I'm the one down on my knees thanking God! I live in Sydenham surburb and we're one of 3 suburbs with power - all others aren't expected to get their power back for quite a while. I have a few signs of things that might be a problem in the future (quite a lot fo water on the floor in the loo for example) - but I'm a lucky person!

I'm glad to hear you're okay as well Nienna. I read that the epicenter of the quake was only 3 miles away from Christchurch, which explains why it was so severe. The earthquake we had here in the San Francisco area in 1989 was stronger, but the epicenter was maybe 40 miles away, so in some ways, the damage probably wasn't as severe (though severe enough). Having been through that experience, I really feel for the people of Christchurch. My dad spent time stationed there when in the Navy, and he loved it so much. I had an opportunity to visit a few years back and found it to be such a beautiful city. I really hope everyone gets the best possible help during this time. I read that a major hospital had to be evacuated and that there were so many injured, that they've run out of ambulances to transport those in need of medical care. I especially hope the children are okay, since so many of them were likely at school and away from their families. My best to anyone from NZ who reads this. Please take care of yourselves and I hope you recover well and quickly from this.

where it enters the house? We have faucets right where the pipes come in from outside the house where all the water to the house can be shut off temporarily, and there might be one just in the bathroom as well, kinda just behind the toilet--ours has one. I'm just thinking of water damage prevention . . . I'm thanking right along with you!!!

Tragic about the cathedral, and even more tragic if lives have indeed been lost. I hope our 'sibbies in the locale check in when they get a chance. My thoughts and prayers are with the people of Christchurch. This is distressing indeed.

Thank you for your advice - I'm hopeless with such things but my neighbour's son is visiting and he's a builder. He's giving us all sound advice. I seem to have damage on the tile roof - hoping we won't have rain for a while! As I was walking home and trying to dodge the liquefaction I couldn't help but see the damage to homes - I was trying to prepare myself for what I might see. Such a relief to find the home stable and looking fine. And I have picked up broken glass so things are looking better.

Thanks for letting us know - and especially letting us know that you're alright. Here's hoping our other sibs are too.
Silverlode "Of all faces those of our familiares are the ones both most difficult to play fantastic tricks with, and most difficult really to see with fresh attention. They have become like the things which once attracted us by their glitter, or their colour, or their shape, and we laid hands on them, and then locked them in our hoard, acquired them, and acquiring ceased to look at them. Creative fantasy, because it is mainly trying to do something else [make something new], may open your hoard and let all the locked things fly away like cage-birds. The gems all turn into flowers or flames, and you will be warned that all you had (or knew) was dangerous and potent, not really effectively chained, free and wild; no more yours than they were you." -On Fairy Stories

As I walked home along the major streets I found the people to be almost in shock and had no time to talk to fellow-walkers. I was walking along the street at a pace to keep up with the cars - the traffic jams were terrible. When I reached my residential suburb, the difference in attitude was significant. Each person I met stopped to see if I was okay and had people to go home to. It helps enourmously as you're wondering what your'e going to see when you do get home.

anyone who has been to chch knows what a lovely, benign (most appropriate word that comes to me) little city it is i was there for three years but am up on the north island now, and dont recall a single quake watching aerial video at the moment, and the major damage seems limited to about several buildings which have been *completely* flattened, and in some cases have caught fire with reports of people trapped no doubt lots of residual damage and other significant damage they are asking people not to use the phone, and there is an ambulance shortage the people of chch absolutely do not deserve this (which goes without saying, but especially given the september quake) awful, frankly it p's me off in terms of feeling helpless, and in terms of what they have gone through down there since september

I see reports that ten significant aftershocks followed over the next five hours. Can't imagine what's it's been like. Here's hoping that our Kiwi members not only came through unscathed but stay safe until this settles down.

As soon as I got home my neighbours helped me to quickly put any remaining crystal and valuable ornaments on the floor, sofa or anything else that looked safe. The aftershocks are frequent and we never know how bad the next one will be. I have so much to be thankful for - waiting like everyone else to hear that others have coped just as well.

Very thankful for my neighbours - everyone looking out for others. Going back to work is a daunting thought. The books fell from shelves - we have about 32,000 and when the police made me leave they were piled in heaps on the floor, some about 2ft (60cms) deep. I stop my snivelling however when I think how bad it would be if we'd lost a staff member.

and I can't believe what I'm seeing. Please be safe, all of our sibs and your families. And thank you for checking in, Nienna! Edited to add: Last year's 7.1 earthquake was at a depth of 33km; this one was just 5km deep.

And that your house fared well too. Just be careful please.
''Sam put his ragged orc-cloak under his master's head, and covered them both with the grey robe of Lorien; and as he did so his thoughts went out to that fair land, and to the Elves, and he hoped that the cloth woven by their hands might have some virtue to keep them hidden beyond all hope in this wilderness of fear...But their luck held, and for the rest of that day they met no living or moving thing; and when night fell they vanished into the darkess of Mordor.'' - - -rotk, chapter III May the grace of Manwë let us soar with eagle's wings!
