I really hope this is just a rumour after all. I may be Swedish, but I can't stand Persbrandt. He's got such a bad attitude, and although he's a decent actor, he's quite overrated. If this proves to be true, I hope he has very few lines and/or isn't recognizeable at all. As for his agent not commenting on this; it's very good publicity even if it isn't true, and imo it makes sense not to flat out deny it. I agree that he's got a an attitude, he's the bad boy of all actors in Sweden, but that shouldn't be relevant for his acting or participation in this movie. And I can think of plenty more actors in sweden that are way more overrated. He's one of those actors who handle both theatre and movie excellent (like Ian) and he has an impressive CV from both. 1984 he was on the Dramaten stage the first time, 1992 first time for movie/TV-series. Even better, before acting he was a ballet dancer  Whatever role, I think he'll do it more than well.

If you went into casting Thranduil as an elf that needed the same intensity as Elrond (Hugo) you might come out with Mikael Persbrandt. He would bring some weight and authority to the elves in Mirkwood. Plus, he looks enough like Orlando to be his father.
Mikael Persbrandt has a bit more masculinity than say, Doug Jones.

A decent stage actor, sure, but I don't think he's a good movie/TV actor at all. I've seen him in various things since the soap "Rederiet" in the early 90s, and imo he has no real range. He's definitely no Ian. I also do think it matters what personality he is, this isn't just any movie project. Although unknown abroad, he's too arrogant and doesn't seem able to switch that off when needed.
As for other Swedish actors being more overrated than Persbrandt, that may be so, but there aren't many good ones to begin with, which is part of the problem. Just a few big fishies in a very small pond, hence the overrating.

Thranduil should match Legolas's speech, or Celeborn/Galadriel.
If he's going to keep a Swedish inflection then either Beorn or they'll go with such accents for the men of Dale or the Iron Hills Dwarves, I'd think.

While Persbrandt could be playing either Beorn or Bard, I'm leaning towards him as one of the Dwarves, either Balin or Dain of the Iron Hills.

I suggested him in an earlier post but no one picked up on it. I think perhaps not Balin if he's only filming a couple of weeks as Balin would be a much bigger part than that. But a dwarf seems quite possible to me. I can't imagine why anyone would describe an Elf as 'Nordic'.

Yes, I misread part of the previous post. Although, the Svartálfar, or dark elves of Norse mythology, resided in the underground world of Svartalfheim--much as Thranduil's Mirkwood kingdom is located underground.

Getting all worked up over a rumor isn't really worth the time, and the only opinion that matters at the moment belongs to PJ and team. If this is true, then he was cast for a specific reason, be it a certain physical type, an appealing acting style or they made a personal connection.

These reasons suggest a troll:
1. As http://en.m.wikipedia.org/...vian_folklore#Trolls shows, trolls are very Nordic.
2. Trolls are macho.
3. It does not matter so much if trolls have a non-English-speaking accent, as they are stupid and wild creatures. Indeed, it would be a natural decision for them to have a non-standard accent.

So the Norwegians suggests that he would be voicing a troll. Where did you read about this?
Must be either Tom, Bert & Bill they have in mind then.
I thought they would go CGI all the way with the trolls but the fact that Aftonbladet mentions that he has been trying out costumes already makes me a bit confused.
Although Aftonbladet is a bit of a tabloid and they have been known to be wrong lots of times.
But this time I think they maybe are on to something. Jens Peterson is known to be a serious film critic and journalist and I don't think he would risk his reputation by speculating or just guessing.
Time will tell. I just wish PJ could make more casting official soon. 
Edit: Jens made a follow up article on the news about Mikael later the same day.

A scandinavian actor playing a bjřrn (bear), it could be great :) He's a fairly good actor, with a deep voice. On the other hand he would be good for the role of thrand. It could be a welcome kind of change in the storytelling, a sweed, presenting a new kind of actor to the films and a new race of elves. I like the idea and imagery. When it comes to bard, I would rather like to see what Fassbender is capable of. One of my favorite actors.
