Yeah... no. I don't buy that for a second. [In reply to] Can't Post

Studios cutting Peter Jackson down to size? He is never walked away from a fight. Do you remember the history of the LOTR?

And why would they be trying to screw the one guy trying to keep it all together? Filming in other locations has nothing to do with Peter Jackson. It's always been about the almighty dollar. They were suits before the movie and they will be after. Peter Jackson, according to several news syndications if you believe them, announced that they would have to look offshore if NZ couldn't provide better incentive for the film to be made there. The labor union issue is only part of the problem. The New Zealand Film Commission is a major part. You should read his 2010 investigation/report on NZ film making. Pretty insightful.

Remember that PJ was/is going to direct the Tintin sequel, which will be in 3D - so he's not altogether opposed to the idea.

I agree [In reply to] Can't Post

that this discussion doesn't really need to go further, so I will conclude as well. I was there, in that chat room that day. I remember very well. Like I said. I was ecstatic that GDT was taking the job, if Jackson wouldnt. And I am not denying his incredible personal investment in the films. But the bottom line is, he did leave, however justified the reasons. And PJ has gone above and beyond to stick with this project. His sacrifice far outweighs GDT's, and he has proven that he will stop at nothing to see these through, for the fans, for the mythology. Even if he'd rather not direct. I love GDT, always been a big fan. But PJ is the man for the job. Always has been.

Agreed. [In reply to] Can't Post

Official announcements are promotional not just informational in nature.

"Of all faces those of our familiares are the ones both most difficult to play fantastic tricks with, and most difficult really to see with fresh attention. They have become like the things which once attracted us by their glitter, or their colour, or their shape, and we laid hands on them, and then locked them in our hoard, acquired them, and acquiring ceased to look at them.
Creative fantasy, because it is mainly trying to do something else [make something new], may open your hoard and let all the locked things fly away like cage-birds. The gems all turn into flowers or flames, and you will be warned that all you had (or knew) was dangerous and potent, not really effectively chained, free and wild; no more yours than they were you."

I don't think we need to turn this into a conspiracy theory, [In reply to] Can't Post

dissin' GDT, or anything else.

It's simple. Things finally worked out. PJ decided to direct, GDT decided he couldn't wait around. No big deal. It's just life. If they end up filming in NZ great. If not it will still be a great movie. Everybody relax and try to look at some good news and just enjoy it.

And writers, directors, producers, editors... you get the idea... change their minds [In reply to] Can't Post

all of the time. Guillermo Del Toro originally said he was not going to be apart of The Hobbit and then he was... and then he wasn't. Peter Jackson said that he didn't want to direct and he wasn't and now he is. They (PJ and GDT) had said that 3D wasn't a consideration and now it is. Welcome to the world and yes - INDUSTRY - of film making.Smile

My heart is all a-patter... [In reply to] Can't Post

... thanks to my friend and sibbie Compa, I saw this first this this morning, and I'm shaking with excitement and anticipation. I'm listening to Bilbo's Song (from the ROTK Fan Credits Suite) to calm me down... what a journey this has been, and is going to be, oh my!

I'm glad to have loads of sibs to share this all with, or I might've just burst myself to bits from keeping all the exuberance brimming within Heart

Oh yes... [In reply to] Can't Post

I remember my own posts quite well on that occasion, Silverlode.I don't have to search.

I wasn'r going to comment further, but since a mod replied...well,. you deserve a reply, Silverlode, and I hope you'll forgive me.

Two, things.

1) My posts back then occurred before I discovered that this project did, in fact, IMO, have its Irvin Kershner. (Yes, Compa, if you're reading this, you can take your footer down now. He borrowed that phrase from me.) I sincerely hope that this project, down the road, does not turn out to be "TESB directed by George Lucas.

