So - the final Tolkien adaption in our lifetime Can't Post

Will be The Hobbit. We should enjoy this while it lasts because after december 2013, there aren't exactly many Tolkien books out there standing in line for a film adaption. The rights to those books will expire some day, no doubt, but it will probably be too late for us here.

It feels strange that we will soon see the last glimpse of Middle-earth, but it feels great that the greatest Tolkien-adventure of them all will close the circle.

The greatest adventure is what lies ahead.

Maybe, you never know how the next generation of Trustees will handle [In reply to] Can't Post

the affairs, after all, the charity derives significant income from the movies so a future adaptation of The Children of Hurin (several movies in that tale) or other selections are still possible. The rights will be in effect for a long time....I posted earlier but it it something like 125 years from publication....unless there is a wonder anti-aging elixer I won't be around.

Not necessarily. [In reply to] Can't Post

I mean, there have been five adaptations in my lifetime, and I'm not a half-century old yet. Technology continues to advance. Who's to say that someone won't want to give the story another shot someday with some new cool technology?

I haven't resigned myself to this being the final adaptation in our lifetimes... [In reply to] Can't Post

I still have some life left in me, Lord willing, that I will be able to see many renditions done.

I hold a special place in my heart for Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy and most certainly The Hobbit films to come.

But I don't believe they will be the last in my lifetime... and it remains to be seen what the inheritors of the Tolkien Estate will do when the current company passes on (said with respect).

that's what I thought [In reply to] Can't Post

The animated adaptations were all done shortly before I was born, but that wasn't all that long ago. Wink Look at all the "reboots" and "remakes" of older movies we're getting now. In another couple decades when the industry goes through another "remake" phase, I bet Lord of the Rings will be high on the list.

For instance, on the planet Earth, man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much -- the wheel, New York, wars, and so on -- while all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man, for precisely the same reasons. -- Douglas Adams

I don't think any filmmaker would want to remake Lord of the Rings [In reply to] Can't Post

For the same reason that I can't see any director ever stepping up to remake the original Star Wars trilogy, or the Godfather trilogy. There are some films that you just don't remake.

However, I think it's possible (but unlikely) that we might see some sort of future release of Jackson's trilogy with "tweaks" (like the 1997 re-release of the Star Wars trilogy), but I think that's a long way off, like decades off.

How would such a verision be funded? [In reply to] Can't Post

I mean, just creating an acceptable Gollum demands a big budget, if not huge. I'm not sure anybody in that business would be willing to cough up so much money for TV, for a serious attempt of a LOTR verision.

The price of Gollum [In reply to] Can't Post

...has already been spent, at least on the development. The cost of using mo-cap technology is quite within range: whole movies are being made with it.

A long series would be expensive, but given the track record of the movies, it would be a guaranteed hit, so not so much of a gamble. But it would take one of the cable channels, like HBO or SciFi to do it right. The networks would botch it.

I'm still holding out for the attainment of immortality through scientific means. [In reply to] Can't Post

I like to think that medical advances in the coming decades will allow us to extend our lives significantly, so I haven't quite given up on the prospect of seeing some Silmarillion films. (And that's not taking into account the possibility of more laid-back heirs gaining control of the Tolkien Estate.)

That's an entire TV series from Weta with everyone in it mo-capped, so using the technology is doable.

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

"Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded b*****d with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.

I understand the general association of Lord of the Rings... [In reply to] Can't Post

to other trilogies... like the aforementioned to a certain degree... but the difference here is that... Star Wars is completely locked down by George Lucas. He is in effect the Tolkien Estate for that Universe...

As long as the film rights are still available... then I can see them (Tolkien works) being remade for many years to come.

The Tolkien Estate couldn't be more different from George Lucas [In reply to] Can't Post

One loathes merchandising; the other lives for it. The only parallel is that both entities are largely in control of their respective properties – apart from that, everything from their philosophies to their business models are antithetical.

My point was that the Tolkien work is more available (concerning The Hobbit and LOTR) for filming. George Lucas won't allow anyone else to film Star Wars.

I didn't mean that post to seem angry or reproachful – I felt nothing but my usual detachment when typing it. I was simply pointing out what I thought were some oddities in your analogy. I was not attempting to defend the Tolkien Estate from your comparison with George Lucas; I consider both of their extreme attitudes to be as bad as the other.
