I am muy intrigued! [In reply to] Can't Post

The press release says "The events will begin with a new and personal introduction for each film from The Lord of the Rings™ director Peter Jackson captured from the set of his current film, and The Lord of the Rings prequel, The Hobbit, and will be immediately followed by the Extended Edition feature presentations which altogether include nearly 3 hours of additional feature footage carefully selected by Peter Jackson."

Wait! HOLD IT! The EEs until now feature (in order) approximately 30, 40, and 50 minutes of additional footage, for a total of about 2 hours of additional footage.

What's all this talk of THREE HOURS of additional feature footage? Someone tell me before I go from being a Angelic to someone who's hopping Mad

I've gone ahead and bought and printed out tickets already!

So excited! And am I hearing a whole extra hour of footage that wasn't in the films before? @_@

I think the wording is a little misleading. [In reply to] Can't Post

As far as I can tell, they've written this press release for the masses who may not know what the Extended Editions are. Despite their very general time estimate of "3 hours of new footage", I think it's going to be just the EEs that we know, as they're being released on Blu-Ray, not a super special new more-extended version.

Silverlode

"Of all faces those of our familiares are the ones both most difficult to play fantastic tricks with, and most difficult really to see with fresh attention. They have become like the things which once attracted us by their glitter, or their colour, or their shape, and we laid hands on them, and then locked them in our hoard, acquired them, and acquiring ceased to look at them.
Creative fantasy, because it is mainly trying to do something else [make something new], may open your hoard and let all the locked things fly away like cage-birds. The gems all turn into flowers or flames, and you will be warned that all you had (or knew) was dangerous and potent, not really effectively chained, free and wild; no more yours than they were you."

I suspect the same [In reply to] Can't Post

If this was going to offer radically NEW material, I think it would be marketed differently.

Frankly, even though the young teens that go to our yearly trilogy showings kind of irritate me, all three movies (although ROTK is the TE version) together are only around $10. I had to do 5 clicks to get to a price on this one (finally).. and it was $12.95 + 1.00 handling fee (for each one). I must be losing my extreme fandom. It just doesn't seem worth it when I have a much cheaper option. For that price, I'll see what's new to watch on screen.

But are Warner Bros. the distributors for your part of the world? [In reply to] Can't Post

Imdb says Svensk Filmindustri (SF) (2001) (Sweden) release for the theatrical...doesn't that mean you have to look to them for stuff like this? I'm pretty clueless when it comes to what all this means, but I'm thinking Warners doesn't have the rights to do this in Sweden. I'm just guessing, of course.

I wonder though what PJ's introduction will be all about. And I wonder even more if the video will be made available on the www (after each respective showing) for fans who couldn't make it to the showing.

Help! My ticketed theater isn't listed anymore...??? [In reply to] Can't Post

When this was first announced last week (or whenever that was), the links to you to Fandango to buy tickets, and I bought mine then at a theater in Lynnwood, WA (Alderwood Mall 16 or something). Fandango also listed the AMC in Southcenter, but I chose the Alderwood location because it was closer.

Now, following this current link to fathomevents, it doesn't list my theater (though does still show the Southcenter location). Is this just something amiss with fathomevents? Or have I now got useless tickets? Shocked

Just contact the theater [In reply to] Can't Post

I find it interesting that a link for a 'pre-sale' went live this week when the tickets have been available for two weeks now. Oh well, I guess they didn't think fans were smart and could look stuff up. ;-)

Anyhow, because this is a promotion for the release of the EEs on BluRay, my guess is the screened films will be the same EEs that currently exist, and anything new will just be PJ's intro before each film.

I'm going so I can have fun with fellow fans, having just seen the EEs on the big screen in January (except ROTK, which has not previously be screened in a theater in EE format).

No response from Fathom [In reply to] Can't Post

I've both email Fathom Events and posted on their Facebook page asking what source material they will be using for these screenings and if in fact they are just running the Blu Rays.

No response. I think I'll be returning my tickets.

At this point, having watched the dvds for years and in anticipation of the Blu-rays... [In reply to] Can't Post

it would be all about the companionship of fellow fans for me. As long as the screening is of average picture quality, it will be alright for me. And I say this as an avowed picture quality snob.