The 1983 Lucas......as opposed to Kershner. But still Lucas. It would have been great, but TESB< it would have been not. (Apply that concept in inverse, thematic-wise, and you'll get the situation here.)

and 2)That was then, this is now.. Peter (somehow, I can never again call him PJ; it seems too "familar") is a Mogul now, and I would not care aboiut that so much if it hadn't shown up in his work lately. The fears that Peter has of trying to top his own work are real, and I am not sanguine about the future. I welcomed the impossible dream come true of the acquistition of a director who both still had a somewhat "outside-the-box", somewhat "under-the-radar" mentality, someone who had not yet been scorched by years under the global spotlight, AND was artistically qualified for the job.

If the studios never wanted Del Toro, why couldn't they have just said no to Peter in the first place. If someone can tell me where the Divine justice is fior the past 2 yrs, then I'd love to know. (Sorry, but ATMOM Is not worth it for me, much as I look forward to it. )

I can only hope Fran and Philppa remain true equals when the script goes through its inevitable innumerable onset revisions...

And..well. there's a 3 I guess: you all speak of PR...well, PR and TORN....I can't helpbit relive your incident, Silverlode...when 3 or 4 yrs ago or whenever that was, NL were going to boot Peter off TH and Peter jumped the gun and went stright to us fans here on TORN with a press release saying he was walking away. Or whatever that was. You remember? He beat Shaye to it, and their plans were foiled by the fan outrage. IN a sense, our reaction pressured them to back off, and ultimaterly led to his staying on the project.

I don't think anyone in Hollywood forgot this. First, the gall of the lawsuit against NL, (people simply don't DO that) over "Hollywoodaccounting", and then the above incident,? What next?

I can't help but feel that just as Peter "jumped the gun" and went straight to us fans on TORN with an "offiicial release" (PR!, and boy did it work), WB and MGM--and maybe NL?--are turning the tables on him here, with his own methods--jumping the gun with an greenlight release before TH location is resolved, possibily shrewdly using our ecsastic reaction to put pressure on Peter to accept anyt demands they might make. Like as preordained location change.

Over the yrs I've coined a bit of a niche for myself as one of the resident skeptics here on TORN.Tongue But sometimes my theories do do come true, Neither Peter nor Guillermo wanted 3D, and now here we have #D. Don't say there was no tension there.

As for walking away...from directing...or what really goes on behind the scenes in NZ...everyone has to sign confidentuialty papers. So to suggest I am consoracy theoring is not not true--we'll never know.

I feel I am doing a public service breinging this up..preparing everyone for possible...next week.

I sincerely hope to God not.

And now, itr is 2 AM here....I really must leasve you all to the party and...good night.

I actually talked to Guillermo tonight [In reply to] Can't Post

He was at the Chicago International Film Festival to receive an award. We saw The Devil's Backbone, did a Q&A with Guillermo and Ron Perlman, and attended a cocktail reception after the film. During the reception, we all got to speak briefly with Guillermo. We briefly mentioned The Hobbit, and he assured us he is in a better place about the decision he had to make about The Hobbit, and he is convinced that things happen for a reason. He's a geek just like us, and looks forward to the design and concepts from the "new" director.

I think we can let go of any concerns we had about Guillermo being torn up about what is happening with The Hobbit - he is fine. He knows the ins and outs of Hollywood better than we do, and he fully understands that a press release is not a reflection of his contributions to the films.

Guillermo is a lovely man, and I was so glad to be able to spend a few moments with him.

Exactly [In reply to] Can't Post

In my now reasonably long career as a journalist I have found that press releases are never subtle. You can't do subtle in a press release. You do gushing, bigging up whatever announcement it is you've made. You don't mention any troubles you've had along the way and you can't give the whole history of the deal being announced. Journalists will always put the difficult details in their story anyway - that's their job. The studio's job is to give the good news in a positive way and it's done that well - with even a geeky in-joke, "there and back again" from an exec.

My guess is they'll announce location when the dispute is cleared up. At present, they can't, because it isn't.
