what? You'll release the dogs? Or the bees? Or the dogs with bees in their mouths so when they bark they shoot bees at you? - Homer Simpson

That's either hilarious, or very scary. I'm sure his presence of mind made all the difference!

I have mixed feelings about the whole subject of "personal guns owned for safety." I think the subject is more complicated than it seems--and the "right" answer (I believe) varies depending on who you are *and* where you live.

Killing is indeed killing, however you slice it. If you read my post I use my head first and IF I have no other choice then my would-be assailant is more than UN-happy to provide me with a weapon if I need one. But you completely misconstrue my saying one way of killing is more preferential to another. I like swords much better because I carry an old-time warrior's ethos that if you are going to kill something you should have to look it in the eyes as it dies because only that teaches what a profound thing taking a life is. I understand hunting with bow and arrow, and typically with traditional ones you did have to look them in the eye until the longbow became popular in the later Middle Ages. By the way, the saying was not solely the Corps, the Army uses it extensively as well (and I began my career as Army to answer the next question). I don't own a firearm because I do not need one. You're correct that many military do own them, however that's more because of familiarity than anything else. It's also true that most military tend to be Republican and fundamentalist Christian and I'm neither of those either. Stereotypes can get one into trouble. Always best to ask rather than to assume - and I take it you know the one about "assume"?

I believe in German shepherds. Because: 1. They work when you aren't at home. 2. . . . or asleep, or unconscious . . . 3. No one can grab one from you and use it against you. 4. Perfectly safe for your kids to handle. 5. Come with built-in alarm system. 6. Never unloaded. 7. Enjoyable to handle. 8. Multiple uses, most of them fun or helpful. 9. Surprisingly funny or goofy at times, so high amusement value. 10. Highly unlikely someone will break into your house just to steal them.

a friend had one, but because she had kids she kept it locked in a gun safe and the bullets somewhere else . . . she figured if someone broke into her house, her best bet would be to throw the safe at them because there wouldn't be time to get the gun out and loaded. So she got rid of it and has two German shepherds (see my other post).

In my country firearms are illegal, pepperspray is illegal, and I don't have a sword. And it makes me feel perfectly safe because other people won't have one either.
