Shallower and closer to the city than last time. Deaths confirmed. [In reply to] Can't Post

Deaths have been confirmed by emergency services - numbers not yet known. Serious injuries. Severe damage.

This is just heart-breaking.

Oh, my goodness! [In reply to] Can't Post

What a terrible time the folks of Christchurch have been having, for a long long time. An invasion of dragons might have been easier. My thoughts and prayers are with all our Christchurch sibs.

I'm glad that the Cathedral isn't "flattened" as the first reports claimed, but it's clearly very badly damaged with the spire fallen. How very sad. I hope it can be rebuilt.

Thoughts and prayers to those in Christchurch [In reply to] Can't Post

I live in California...the area most famous for earthquakes, and we rode out a tough one on Easter Day last year that was by far the worst i've ever been in. Pictures came off the wall and hanging lights were swaying, but nothing like this. Let's hope there isn't severe aftershocks.

I feel so badly for them, this is just too much!

Rushing thoughts and prayers their way, but I know we're going to be ill at ease until the 'sibs in that area start checking in...Unsure

Agree [In reply to] Can't Post

Not sure if the building codes are as good as those in Japan and California; but a 6.3 shouldn't cause a lot of widespread damage. But, I saw a news report that much of downtown Christchurch has severe building damage. Unsure

We have very good building codes. [In reply to] Can't Post

Which is one reason the 7.1 magnitude earthquake last September had no fatalities. But this earthquake was very shallow, and very close to the city. That, coupled with the weakening of buildings in that 7.1 quake, has made this one so severe in its damage.

The magnitude 6.3 quake, which hit at 10.51am (AEDT), has claimed at least one life, the fire service confirmed to Radio New Zealand, however police say "multiple fatalities" have been reported at several locations in the central city.
Some of those dead were believed to have been travelling in two buses which were crushed by falling buildings, TVNZ said.

I'm home! [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm home, tearful, but very thankful. My workplace is a mess with 30,000 books, computers and filing cabinets on the ground, but all staff uninjured.

I had to walk 6kms home because of the traffic jams - I'll go back with friends tonight to pick up car.

My house is ok!!! It's a mess with broken glass and everything on the floor but okay. Cat is missing (of course).

It's so much worse than the September quake - and worse too that it was at work because of the responsibility of staff. Crouching under a sturdy desk with a staff member on her first day (!) and calling out to everyone to see if they were all safe. Police made us leave very soon afterwards because of fatalities in the suburb.

Thanks for your thoughts. I'm shaking but okay.

Waiting now to hear that all is well with our other ChCh sibs.

Thank you [In reply to] Can't Post

I arrived home with my 'once smart' trousers caked in mud halfway up my calves because of the liquefaction on the streets and pavements.

When I arrived home my neighbours met me at the door and held my hand as I walked inside to see the damage.

Another young neighbour arrived with two bottles of water to help me get through the next few days - we have no water. While ChCh has been an awful place to live in, we've been lucky with our friends and neighbours.

And so glad to know that your house is okay (we know the cat will come back when she's able to!), and everyone from your workplace is okay. What a frightening time for everyone! It's good that you were right there with the new person. I hope your workplace building is okay!
