Casting News! Thranduil and Fili

PJ has just this minute updated FB. Here you go guys: I'm very pleased to be welcoming two new cast members to our team. Dean O'Gorman will be playing Fili. Dean's a terrific Kiwi actor, who I am thrilled to be working with. He's recently been in an excellent TV series down here called "The Almighty Johnsons", and I should let fans of that show know that our shooting schedule allows Dean to continue with a second series next year. Dean will be joining us next week. I'm also pleased to announce that Lee Pace will be playing the Elven King Thrandruil. Casting these Tolkien stories is very difficult, especially the Elven characters, and Lee has always been our first choice for Thrandruil. He's going to be great. We loved his performance in a movie called "The Fall" a few years ago, and have been hoping to work with him since. When we were first discussing who would be right for Thrandruil, Lee came into mind almost immediately. It's been a great week, and I'm looking forward to the next few. It's going to be interesting ... More soon. Cheers, Peter J Source: https://www.facebook.com/...ws/10150239464391558

I like it. I expected someone older to play Thranduil. Lee is actually 2 years younger than Orlando Bloom. But I like the choice a lot anyway.

So, the father will be played by a younger actor than the son?

Pace is younger than Bloom. Sure, elves are not supposed to age but still...

hah! That's the kiss of death for me. (Pun intended). Oh well. I've never met Thranduil. That I've never seen Lee Pace before either will make it easier for me to accept him as Thranduil.

I don't know either actor. I do note that Lee Pace is actually two years younger than Orlando Bloom though, so that should be interesting to see how they play the father/son dynamic (though he does look less boyish than Bloom- a bit more adult). He's plainly up for anything hair and make-up can throw at him given that he's played a transexual showgirl and i daresay Breaking Dawn will be quite good training for Thranduil. Looking at pictures of him he does have a good line in doleful dignity, a whiff of Ryan Gosling perhaps. Not my first choice necessarily (i hadn't even heard of him to be honest), but he'll do. As for Dean O'Gorman, well obviously i'm gutted, truly gutted Rob Kazinsky won't be able to play the part, but Dean O'Gorman is a fair enough replacement. I have absolutely no idea of this guy to be honest so i really can't pass judgement, not even on his look for the part since he's going to be under prosthetics, so good luck to him i suppose. ...which is good news to me. Very interesting indeed. Also good that they've cast Fili quickly as well. O'Gorman is a bit older than Rob and looks to be more experienced, having several series under his belt. I also see that Lee Pace has been nominated for a few Golden Globes, and an Emmy. So his acting is definitely up to par.

I'm genuinely surprised that they didn't cast an older actor for Thranduil. But then again, I suppose it is more faithful to Tolkien's text for Thranduil to be youthful-looking. Couple of random thoughts: - While Pace is two years younger than Bloom, I would say that he looks older than him. I don't see a problem, personally. - I've never heard of O'Gorman, so I can't comment on his talent. Pretty good likeness to Turner, though. - Hugo Weaving is going to be Elrond. A confirmation would be nice, but not necessary. It's all but guaranteed at this point. Overall, glad to finally get more announcements.

And Orlando hasn't even been conrmed yet. And even if he is, I think its alright. These are elves you're talking about. Not to mention there's finally an American in The Hobbit.

I like Lee Pace, though. I didn't watch Pushing Daisies, but I heard lots of raves, and I enjoyed him very much in Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day, so I'm looking forward to seeing what he does with Thranduil. I like the idea of Elves looking like they're in their prime, so I have no objection to his age as long the acting is up to par. I don't know anything about O'Gorman, but best wishes to him and I hope he finds his feet quickly. It's got to be a bit stressful joining a large cast which has already been together for a while.
Silverlode "Of all faces those of our familiares are the ones both most difficult to play fantastic tricks with, and most difficult really to see with fresh attention. They have become like the things which once attracted us by their glitter, or their colour, or their shape, and we laid hands on them, and then locked them in our hoard, acquired them, and acquiring ceased to look at them. Creative fantasy, because it is mainly trying to do something else [make something new], may open your hoard and let all the locked things fly away like cage-birds. The gems all turn into flowers or flames, and you will be warned that all you had (or knew) was dangerous and potent, not really effectively chained, free and wild; no more yours than they were you." -On Fairy Stories

Wow never would have thought of him for the role of Thranduil but he's wonderful actor. If you want to see him in something very good check out The Fall.

But I remember Lee Pace now! I like him. He was in Wonderfalls, a tv series I loved that was cancelled, and In Mrs. Pettigrew Lives for a Day -- he was great in that! Wow, now I'm all excited! And as to his being younger than Orlando... actors play older and younger than their age all the time. What matters is if they have the skill to do it. From what I remember of his acting, I think he has the stature to play such a character. I also find it interesting how Dean O'Gorman does seem to look a bit like Kazinsky. The casting is really sticking to a certain look for Fili, it seems. And I know I've probably seen him, as I've watched Xena, Hercules, and Legend of the Seeker. I'm going to have to go back and look to see if I remember him. Congratulations to both of these actors! May this experience be something wonderful and amazing for them!
