Poll: Have you made the leap to Windows 7?
Yes! A 64-bit OS! That's for me!
Yes!, but a 32-bit version is all I can run.
Why bother? XP is for me!
To hell with Bill Gates and Windows, Mac's are where it's at!
I still use Windows 98.
What's wrong with Windows ME?
What's an OS?

Have you made the leap to Windows 7? Can't Post

I just finally made the leap from 32-bit XP to 64-bit Windows 7 Professional and was curious.

I'm on Vista and may move to 7 once this machine is exorcised. How steep is the learning curve?

My new computer has 64-bit Windows 7 on it. [In reply to] Can't Post

But I didn't choose the system particularly because of that. I guess that's just what you get these days.

I'm having a few issues, but I don't think they're OS-related. Word has problems closing properly now and then, and I get a Visual Basic error message every time I open Excel.

And I'm having difficulties getting some older applications to function properly.

Overall, however, I'm kinda liking the way it works. It's super fast to load up, and I like how it uses the already existing icon on your taskbar when you open applications instead of adding another one. (A cluttery desktop is one of my pet peeves.)

There's a ton of stuff I haven't played with yet, too, such as widgets and etc.

Windows 7's learning curve [In reply to] Can't Post

is not steep and frankly it's the OS they should have put out instead of Vista - mainly because in my experience is a "road-tested" version and also because it has some of the features that was promised in Vista.

I'm using Vista [In reply to] Can't Post

which I don't see a poll option for...

frankly I don't see what the problem is with Vista. I've had it for a year now and I haven't noticed anything wrong. At least nothing I would attribute to the OS.

Mac at home, Windows at work [In reply to] Can't Post

My home computer is a Mac Mini running OS 10.4; at work it's all Windows XP, but we expect to be upgrading to Windows 7 in a year or so.

I believe it's just like Vista but...better? [In reply to] Can't Post

I haven't had much time using either, but I remember I really hated Vista the first time I used it. Windows 7 seems to have all the stuff XP had, but it's obscured, almost like they were trying to hide stuff or rather they presented it in a way that seems to me to be less user friendly then XP. The volume controls in Windows 7 are an example of that. It used to be a straight forward panel of sliders in XP... in WIN7 it's way to over complicated, searching through several little pages to mute the mic. from playback over your speakers takes a bit of searching. As long as it's stable, I'm happy, and Win 7 Professional has a virtual XP mode, (this is misleading -you have to download it from microsoft, why they didn't include it on the disk is beyond me...also your processor has to support it) so you can run programs that are incompatible with Win7, I installed it, but have yet to run a program with it because you have to spend hours updating it just like a regular PC. I believe I'm going to have to run Photoshop CS 1 like this from what I understand. Anyway, it's stable so far, and I started to disable some of the useless features.

I meant to put that on there, but at the time I had remembered that I was about to miss my trash day pick-up and by the time I came back, the dreaded 10 minute edit time had already elapsed.

My laptop is still on XP Pro, and I also have some software that may not be backward-compatible. I use Firefox and OpenOffice.org instead of IE and MS Office.

Vista and Windows 7 [In reply to] Can't Post

Windows 7, like I've said before and others here have - is what was promised in Vista (for the most part). That said - Vista is not a total waste of time. I've been using Vista now for years (not by choice) and it's stable and does what it needs to do - if not in a particularly grand fashion. It is quantum light years above Windows 95 or 98. But then again so was XP. That's what the crux was when Vista came out - was it really worth the upgrade from XP? Then - no it wasn't. XP is also super stable. It handled the technology of the time just fine.

Now, if you had only those two choices - yes it would. That's simply because technology has changed and XP doesn't keep up. Actually about 3 years ago I had nothing but headaches with XP and the new PC hardware I was using to build my brother a computer. XP still retained some of that "hobbyist" feel to it that made it a bit less polished. Vista is a bit more friendly to the novice and less specialist-centric. Windows 7 continues that trend.

Yes, 32 bit, and it's wonderful [In reply to] Can't Post

Microsoft put out a promotion for students... it cost me USD$40 to upgrade my Vista to W7, and I have enjoyed it quite a bit. It can throw you off at first, but it's incredibly stable, fast and easy to use.

Have dual-boot Mac with Snow Leopard and W7/32-bit. [In reply to] Can't Post

Most of the time I'm using it as a Mac, but I have several programs (Quicken and Quickbooks) that have to run on Windows. I really like Windows 7. It's faster and easier to use than XP, which was pretty good, and way, way better than Vista, which was a pig.

But the Mac OS is superior to any Windows!

I'm going to make the leap sometime soon [In reply to] Can't Post

I currently have Vista on my laptop - I think it's ok... I mean, I'm not exactly a pro when it comes to technology and computer systems etc. so I don't know why a lot of people have been complaining about it (I'm not referring to you guys). But anyway I'm going to be upgrading to Windows 7 sometime within the next 5 months or so I should think

I'm still on Vista, but my family's new computer (which I was on a couple times) has W7 and it was nice. I've considered getting W7, but as Vista hasn't really been bothering me I haven't thought too much about my options.

I was forced to! [In reply to] Can't Post

My work computer was infested with malware to the point where the IT folks had to completely reinstall the operating system. (Fortunately I didn't lose much data because I'd recently done a backup!) They upgraded it to Windows 7 and I have to say that the machine's performance is quite a bit better than it was with XP, the previous OS. Some of Windows 7's "helpful" things drive me nuts, though, like the automatically resizing windows and the reorganized Microsoft Word menus.

Mac and never going back! [In reply to] Can't Post

I switched to MAC last month for better video/photo editing and loving it so far. Sort of like exploring a new planet for the first time (imagining of course) when stepping in to the world of Mac for the first time. At first, I was very intimidated by the little icons jumping up and down to peek at me at the bottom of the screen, but now that I have familiarized myself with the new environment, I don't think I will ever go through those "Windows" again.
