So, what does your Tolkien collection include?
|
Can't Post
|

I'm sure this has been talked about before but, I wasn't there so I would like to know. . Maybe for a bonus you could tell me in what order you got everything in. And maybe your favorite. Oh, oh, and what you want to get. Mine is a shared collection of my sister's and my group effort. Here it is in order: The paperback box set of the Hobbit and LOTR with Allan Lee's art on the cover. The EEs set. The soundtrack. With the movie covers. The ROTK game. The Tolkien guide. I forget the exact name but it's written by a some blank Tyler (Taylor?). Anyway. The Sil, the official movie guide, the TTT visual guide, and the art books for TTT and ROTK. Got these at the same time at a local used book store. They are in really nice condition. Some one else had got to the FOTR art book before me. But I was really happy to get the ones I did. I really want the complete recordings, the Doug Adams music book, and maybe in the distant future Nenya. The art book for FOTR too. At this point i'd take pretty much any thing that had to do with LOTR.
It's Latin. Loosely translated, it means... we cheat. "Strange treasures in this fair world appear, strange all, and new to me." That is a poem by Thomas Traherne and I have absolutely no idea what it's about. But, when I was small I was made to learn it by heart so I don't see why you shouldn't suffer too.

I have a one-volume LOTR with John Howe's Gandalf on the cover; a Collins Modern Classics Hobbit with illustrations by David Wyatt; Brian Sibley's 2001 and 2002 books about the making of the films; Gary Russell's Art of LOTR books (aside from the one-volume edition); David Colbert's guide to LOTR; a Ted Nasmith illustrated Silmarillion; a ROTK PS2 game; and The Battle for Middle-earth I and II on PC; the EEs of the films themselves; and the initial (incomplete) soundtracks.

I have a room full of Tolkien that I have been collecting for 30 years. It should be inventoried. My favorite piece of LotR movie ephemera is a box of Two Towers chocolate chip cookies with The One Ring surrounding the cookies on the front as well as Frodo & a couple other movie characters. Truly Evil Cookies! I love it.

Sadly, I'm off at college without the majority of my Tolkien collection with me at the moment. But as far as I can remember in the order I got them.... Paperback The History of The Lord of the Rings The Return of the Shadow The Treason of Isengard The War of the Ring The End of the Third Age Roverandom The Tolkien Reader Hardback The Children of Hurin Paperback The Smith of Wooton Major [Sir Gawain and the Green Knight Hardback The Hobbit with illustrations by Alan Lee The Lord of the Rings Alan Lee box set The Silmarillion with illustrations by Ted Nasmith Previously, I had only ever read my dad's hardback LOTR set from the 70s (which are still very nostalgic to read from) but I started my own collection when I bought The History of the Lord of the Rings books my Freshman year in high school. My parents finally got me my very own copies of LOTR, The Hobbit, and The Silmarillion as a coming of age present last year. :) Oh, and as far as the movies go, my family owns the LOTR EE for each film, so I suppose I've inherited the TR ROTK DVD that nobody really wants to watch anymore. And pardon my language but I kicked ass at the TTT and ROTK PS2 video games. ;D

I'm something of a redneck when it comes to my collecting budget, with a pretty sparse collection. So here it is: Books by Tolkien (paperback) LOTR in English LOTR in Spanish TH in English TH in Spanish I used to have unfinished tales in hardback but got rid of it before I moved out of state. Movies: FOTR TE on VHS ROTK TE on DVD All three EE on DVD (can't do without those!) Bakshi LOTR on VHS Rankin-Bass Hobbit on VHS Books about the movies: Fotonovel comic-book of the Bakshi LOTR (paperback) (hey anyone else have one of those? I got ahold of mine when someone cleaned out their garage and gave it to me) Other: The souvenir I got at the Trilogy Tuesday screening that was some little carved thingy with a film frame in the middle.

last night I found a copy of "Pictures of J.R.R. Tolkien" at the thrift store. I took it down off the shelf and realized immediately what it was. It had no price on it. This thrift store is not (IMO) over priced for common items but it does seem to recognize when it has a collectible. Now, I didn't know how much this book might be worth. I've seen them go for pretty hefty prices but this was a discarded library book, it's missing its dust cover and one can see evidence of where it was taped on. The bottom edge of the hardcover is battered a little... surely from being taken off and put back on the shelf. It's not an early edition. But it's in overall good shape, it's out of print, and I don't have it. So I took it to the front check out with the rest of my purchases to get a price on it. The clerk commented, "a book by Tolkien, hun?" and my heart sank a little. She knew what it was. The manager came over and thumbed through the book. It's an art book and art books are often priced quite a bit higher than standard fiction sorts of books. I waited..... "$1.69" "okay, thanks" ...and I waited till I got out side to hoot. :-) This book has been on my want list a long time. I love thrift stores.
