Cumberbatch is a v good actor [In reply to] Can't Post

Sherlock has just won best TV drama and Benedict is nominated for best actor and I think if he is in the Hobbit it would be great.

Other British press... [In reply to] Can't Post

Office star Martin, who is set to play the lead, Bilbo Baggins, in the prequel to Lord Of The Rings, let it slip backstage at the Bafta Awards after the cast and crew of the BBC One show picked up the gong for Best Drama Series.
Asked how filming is going, he said: "Peter Jackson is the biggest kid in the world and he is very, very focused on what he is doing and there is no resting on previous laurels as well and Benedict is going to be in it as well."
Asked what character he was playing, a red-faced Benedict said: "I can't say at the moment."

Do we need a new Drogo Baggins? [In reply to] Can't Post

I could see Cumberbatch as Drogo; but, yes, we still need more Elf characters too (including GALION and probably the rumored ELF-LORD of RIVENDELL).

Voice of Smaug? The Great Goblin? [In reply to] Can't Post

Galion?
The thrush?

Itaril's love interest?

He doesn't match my idea of Bard at all.......

What about the Necromancer!

That would be a big secret, wouldn't it?

Cumberbatch added afterwards that his casting was supposed to have been kept secret and refused to disclose details about his character.

Asked what character he was playing, a red-faced Benedict said: "I can't say at the moment."

If PJ wanted to keep his role a secret, chances are it's a major character. That would point towards Bard or Smaug, seeing as how everyone is dying to know who will be playing those two characters more than anything else.

Of those two characters, I'd say Bard is the safer bet.

Totally agreed! Just what I wanted to write.
No Bard for him please!!! Moreover, I think Depp is Bard now.
Though I don't like idea of BC at all. The Reason is: I dopn't want new Sherlock instead of Hobbit.

The thing is, though... [In reply to] Can't Post

that I'm remembering back to the casting announcements for LOTR. The one character they really wanted to keep wraps on for a big reveal was Gollum. All the "hero" characters were announced as they were cast, or if they were smaller roles, just mentioned along the way. The ones they work to keep secret are the ones they think they will really surprise even the fans.

Now, it's possible that they just wanted to wait and announce Bard closer to his filming date. But it's also possible that he's playing a role that he can't talk about - something that in itself would be a big reveal. They've said that Smaug will be voiced by someone we've already heard twice. If that's true, then he wouldn't be the voice of Smaug. He could be an elf, especially the love interest of Itaril, and they might want to keep that secret due to the uproar there has already been over the prospect of that character. I know the Necromancer is a very slight possibility, but it would certainly be an unexpected twist, and I would love it if it turned out to be true. I'm just having fun floating UUTs (Utterly Unsupported Theories) at the moment. That's what the rumor mill is for, right? Laugh

Honestly [In reply to] Can't Post

I expect the Necromancer will either be a CG creation, or will be be played by Sala Baker and Alan Howard.

Cumberbatch said it was supposed to be kept secret, and Freeman was upset that he "ruined" the surprise. I wouldn't see this slip being a big deal if he was playing someone like Drogo or an elf lord.

No, my money is on Bard.
