LOTRO quest halp! Can't Post

I'm stuck on &^%$#*! Vol. II, Book 8, Chapter 1, "Escape from Rushdurinul."

The one where you have to escort Bróin and Mazog out of the cavern. I have tried it half a dozen times on my lvl 65 mini, and I FAIL.

Every.Stinking.Time

Mad

What is the trick to completing this dang quest, especially on one of the more squishy classes? I'm five levels above it, fer cryin' loud! I can't get any bigger or stronger than I am, and it wouldn't make any difference if I did, because I'm not the one having trouble surviving. It's Bróin, the !#$%^& NPC who keeps buying the farm on me.

It wouldn't be such a big deal to have to repeat it until I succeed, but the quest takes a freaking HOUR to do, and thought of having to spend another fruitless HOUR just to fail again makes me a little sick to my stomach.

I gotta say... [In reply to] Can't Post

this made me laugh! Sorry!!!!! But I can relate to the frustration..... alas I will be no help to you on this one. I'm not there, level-wise so I've yet to do that quest.....any chance you can find someone to help? Someone to stick right on that NPC to protect? You need a Guardian with you to keep the mobs away from the NPC! Sorry I'm of no help! I wish I could!

What's the matter, James? No glib remark? No pithy comeback?"

So sorry! [In reply to] Can't Post

(I'm assuming this is the quest that picks up the story from the broken-down Throne Room of Durin, and you're escorting a shackled Mazog out of there. If not, completely ignore this post.)

Sometimes being squishy really sucks, I know. It's been a while since I ran that one on my mini, but here are a couple ideas off the top of my head:

1 - Drop War Speech, and keep your threat reduction skills running as often as possible. Throw heals up on Broin constantly, and auto-attack whichever target Broin is currently attacking. SoS on him should help, and throw up Ballad of War and Anthem of the Freeps when you can. Don't forget to fear a target every 30 seconds, too.

2 - Get your glowy hands warmed up, rock out with WS and grab as much aggro as you can. Since Broin is the one dying here, I'm guessing he's getting hit too hard for his own good. SoS is still good to keep up on him, and always fear a baddie when you can.

In both cases, make sure you're using the banners appropriately. If you're in WS, having the boost to offence should let you grab aggro pretty easily, and if you're focused on healing Broin, a boost to defense or power regen should be helpful.

Again, if this isn't the quest I'm thinking of, my bad! And if you've tried all of the above already and still have trouble, let me know and I'll run it again on the mini and give more specific tactics. Good luck!

Unfortunately... [In reply to] Can't Post

...in addition to being freaking hard, it's also solo only. You have to do it alone. Unimpressed

If I ever finish the darn thing, I'm sure I'll chuckle over it, too, but right now I'm just frustrated. Gah!

That's exactly the one I'm having trouble with!!!! [In reply to] Can't Post

Although I hop, skip and jump around the epic quests, so I haven't actually gotten to Durin's throne room yet, LOL! (Or maybe I have, and it has just been so long ago that I've forgotten it...I dunno!)

I have tried various things, but not necessarily in the combinations you suggest.

And I keep forgetting about my fear skill. Blush

The last time I tried the quest, I actually got all the way through to the last part where I just had to defeat Mazog. That's probably when I should have turned WS back on.

I'll have to try it again without waiting so long next time, so I don't forget all this advice.

The Answer [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi there guys. I'm New to this site, but have been playing LOTRO for over 3 years.

I know the frustration of that quest, and how you successfully complete it is going to bug you to no end!

All you have to do is fight your way through the first couple of waves of scrubs and then run for the door once the bosses show up. That't it. You can't possibly defeat them by yourself, so I suppose that's a lesson there.

I have a friend who died maybe 3-4 times before I told him how I did it. I figured it out just through a silly act of desperation on my second try, so I'm no genius...

LotR and Me [In reply to] Can't Post

I've visited this site quite a few times, but just to read. I think I made a post under another account a few years back after the start of LOTRO, but forgot my password.

Anyway, I've been an LotR fan since I was little (late 1960s), when my father read us The Hobbit. I've read the whole LotR trilogy many times since then, and of course saw the movies in the theater when they first were released, and own both versions of each (theatrical and extended).

Given my enjoyment with the LOTRO game, I have to say I'm surprised that more fans on this site aren't avid fans of it as well. It's as close as you'll probably ever come to actually being there. Yeah, there're idiosyncracies, but that goes for any material that isn't the books themselves!

I hope more people who are Tolkien fans try it out now that it won't cost them a dime to do so.

FYI, I did every quest, and worked on skills, reputation, and other aspects of the game with my first character for a full year before I reached level 50, so you if you take your time, you shouldn't have to pay a dime for quite some time. Saying that, I do believe that they've made it easier/quicker to level up, and it won't take you a year, or even close to that.

You speak truth - it's been said here before... [In reply to] Can't Post

...that many would enjoy playing this game. I agree, which is why I'm excited to help out TORn folk come September 10th!

I'm always appreciative of LOTRO players who were book-firsters, or even movie-firsters for that matter. I think that even though the representation here would be minimal, "game-firsters" would be an appropriate addition to the lists!

