That is, 32 people identified. They have managed to rescue a number of people from a couple of the worst affected buildings overnight. I am sure the death toll will rise, but things are still unclear at the moment. It will be helpful when daylight comes, which won't be far off now.

I keep thinking about him and wondering if he is in amongst all the collapsing buildings. He is an advanced paramedic and also has search and rescue experience, so I'm not sure exactly what his role will be.

What a long night it must have been. If the shaking lets you, can you nap? I assume you won't be going to work! A little peaceful bit of the Shire for you--maybe you can sit by the banks and rest for awhile: http://www.flickr.com/...5468812638/lightbox/ And here is my dog's safety-snuggly advice from my dog: "Try this! After local disasters such as floods, we've lost only one cat permanently (perhaps a coyote got him). Sometimes, however, they've been AWOL for up to two weeks and turned up in a strange neighborhood the finders located us through the rabies license tags. {{{Nienna}}} {{{kitty}}}

that you're sitting under a table with the house shaking around you and the thing that occurs to you to do is keep your TORnsibs informed about your state. I was kind of amazed to see so many Christchurch TORnsibs checking in here in the midst of the chaos (amazed and relieved, of course). I've heard uninformed people say that online communities aren't really communities. I beg to differ.

I hope the search-and-rescue dogs don't get too freaked out by aftershocks, though I'd imagine they'd have some sort of training for that

my radio is my alarm clock. And the news I woke up with this morning was the news of NZ and the deaths. So you can image I was wide awake straight away. I just saw the first moving images of the earthquake on tv, oh my, it almost brought me to tears, all those people hurt. Terrible. I hope the earth will stop shaking and give the helpers time to help everybody and save those who are trapped underneath the rubble.
