A timed mission... Can't Post

Jack Bauer is issued a duffel bag of infiltration equipment (his PDA, link up to CTU HQ, Glock 21 (with suppressor), 15 full magazines of .45 ACP ammunition, one sniper rifle with 50 rounds, Kevlar vest, flashlight, 5 flash grenades, 5 fragmentation grenades, 5 smoke grenades, a tactical knife, rope, one bar of plastic explosive with detonator, a comm radio, his cell phone with unlimited battery, the ability never to have to use the bathroom ever, and free reign to say "damn it" at any time). He also gets one captured orc to interrogate (interrogation time takes away from Bauer's time limit).

He has a time limit of 24 hours to infiltrate Orthanc and destroy the gun powder Saruman is working on.

A team of 5 Dunedain rangers and one elf from Myrkwood are given full quivers, new swords, long knives, elven cloaks, rope, torches, mithril armor, prior knowledge of the layout of Orthanc and the surrounding area, a general idea of the number and types of forces contained within (includes a general idea of how they are deployed), and the knowledge of Saruman's secret weapon (gun powder). They too have 24 hours to infiltrate the tower and destroy the gun powder. They also get one orc to interrogate (the time is subtracted from their time limit).

For this fight it is assumed that Saruman will not be able to use the Palantir to see his enemies approaching and has not cast any protective spells on the building other than a warning on all the entrances to his chamber, and is not part of this mission unless summoned by his orcs. The gun powder is being held deep underground beneath Orthanc in the war mills. This mission takes place after the creation of Uruk-hai.

So who gets the job done in less time? Jack or the team of Rangers+Elf? This assumes that it does not take Jack exactly 24 hours to solve the problem due to network scheduling (hehe).

Here's what happens ... [In reply to] Can't Post

Jack Bauer contacts headquarters on his PDA for information about Isengard and Orthanc, but nobody at HQ has a copy of "Lord of the Rings" or "Histories of Middle-earth" handy and some idiot has spilled coffee on the Isengard map in "Maps of Middle-earth." So he immediately sets about interrogating his orc for details on their layout and the location of the secret lab. However, he has so much fun torturing the creature that he completely loses track of time and wastes several of his precious 24 hours. After torturing the orc to death, he hurries off belatedly towards Isengard. Outside the city, he shoots a couple of guards on the battlements with his sniper rifle and slips over the walls, then quietly uses his grappling hook and line to scale the tower of Orthanc.

Meanwhile, the Dunedain/Elf team doesn't bother interrogating their orc and kill it to keep it from raising the alarm. Using their superior knowledge of the area and their woodcraft skills, they successfully infiltrate Isengard and make it almost all the way to the secret laboratory high in the tower of Orthanc where Saruman is carrying out his experiments with gunpowder. They avoid discovery by the orcs, uruk-hai and Dunlendings, but are surprised by the sneaky Grima Wormtongue and are soon captured by Saruman. He insists on expounding upon his cunning plan to rule Middle-Earth to his captive audience, with asides on the chemistry of explosives, the finer points of orc breeding, and how he's really improved his image by hiring Leni Riefenstahl to choreograph and film his mass rallies in Isengard. Wormtongue whines that he wants a chance to torture them, too, before they're executed, but Saruman brushes him off.

Just as Saruman tires of his monologue and prepares to turn the rangers into hamburger, Jack Bauer blows the door of the room with a grenade and bursts in with a blaze of gunfire. Wormtongue, the uruk-hai guards, and a couple of imprisoned Dunedain are dropped in their tracks. Saruman uses his wizardly power to whirl Bauer around and toss him in the air, but Jack with superhuman effort manages to pull the pin on a flash grenade and drop it on the wizard. This knocks Saruman over and makes him release Jack and the other prisoners. Jack drops to the stone floor, rolls away, and comes up Glock in hand prepared to shoot. However, the Elf and Dunedain have already attacked the stunned Saruman with weapons seized from the dead guards. Bauer finishes him off with a bullet between the eyes.

A ghostly form of smoke whirls up around them and stretches its hand out to the West, but a wind out of nowhere blows it away. Even the hard-boiled Bauer is slightly freaked out by this, although the Elf takes it in stride.

It turns out that mithril armor resists bullets pretty well, so the Dunedain that Bauer accidentally shot are only slightly injured. Bauer kicks Wormtongue's body into the corner and starts rigging the lab to explode while the Elf and the Dunedain grab Saruman's papers and guard the door. Bauer tosses a fragmentation grenade out the door to clear the corridor and they all begin fighting their way out of Isengard.

With Saruman's death, his control over his minions fails and they immediately begin looting Isengard and fighting amongst themselves. Jack, the Dunedain and the Elf take advantage of the confusion to successfully fight their way out of the stricken city. Behind them, the Tower of Orthanc blows up in a gratuitously large explosion that's completely out of proportion to the amount of gunpowder that was actually stored there.

Jack contacts HQ for a pickup by helicopter while the Dunedain and the Elf fade into the darkness of Fangorn Forest. As he's being airlifted out, Jack sees something that looks like a large tree give him the "thumbs up" sign. Mission accomplished!

With caffeine, all things are possible.

The pity of Bilbo will screw up the fate of many.
