Filming in a cave. [In reply to] Can't Post

We saw Andy Serkis wearing the motion capture suit the other day, so maybe it wouldn't be too far fetched to assume they are filming Riddles in the Dark.

In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit...

I am following the blog! [In reply to] Can't Post

Everyday. I hope Sir Ian will keep up with it as he gets busier on the set. Always great read and packed with information. Can't wait to see Gandalf's updated look. BTW is this the first time Ann Maskrey is mentioned as a costume designer for TH or did I miss some announcements on TORN? (I try to keep up with all the news here, but life sorta gets in the way Wink)

And filming the cave scenes (makes sense with Andy Serkis being spotted in the MoCap suit), all dwarves and their scale doubles on set. After reading all the doom and gloom of 2010, what a difference a year makes.

Exciting isn't it? [In reply to] Can't Post

I think he updates it pretty regularly. Historically, he was pretty diligent about updating his blog during the LOTR trilogy production.

I believe Ann Maskrey was mentioned in a Warner Brothers press release about The Hobbit back in mid to late February... sorry... fuzzy on the dates... but I remember it being in a press release.

The part that really excited me [In reply to] Can't Post

Quote
The original costume I wore in LOTR hangs rather mournfully on a stand by the camera. I can’t wear it in The Hobbit, because it has been noted “of historic status.” Ann has made two changes which few may notice but please me because they revert to Tolkien’s introduction in Fellowship of the Ring, where he mentions a silver scarf and black boots. In the film, a scarf appeared just once, tied to Gandalf's cart at Hobbiton but oddly not thereafter. I now have a substantial, magic-looking silvery scarf to wear and act with and perhaps find some part of its own to play. I've already twisted it into a stylish turban. And, as per JRR Tolkien, below the familiar gown, a new pair of black boots may be spied. They will not look new of course. They are riding boots, the sort that can be pulled on in a hurry. Gandalf is often in a hurry. His previous boots were laced and needed Emma to get on and off. Not good for a wizard on the run. And they were grey not black.

The changes are small, but they'll make all the difference for me. Can't wait to see a more faithful-looking Gandalf the Grey.

Makes me wonder what other changes (for the better) [yes, I know that "better" is a matter of your own opinion] in the returning characters, not only in costume but also speech, mannerisms, magic, etc might be made.

Definitely looking forward to it.

Well [In reply to] Can't Post

Other than the inclusion of the silver scarf and black boots, the one thing I have they change regarding Gandalf the Grey is the beard.

I've come to terms with that fact that we're not getting a beard down to McKellen's waist, and I understand why we won't. Plus, McKellen's update on March 29th pretty much confirms that it'll be the same length as FoTR.

What I didn't like about the FoTR beard was that it was really thin, really scraggly, and really fake-looking. I really hope they go with a thicker, bushier beard this time around - as that's the kind of beard I've always seen Gandalf portrayed with.

It depends on which version of The Fellowship Beard we get. [In reply to] Can't Post

It looks different in different sequences. If it is as we saw it when he talks with Bilbo in Bag End, when he FIRST greets Frodo, with Frodo jumping into his arms as he sits on the cart, when he steps through the door after bidding Bilbo farewell and looks at The Ring on the floor of BagEnd, and when he advises Saruman on the dangers of the Pallantir, in THOSE scenes, the beard looks good. Long enough and thick enough that I can put aside it not being exactly waist length. It gets the point across and the image across well enough. There are plenty of other areas where it looks inadequate, but I imagine they will sort it out.

My big fear regarding the beard was that they would have some hidden prefference for shorter, and would use the distance between now and fellowship, the time gap between events, and the horrible shorntess of his Goatee in TTT and ROTK, as wiggle room to squeeze him into a beard half way between the ROTK length Goatee, and the Fellowship Beard.

It seems clear now that they are at least sticking to full Fellowship Length, AND, that Sir Ian himself along with others think it should be a little longer. So once they have done the screentest, if anything they seem likely to add an inch or two rather than take it away, and that is all to the good.

Ugh [In reply to] Can't Post

I hated how they shortened Gandalf the White's hair and beard. Their attempts to make him look rejuvenated/reborn ultimately cost him his wizardy appearance.

Its one of the many reasons I am thrilled about The Hobbit. [In reply to] Can't Post

the Image of Gandalf The Gray, Hat, Full Beard et al, shall now fully supercede and dominate the shamefully goateed image of The White in terms of screentime and publicity.

I love these little costume tweaks [In reply to] Can't Post

I am strangely pleased by the news of Gandalf's silver scarf and black boots. I wonder what other characters will have their wardrobes altered? I'm still holding out for Gollum's tattered waistcoat...

Edit – wait a minute. What about Gandalf's blue hat?

The tall, pointed, Blue hat is iconic. [In reply to] Can't Post

I wouldn't worry for a second about it going anywhere. I love the inclusion of the scarf, and the correcting of the boots colour. My biggest concern as far as The Wizard's appearance has been that the hair gang, in consideration of how carried away they were in trimming back his beard to a goatee in TTT and ROTK, might decide to give him a "stylishly" (to their minds, being deceived Wink) shorter and more trim beard for The Hobbit. Something halfway between the "close enough to pass," beard of Fellowship with the "who the hell set Edward Scissorhands loose on Gandalf," beard of the following films. My hope is, after reading the description in The Hobbit, they will try to make the beard as lengthy and full as possible, without making it so strikingly different from The Fellowship version that a casual viewer not specifically focusing on it could pick up the alterations at a glance. I don't know that my concerns on that front have been completely voided, but since reading some of his posts, I have at least been able to put away any fears that the hair team might make any drastic shave backs from the beard as it appeared in Fellowship.
