Greetings, Goomba [In reply to] Can't Post

Welcome to TORn. Here's a link to a nice little writeup about the blue wizards. Afraid they're among the loose ends that Tolkien never quite completely tied up.

To the Sea, to the Sea! The white gulls are crying,
The wind is blowing, and the white foam is flying.

Interesting! [In reply to] Can't Post

Interesting Q Goomba. I never knew more then they were blue & went east. Names even! Wynnie, do you know if the time matchs the time of the first Edain coming to Beleriand ? Could the blue wizards have been responsible for the Edain coming west ?

Much later. [In reply to] Can't Post

The Edain migrated to Beleriand in the First Age, the Blue Wizards arrived in Middle-earth either in the Second or Third Age, depending on which of Tolkien's ideas you choose.

Hi there! [In reply to] Can't Post

Blue Wizards, eh? As gramma said, there was once one on these boards (although he seemed to prefer posting in French), but that's probably not who you mean. Sly

Wynnie's link gives a good, concise explanation of them. I've wondered, though: why two Blue Wizards? They sent over a White, a Grey, and a Brown also; why not, say, a Blue and a Red? Or a Green and a Yellow? Or an Orange and a Purple?

Or maybe, "blue" just reflects their mood, at knowing they'd been assigned to the East...

"Only I hear the stones lament them: deep they delved us, fair they wrought us, high they builded us; but they are gone. They are gone. They sought the Havens long ago."
(Avatar pic: The Calanais stones, Isle of Lewis)

"It struck me last night that you might write a fearfully good romantic drama, with as much of the 'supernatural' as you cared to introduce. Have you ever thought of it?"
-Geoffrey B. Smith, letter to JRR Tolkien, 1915

We may not have [In reply to] Can't Post

a "Blue Wizard" any more, but we do have a Pallando. And an Indigo_Istari.
