The part about Chris Lee and Ian Holm? I didn't know what to think about Frodo being in it but if the older version of Bilbo (Holm) is in it too then it makes everything seem alright. Now I can't wait to see where they're going with this new turn events. Damn PJ is awesome.

I know that he and PJ preferred Gandalf the Grey (in terms of character). I'd have to agree, but I also preferred Gandalf the Grey in terms of appearance (wasn't a big fan of the look of Gandalf the White). Gandalf the Grey, I think, gives McKellen more to work with as an actor - which in turn yields more interest. Gandalf the Grey has more human qualities than his White counterpart - especially when it comes to basic human weaknesses like memory loss, fatigue, and a quick temper. I can't wait to get a second go-around of this particular Gandalf. I just hope that we get a better beard. The beard in FoTR looked thin, scraggly, and (in my opinion) fake. I'd like to see a thicker one in The Hobbit.

All I had to decide was what to do with the time that is given me. I’m 71 and fit: though at my age who knows what accident is 'round the next corner? For a year or more, I have been arranging my professional commitments around the possibility of The Hobbit films starting at almost anytime. We brought the Waiting for Godot tour of Australia to New Zealand early 2010, assuming I would stay on to start shooting soon after. Then there was yet another delay: but in Wellington I met with Guillermo del Toro and later read his script for Part One, written with the LOTR writing team. It was true to the style, the fun and the romance of the trilogy. When Peter Jackson, already producing, resumed the director’s chair, he kept me in touch with developments. A second screenplay was sent over, on the understanding that I would not talk about what I read in it. After the ruckus over trade union expectations and unlikely rumours of filming outside New Zealand, suddenly crucial casting was announced, plus a start date in February 2011. Martin Freeman as Bilbo sounds perfect. As my agent continued to negotiate with Warner Brothers, I kept wondering was Gandalf what I most wanted to do, more than a new play for instance or indeed a new part? Sequels aren’t necessarily as rewarding to act in as their originals. Could I let Gandalf go? Would anyone else care if I did? Elsewhere, does anyone care that Michael Gambon was not the first to play Dumbledore? The deciding negotiation was not about money but about dates. Gandalf is needed on set over the next 18 months but with sizeable breaks when I can work on other projects. My worry that I could not easily escape from Middle Earth was lifted. I am happy to say I start filming in Wellington on February 21 2011. --Ian McKellen, London, January 2011

The wording of the text. A lot can be read between the lines--it's a much different kind of announcement than the playful, delighed "I'm waiting for my call from Middle-earth" of some months ago. 1)His choice of opening statement. Can't help but think there's more to that than his most famous LOTR line. Thinking of Frod and Ring perhaps? 2)His mention of the script. Part One written by "Del Tor and the LOTR Team" and his reaction to it specifically, whereas he merely says "a second screenplay was sent to me." by Jackson. Second screenplay of what? The screenplay for Part 2? A Jackson re-write of Part 1, + A Jackson-written part 2? A total Jackson re-write of the whole thing? He doesn't give his reaction to the final draft/script. Recall that WB swiftly approved Part 1, while Part 2 took MUCH longer, during which G left. 3)He talks about "the pitfalls (or wehatever term he uses) of sequels." I can't believehe ever had a notion of this. How can he compare this to HP? Well...*I* certainly think Richard Harris will always BE Dumbledore! Did he ever think anyone else could be Gandalf!?!? As for the rest--great news about Holm and OMG MY PRAYER--LEE!!!! Now I am biting my nails every DAY until I read, "Mr Lee has finished filming his scenes." At 90 anything can happen--a few weeks isn't that long a time, a few months. I HOPE TO GOD he has his stuff completed before April. PLease God...and let him live to see his completed work on the screen. You hear, Peter? No cutting this time around! This means the announcement of the Hobbit cast proper should be coming along VERY soon--please within the next 2 weeks! Most of the cast we still don't know! And if The Great Golblin or Necromancer in humanoid form is in there--well, is it still to ludicrous to hope a certain actor can play su`h a creature?:)

....and with Ian McKellen confirmed and hopes of hearing soon that Christopher Lee and Ian Holm are definitely cast the next one is Elrond. But I take hope from all these returning cast members and the fact that Peter Jackson said all along that he would bring back the original actors if he could. Elrond.... Hugo Weaving..... please!

Now I don't have to worry that I won't see the real Gandalf again during my lifetime before "checking out". Sir Ian Holm? Andy Serkis? CHRISTOPHER LEE? This better not be one of those dreams from Inception.
