US - Chicago [In reply to] Can't Post

I always have trouble answering "Where are you from" questions because I grew up in Ohio, and still consider it home, but for the last 20+ years I have lived in Chicago. But for anyone outside the US, I am "from" the US.

I live in Ohio, USA. If you find Philadelphia on the east coast, you will find Ohio next state to the west!

Wait a minute... [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm from Canada... you know, "America's hat". I'll assume you meant both North America and South America by simply, "America" and try not to flail indignantly... or at least not too hard.

We just tend to be very touchy about American generalizations up here. ;)

Well, not only from this survey but from what I've seen here during 2 years the majority of the members are americans and there are pretty few members from UK judging by the members posting and here

Take "Fiesta Friday" threads where almost everybody posting are American

It's unfortunate [In reply to] Can't Post

that a country and two continents share a name. Pretty confusing in a poll like this! And to add to the confusion, the people in Mexico call people from the US and Canada "norteamericanos', even though Mexico is in North America too.

good for you [In reply to] Can't Post

I get touchy about it too and I'm from the US. I think it's lazy and inconsiderate and probably egotistical (for those in the US that indulge) to want to use 'America' as the name for 'US'. I can see the difficulty with the adjective since you can't concoct anything useful to substitute for the word 'American' by starting with United States. And many times, we know what someone means. If a politician here talks about the 'American Spirit', we get it. They mean, The Spirit of the USA'

But when someone says, "How is American English different than British English", one has to ask: 'how are you using the word American?' because the answer is different depending on if they really mean US or they truly mean 'American' and all that encompasses. What's worse is, when you ask them for clarification, they get all huffy and say 'You know what I mean".

I tried to teach my kids from an early age that this:

is a US flag... not an American flag. No matter how much my mother-in-law tried to poo poo that distinction. :-)
