Hobbiton will stay as Hobbiton - forever!
|

The new Hobbiton movie set will become forever enshrined in the Matatmata landscape when the film crews leave, with permanent materials being used for a "bigger and better" version of the Middle Earth village than seen in The Lord of the Rings. Brett Hodge, owner of Matamata Post and Rails, which has supplied the timber for The Hobbit duology since construction began in February, told the Waikato Times that Sir Peter Jackson's company Three Foot Six was building the home of the Hobbits to last. "What they did last time was build a temporary set, but now it's a permanent set," said Mr Hodge, whose business also supplied the timber for the temporary The Lord of the Rings trilogy Hobbiton set. The hobbit houses will also have meet to building codes for permanent structures. "Once the filming is over the set will stay as a permanent tourist attraction." A permanent set is guaranteed to attract back many diehard The Lord of The Rings fans who have visited Hobbiton from overseas as well as win over new visitors. It will begin a perpetual celebration around the party tree, on the set, where The Fellowship of the Ring began with Bilbo's disappearance. The Green Dragon, where the dwarf Thorin Oakenshield awaits Bilbo Baggins ahead of their quest, will include a real thatched roof and the nearby Bywater bridge, made from polystyrene blocks resembling stone for The Lord of the Rings, is being rebuilt in permanent stone. http://www.stuff.co.nz/waikato-times/news/4289149/New-Hobbiton-set-there-to-stay

Just the other day I was wondering why that didn't happen earlier. They should do the same with all sets and market New Zealand as Middle Earth. Seriously, it would be like a huge Theme Park.
Please, give us back Glorfindel!!!

... they've probably factored in the cost of building permanent sets of brick and wood and stone as opposed to polystyrene. Amazing!

Will any of the other sets be made permanent too? I'd love to visit Thranduil's halls. Or the goblin caves. Or Beorn's house. Laketown. Smaug's lair. Dol Guldur...

and it would be in Middle Earth. The recently opened Wizarding world of Harry Potter is in Florida. It looks great but it's in friggin' Florida. I can't imagine it feeling right when it is 100 degrees and you can see palm trees in the distance. I think if there was a real Green Dragon to hang out in and have a drink I'd never leave. Here's hoping they make as much as possible real and permanent!

a check every year....ticket purchase price has a T.E. surcharge. To say this is the set where The Hobbit and LOTR was shot with strategically placed placards from the films at each location might escape infringement issues.

where a set will be build. Hobbiton was/will be build on private owned land without any environmental restrictions. Other sets (like Edoras) were build on DOC-sites. They are environmental protected lands and they have to be restored into their original habitat. And that is also good, because it would be a shame when all of the wonderful countryside would be turned into a theme park and we would lose the wonderful nature of NZ.

I think that it would be wonderful if the site could could be conserved in its completed form. I do not know much about the land use laws in New Zealand but I am sure that it would be advantageous to the farm family and the country's tourist industry to keep it complete. It would be a good place to build the museum to display the artifacts created for the trilogy as well as those that will be made for The Hobbit I &II. The building of a museum for artifacts from "the Lord of the Rings" and "Hobbit" Movies would not unfairly "make a choice" between England and New Zealand. The Movies were and are being made in New Zealand. The items to which I am referring are in New Zealand and rightfully should stay there. This has no bearing on the locations that inspired the books or their preservation. It is not one or the other. Everything deserves its rightful recognition and necessary preservation. I fear that much of this comes back to the control of the vast wealth that has been generated as a result of Professor Tolkien's writing. There is more than enough money to go around to save everything. I want to see these wonderful things preserved for posterity, whether they are places in England or New Zealand film sites or artifacts once owned by the professor or props made for the films. I would rather not see them auctioned off to the highest bidder or shuffled off into private collections or destroyed for whatever the reason. Greed is short sighted. It kills culture and if left unchecked, it will destroy Humanity. Professor Tolkien understood this very well. "Another consideration. The Tolkien Estate has a say in whether film material relating to LOTR gets used in contexts other than the film. They've been opposed to a museum to display the props and costumes and other material, and so far it doesn't look like that will ever happen either." To what extent can the Tolkien Estate assert control in such matters? PA: A web cam on the set would be nice. They could always turn it off during shooting.
