiced a little against, but she's certainly got the cheekbones for an Elf, and I'm looking forward to seeing what she'll do with it. And I love Elves, so the more the merrier. Wink

Noticed that although Smaug was confirmed, not a mention of the Necromancer...

As far as I know, they aren't together anymore. [In reply to] Can't Post

Evangeline just had a baby with her boyfriend Norman Kali in May. Unless they broke up and she went back to Dom...

It really scares me that I know this. I blame it on my boss who leaves copies of People magazine around her house, which I sometimes flip through while trying to get her baby to sleep. Shocked

Thoughts [In reply to] Can't Post

1) You know, I'm actually more open to the idea of Tauriel than I was to Itaril. Perhaps because I just hated the idea of a little elf girl on Thranduil's Royal Guard. Plus, Lilly is a great actress, and I'm glad there won't be a forced-in romantic angle (especially with Legolas).

However, PJ ends the update by saying that this "rounds out the major casting. Is he implying that this character will have quite a bit to do, or am I looking too far into it? I wouldn't really consider The Great Goblin a major role either (he only has one scene in the book, and it's brief).

2) I have never heard of Barry Humphries up until a few days ago, but he sure looks like a goblin. So on appearances alone, he's a great choice. Just gotta see what he can do.

3) As I've already said, Cumberbatch as Smaug is a stroke of pure genius. Nothing else needs to be said. Though it is curious that PJ didn't mention anything about him voicing The Necromancer - even though that information has been leaked.
