''Sam put his ragged orc-cloak under his master's head, and covered them both with the grey robe of Lorien; and as he did so his thoughts went out to that fair land, and to the Elves, and he hoped that the cloth woven by their hands might have some virtue to keep them hidden beyond all hope in this wilderness of fear...But their luck held, and for the rest of that day they met no living or moving thing; and when night fell they vanished into the darkess of Mordor.'' - - -rotk, chapter III

May the grace of Manwë let us soar with eagle's wings!

I didn't even want to go see FOTR [In reply to] Can't Post

I was worried that it would be all wrong. It was December and I had so much to do. I had seen maybe 30 seconds worth of photos, and remembering that they got the Shire "right", but still didn't trust that the job would be done right. Then I saw it, and you couldn't keep me out of the theaters!

now far ahead the road has gone
down from where all began' -FOTR-

and through all the world has changed
the ages come and go with time
and yet those remain unchanged

over the sea...

and through it all we remain strong and true
for eternity is bonds unbroken
beyond the sea...

We have a strawberry patch! [In reply to] Can't Post

You can come and sit in the middle of it and keep the chipmunks away, because they eat all of them and we don't get any. They usually take one bite and then go pick another one. When my cat was alive, we didn't have problems with chipmunks. We would just find their little feet on the patio! The only year we got some was the last time we had 17 year locust. Everything was eating them and left the fruit for us.

Yes we can grow butternut squash, but I like acorn squash better, so that is what I grow!

I really recommend it. [In reply to] Can't Post

When I've been at tOR.N-moots, I've brought some lime juice along and made lime coke for anyone who wanted one. I've found a number of bars (or restaurants with bars in them) will indulge me and make them as well, since they generally have the ingredients.

But you can get Rose's sweetened lime juice at any grocery store I've ever been to, so it's easy enough to make on one's own. Try it sometime! =)

We have decent luck with cardinal climbers [In reply to] Can't Post

Most spots in our yard get some sun throughout the day... just not for many hours a day. The cardinal climber does not grow as well as it used to.. before all the shade creating items entered our life. But it does grow and it does bloom. It just blooms really, really late. By time it starts blooming, they're talking frost. lol.

We do like rhubarb but the plants we have here are just not good producers. We bought this house from a woman who had only lived in it less than a few years. We heard the family who lived here before her had 10 people here and there were rats in the garage (which was torn down and replaced before we moved in). We *think* she bought the house in bad shape and remodeled it for resale. The large family didn't pay their water bill for at least 10 years (which means we got saddled with it) so they lived here at least that long. So, we think the rhubarb and the peonies were not planted by either family but probably by the original homeowners. (and we've been here 27 years so we're talking at least 40 years ago) The peonies just don't ever do well and the master gardener we had in said sometimes they just get too old. The rhubarb produces really skinny, fairly short stalks and goes to seed almost immediately. We're lucky to get one good pie out of it. So, I think we're considering digging both the rhubarb and peonies out. Whether we replace them or not depends on how ambitious we are. What used to be the back garden (before the maple got planted making the area too shady) has turned into a holding pen for extra plants and all the branches that fall off the birch (till we can bundle them up for pick up), charcoal dump (from the grill) and all the dirt that's been dug up from someplace else. To do much with that area, we have to do something with ALL of it. We keep talking about it. We did redo the front of our house last year with hosta!

Our ground is so bad, [In reply to] Can't Post

that we have to fertilize the rhubarb a lot. We compost and use purchased organic fertilizer. Our property used to be a cow pasture and was very compacted. This was probably 75 years ago now, but the clay here compacted well!

I've been making my own 'soda' recently.. [In reply to] Can't Post

by adding some of that syrup you're supposed to put in coffee into carbonated water. I can make it less strong and sweet. Using Rose's for that seems like a perfect idea. I'm going to buy some the next time I see it and try it.

I don't much like Coke. It has nutmeg in it. But I could try it with Pepsi.

Not much to report, pretty typical week

I have to present my summer research at the weekly Chemistry/Physics seminar this afternoon. I'm really tempted to put in a slide that says something like "and from this graph we were able to determine the Theory of Everything" TongueCool

..The land of long-forgotten name:
......no man may ever anchor near;
..No steering star his hope may aim,
......for nether Night its marches drear,
..And waters wide no sail may tame,
......with shores encircled dark and sheer.

..O! Haven where my heart would be!
......the waves beat upon thy bar
..For ever echo endlessly,
......when longing leads thy thought afar
