if the power's off - but the reports seem to indicate significant damage but mostly to buildings - the NZ Herald report says there have been no reports of serious injuries, which is a blessing.
Got to say that the quote in the Herald story from Chch mayor Bob Parker is classic Kiwi understatement: "Mr Parker told Newstalk ZB that the morning had been "pretty traumatic.""

I lived about 20 miles away from that. It was billed as a 6.7, but the surface ground movement was extensive. Damage occurred up to 85 miles (125 km) away, with the most damage in the west San Fernando Valley, and the cities of Santa Monica, Simi Valley and Santa Clarita. More than 30 people were killed in the tremor; a total of 61 deaths were attributed to direct and indirect causes. More than 8,700 were injured including 1,600 that required hospitalization.
Like this one, Northridge occurred at about 4:30 in the morning. Everyone within many miles was jolted out of bed. My house suffered only minor damage (broken glassware), but at my office bookcases and equipment racks were all on the floor, and it was a big mess. Power was out for most of the day where I lived, and several days in some places. And this was California, where earthquake preparedness is high in everyone's consciousness.
So, I suspect that's what the folks in Christchurch are going through. My thoughts and prayers are with them all!

We live about 10 miles north of Christchurch. We were awoken from deep sleep this morning by what I can only describe as violent jolting. It's kind of a blur, but we each grabbed a boy (ages almost-3 and 4 1/2) and flew outside while the house was rolling and jolting around us. I heard glass breaking as we ran down the hall, but of course I didn't stop to check! We made it outside safely before it was over, and looking towards Christchurch we could see several massive bursts of light exploding against the dark sky -- maybe power transformers blowing, or something else? Those didn't last long, and then all was DARK. We stayed outside shivering for a while, then came back in and sat right by the front door in case we needed to get out again. We've had lots of aftershocks, a few big enough to send jittery us back outside again, but lots of small ones. We only lost a few breakables in the house and one lamp -- I'm actually amazed we didn't lose a lot more, given other reports of damage we've heard. Besides the broken glassware, the biggest other mess in the house was where my large mealworm colony ended up upside-down on the carpet and bookcase. What a mess!
NZS went out to the petrol station for bread and water, and a guy there said that what had been a bedroom over their garage is now a bedroom IN the garage. The main street through our little town is closed, and at least one street that NZS saw was ripped and torn all up and appeared to have a burst water main too. I expect if one street is like that, there are probably more! We've also heard that some animals from our wildlife park have escaped, but no further info on that (including whether it's things like the kangaroos, or things more like the tigers and lions!). Local news suggests that the damage in Christchurch is fairly extensive, in keeping with news reports available online.
Our power came back on just a bit ago, but the water's still off, and I won't be surprised if it's off for some days. I can only imagine that burst water mains and sewer lines take some time to fix, especially when there are a lot of them across the region.

One's been found drowned and the other's still missing, but all of the human-dangerous animals are safe in their enclosures.
I'm so glad to hear you're OK! What a hell of a thing to experience - I've never experienced an earthquake that big and I'd be quite happy to keep it that way.

I only heard about the quake a little while ago, since I've been out all day at work and running errands. Naturally, my first thought was for my Kiwi e-friends; but by the time I read about it online, reports indicated that no one had been killed and only a couple of people had been seriously injured. Here's wishing those two a quick and full recovery - and wishing everyone else a quick return to normal water and power service!
Oh, and here's something that might be good for a laugh: I couldn't remember where in NZ each of my TORNsibs hailed from, or even which island Christchurch was on; so not only did I feel like your stereotypical clueless American, but I was also worried about several people who were nowhere near the quake!
Yeah, yeah, Draupne: You can go ahead and drag out that caution tape now. This time I deserve it!

The earthquake was frightening. I remember most the noise of things breaking and being rocked around so you had to hold on to the wall for support.
The damage to my home and workplace is minimal - broken things but nothing expensive. More messy - jars of jam and marmalade falling out of cupboards and breaking on the floor and getting mixed up with everything else.
At work I have 32,000 books but when we shifted last year I had all shelving fixed to walls so again the damage was minimal.
The aftershocks are still going on and are nerve-wracking. My cat is still missing 8 hours after the main earthquake and that's what I'm most upset about.

I've wandered the streets looking for Sammy (the cat) but the noise of glass breaking and the shaking really scared him - it did me too! I was extremely fortunate at work because the surrounding blocks have been cordoned off with three buildings partially collapsing. I don't know how much I will sleep tonight! The ongoing tremors keep us on our toes!

on your part, having the shelving secured! It's a relief that most of your damage was confined to messiness.
And your cat will return once the aftershocks die down.  Animals have incredible instincts concerning earthquakes; most likely, she's staying in the safest spot she knows, until she can "feel" that it's safe to come out again! Let us know when she's back!

The water is my biggest concern, for you - I hope you're able to get enough to tide you over as things get fixed. And hopefully those in charge will have the wisdom to deal with the damage in the most expedient way!