Not trying to deter anyone from going... [In reply to] Can't Post

...I just want people to understand what they may be in for. I realize that even if they were playing this from VHS and blowing it up on a 50 foot screen people wouldn't care. Hell, with an auditorium full of LOTR fans I don't think I would care either.

I'm just most frustrated that Fathom is not entirely clear what they are doing. I've gone to special rare screenings of movies before and then the theater just ends up playing a DVD. Paying a premium for that is ridiculous especially when you're expecting a professional job.

Just in my opinion, these are some of the greatest films EVER made, and they deserve to be seen in the best possible situation. Paying $12.50 per show when it quite possibly could end up looking and sounding worse than what I can show at home is kind of rude.

That being said, I still have my tickets, and am still considering going just for the fan experience, but I'm quite upset that it will be a half-assed show simply to get it out to the maximum number of theaters.

Seriously, if they are using the pre-show video projectors, I could get a better show if I brought in my PS3 and hooked it up to the 2K projector they use for standard shows.

I'm really sorry if it sounds like I'm whining, but these films really are special to me and I was hoping to relive that awesome day back in Dec 2003 when they did the official LOTR Marathon in select theaters. It would just be a serious buzz kill to see "Please Insert Disc 2 to continue the Fellowship of the Rings" on the big screen.

Gah....I'm such a bitchy whiner...and I'll probably end up going!!! 8^)

No, it doesn't sound like you are whining... [In reply to] Can't Post

you're just voicing your concern. No problems.

But as for the $12.50 price, we have to remember that if that screen wasn't showing an extended (long) movie, it could probably be showing 2 other films and charging accordingly. I've no problems with the price.

But they are so long, I'll probably only see Fellowship in the theater (for the PJ introduction--hope it's not different on the other two, and I miss it). I'm not as young as I was when Trilogy Tuesday took place.

Good idea... [In reply to] Can't Post

I may also go to check out the PJ intro on FOTR. I'll judge the quality and maybe return for the other two. I'd really like to see ROTK:EE on a nice big screen.

Would also be cool if there was a cool memento that was given out for the screenings. Doubt that would happen but the Sideshow 3-film cel trinket from 2003 was a nice touch.

why would you assume they were not showing film prints? [In reply to] Can't Post

FOTR and TTT exist on film prints in the EE format, and there were 100 or more copies made for the original Trilogy screening. ROTK is the only one that does not, and with this promotional event, I'm not sure what format they may be showing. Maybe it's the BluRay, maybe it's Digibeta, maybe it's HDCam, and maybe it's a brand new 35mm cut of the ROTK EE. We may not know for sure until June 28. But I'd wager good money the other two will be the existing prints, and therefore a better viewing experience than whatever it is you were expecting.

Because this event is being put on by FATHOM EVENTS... [In reply to] Can't Post

Fathom Events puts on the streaming events at AMC theaters. They do NOT use 35mm prints. They do NOT even use the Digital Cinema projectors that AMC uses for their normal digital screenings.

Fathom uses the "pre-show" video projector that they run the commercials and "first look" shorts on.

Fathom did special screenings of several films in the past (Poltergeist, Wizard of Oz, Blue Brothers, The Exorcist) and these were all done on video. If you are concerned about this, please Google fathom AMC poltergeist and you can read other fans reviews of what they saw.

I've contacted Fathom asking what format they will be running and I've gotten no response. If they were indeed running 35mm prints, or high quality 2K digital cinema, they would have responded. I'm fearing that because they are basically ignoring my question, they are running something of low quality.

Besides, there are WAY more theaters running this event than ran the special Extended Edition event in 2003. There is no where near enough 35mm prints of the extended cuts to equip all the theaters that are participating in June.

Are we sure it is a Fathom event? [In reply to] Can't Post

I bought my tickets through Fandango last week (before Fathom announced their involvement). Even now, when I go to Fathom's site, and try to look up my theater where my tickets are for - it is NOT LISTED (Alderwood Mall 16, in Lynnwood Washington). Yet, when I go to AMC, I still see my theater and it is still scheduled with the event. This sounds to me like some theaters are not part of Fathom's system (???) yet are still showing it. How's that going to work then?

I was getting the impression that Fathom (and others) are just being used to market and sell the tickets - but I'm not sure who is actually initiating the whole event.
