Living in So Cal, which is also earthquake country, we all live with this possibility every day. I rarely take the time to prepare an emergency kit, but I always mean to each time it happens. One of these days, I'm going to pay attention to that inner voice. For now, I just know to check water, gas and electric to avoid leaks and explosions, then go comfort the cats, picking up anything that might have fallen down along the way.
So glad to hear that various TORnsibs are OK, hope to hear from more tomorrow.

Another Chch person here.
I was on a bus when it struck and it felt like the bus was mounting the kerb... lots, on each side! Made it to university but came home straight away after meeting up with my SO.
There have been 65 deaths reported, with lots of people still trapped and more deaths likely to be reported over the next few days. Check out NZ Herald for news and pictures. It's so crazy.
I've just been saying to my SO and friends - it's very surreal for me. I am fine, unscathed, my house is fine, I have power, internet, food, water, etc. and I'm just going about my normal evening routines - while in other parts of the city, people are worried, stressed, injured, homeless or dead. I'm just hoping that the amount of fatalities doesn't increase any more!

This is awful. I hope your cat comes home soon, but am very relieved you're all right.

Just got the power back on.
It is terrible, I can hardly believe it's true. I have only just had my first look at the news on tv.
My house seems okay, dog hysterical but okay, cats lurking around.
Thankfully everyone at my school was unharmed, but it took until about 5.00 to get all the children safely reunited with their families.
Still having regular shakes.