I thought there would [In reply to] Can't Post

be more folks involved from here. There are fewer than I would have thought. It seems the money is a large factor, which completely explainable. Time seems to be the other major factor. Its such an addictive game, its easy to get lost in it for hours, as you know! Anyway, the F2P event might see more. I'd still like to start a TOR.n Kinship on as many servers as we can, just to help out folks from this site. I thought it might be a good way to drive new folks here as well. Who knows....might happen one of these days!

The idea of starting a ToRN kinship sounds pretty good to me! I play on Silverlode currently, but have toons on other servers as well. Been playing since Dec. of 06. With the F2P coming up next month, might be a good time to launch this idea! :-)

Well officially.... [In reply to] Can't Post

I don't believe we can use the TOR.n name without permission from the POTB. As it is a copyrighted name and all. But I wonder if the POTB would mind if we started up a few kinships under other names and used them as TOR.n windows into this game. As the membership grows from this site, it would be nice though to have an 'official TOR.n' presence in LOTRO.....

Are you sure about that? [In reply to] Can't Post

I mean, I don't just have to stay alive myself. I have to keep Broin alive, too.

And if I run for the door and he stays behind to fight, I'll still fail.

Right?

I did almost make it through the final boss fight twice. The first time, I died. The second time Broin died.

You should ask! [In reply to] Can't Post

Especially since it wouldn't be asking them for money or anything -- just permission to use the name as a hook.

I'd be willing to start up a couple new characters on whatever server, if someone wanted to start a kin.

And even if we couldn't use the TOR.n name "officially," I'm sure TPTB wouldn't mind us dropping the name here and there to entice people to visit.

I called them the POTB...'Powers of the Board'! What the heck was I thinking! Anyway....
I did inquire quite sometime ago about it....but didn't officially hear back from the TPTB. I'm assuming that is because at that time we didn't have enough players on one server to really start one up. But I guess its worth running it up the flagpole again.

There was a TORn kinship once upon a time (sry for drifting OT) [In reply to] Can't Post

but not sure whatever happened to it. You pointed that out Donry, a few months ago. I think everybody more or less agrees that a kinship would be fun, if only we had the numbers to keep it fun, as you say. I'd be more than willing to start up a kinship for the people here, BUT a few things need to happen first:
  • Several of us need to have characters on the same server. If we can direct the FtP folk to the same place, it'd be a perfect time to start. I too would be willing to start new toons on a new server to help out as we level. It's surely open to suggestions, but I recommend Landroval simply because of the number of players there who appreciate Tolkien as much as we do. (I hate to "abandon" my toons on Nimrodel and El, but will gladly make the distinction between my raiding servers and my TORn-friendly, basking-in-Middle-earth server!) How does Landroval sound?
  • If the 1st point sounds good, let's communicate to the new folk that Landroval is the place to start, especially since they may not know the difference when first choosing a server. Once they're on the server, we can invite away!
  • We'll need to pick a name! The old kinship was named "TheOneRing". Depending on how "official" we get, the kinship name could range from "The One Ring dot net" all the way to "Flight of the Balrog". This would be something to vote on, for sure!
  • Spread the word! If someone is remotely interested in giving LOTRO a shot, it'd be very comforting to know there will be familiar names there to help them along. Having someone in-game by your side is much more effective and enjoyable than reading the manual.
What say you? Wink

Alt names [In reply to] Can't Post

We could use "The Sibs" as a name as an homage to the board reference. I have 2 toons on Landy right now, just as place holders, but I'd be willing to level them if we started playing regularly. My only commitments now are to Thursday night raids and Friday afternoon book quests with a friend. This could be cool! :)

The old Kinship... [In reply to] Can't Post

petered out without enough interest I believe.

Legalize_Athelas......
Here's my opinion on your points...
  • I agree with you on having a fairly secure Kinship on at least one server to start, and direct new folks there. And Landroval obviously works for me, as all my toons are there. But I would hate to see established characters being abandoned....is there a way around this? Other than that I see Landroval as a pretty good place to start, but have next to no knowledge of the others, only that I hear some are really dropping in population for some reason.
  • The name is going to be interesting. I'd love to be as official as we can get, but on the other hand Landroval is the 'unofficial' roleplaying server. I guess we could be an 'unofficial' Kinship geared towards helping TOR.nsibs? Outside of the official name, I have no specific name in mind and would definitely look forward to a vote
So I think we have the groundwork in order here already. I think we should go through with it. We should pick a server, unless we have enough to spread it out to two servers? Two smaller kinships or one larger one?
And let's think about some names......Can't wait to get this up and running!

Other servers [In reply to] Can't Post

Maybe "abandon" was too strong a word. Characters established on other servers won't go anywhere, and they'll be waiting for us when we log back on to raid and whatnot. There is an option to purchase, with cash, a server transfer for your high-level characters, but I don't think that's necessary (or even allowed... was Landroval one that wasn't accepting transfers?). The only thing we'd be missing out on would be to have our high-level toons shower gold and silver upon all of us newbies, but who really needs that, right? Tongue For the purposes of helping TOR.nsibs get on their feet, a new world is A-OK.

Let's stick with one server for now, lest our eyes get to big for our stomachs and we burst brass buttons all over the place. Oh, and "an 'unofficial' Kinship geared towards helping TOR.nsibs" sounds like a perfect motto to me.
