so it's fair game. I'm not sure why you're stressing. You're never, ever going to know if most of these things that you worry about are true or not. It almost begs the question if you find so much behind-the-scenes drama in everything that happens why do you even involve yourself? Why can't this just be a good thing? Does everything have to be so Machiavellian? I mean you go on and on about this and that being done to PJ or GDT - look both of these guys are both happy and rich. Neither one is really a victim worth getting worked up about. You seem like a really nice intelligent person but yes you DO stand out as the resident skeptic. This announcement comes out and everyone is hooray except you. So count me in as the resident stress therapy guy. I mean seriously no snark my suggestion is just enjoy the moment of something going right. I just don't like to see you stress out.

It's simple. Things finally worked out. PJ decided to direct, GDT decided he couldn't wait around. No big deal. It's just life. If they end up filming in NZ great. If not it will still be a great movie. Everybody relax and try to look at some good news and just enjoy it.

And so you get the feeling now that maybe just as they wanted the "blockbuster franchise guy" for the job, (as opposed to the other Oscar-winner director) adn were willing to (perhaps) manipulate the chips--and oh so patiently, for years--tighening the thumbscrews on Del Toro, perhaps, to pressure him into quitting---even willing to go to the lengths of pulling him off a *Stepehn Spielberg collaberation*--they knew full well the possibilty of a schedule conflict? I have to tell you, that sounds like one heck of a troll-sized gamble. Secondly, if they were so desperate to have PJ and only PJ direct, I'm sure that would have been part of the terms to begin with, rather than letting PJ and the rest of the studio come to an agreement with GDT. Ultimately the studio has say as to who the major players are in the film, and rather than try and sabotage the production, risking complete obliteration of the project, they could have just flat out said "this is how we want it done, and if it can't be done like that now, we'll just wait until it can." I'm just not buying the big conspiracy theory that the financial troubles they were going through were the perfect "excuse" for them to pressure GDT out. Am I sad for what GDT has gone through? You bet. I was excited for the guy, and excited to see his vision for the Hobbit. But I don't think there was any plotting against him in all this. He simply became frustrated with the wrangling that had to be done to get this thing to happen, and decided not to put up with the frustrations and scheduling problems. The movie business is full of ups and downs. Let's not try and paint GDT as an "unlucky" guy in the movie business - at least not more so than anyone else. He's done very well for himself, and I see a very bright future yet to come for him. He may be suffering through a couple of unfortunate circumstances right now, but I doubt highly that it has anything to do with him personally or professionally. Sometimes it's just the way the ball bounces.

I think the location of The Hobbit production has been decided
[In reply to]

I think the location of production has been decided upon already. In order for The Hobbit to be greenlit, there first needs to be a budget that breaks down the cost of the production. That budget then has to be approved before the greenlight is given. So now that we do have a greenlight, that means the budget has been signed off. The budget for making a film in NZ is going to be different from making a film in Scotland or Canada or Ireland etc. Different expenses, different tax incentives, etc. all mean different budgets. I think that makes it pretty clear that the Hobbit budget has to be in line with a particular location(s). It has already been decided on IMHO. The only question is...where?

It's great to hear some comments from Guillermo himself. I have two strong impressions of him: He's a gleeful geek, and a thorough gentleman.
Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..." Dwarves: "Pretty rings..." Men: "Pretty rings..." Sauron: "Mine's better." "Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded b*****d with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.
