"Tolkien at Kalamazoo" is a group that sponsors sessions at the International Congress on Medieval Studies at Western Michigan University every year. Among the thousands of people who attend the Congress are the Tolkien people (not all of whom are medievalists!). Here is the schedule of Tolkien events for this year, most of them sponsored by "Tolkien at Kalamazoo" but some others as well. N.E. Brigand is one Tornsib who is on the program, and some of you might recognize Chris Vaccaro, whose students visit the Reading Room once a year. I'll be attending -- anyone else from TORn? Information about the whole conference is available on the Congress website. May 13 --Thursday 10:00 Session 27 NEH Summer Institute “J. R. R. Pretty good company for a panel on The Hobbit! But N.E.B. definitely can hold his own.

Way too much to report on here, but I can tell you a bit about N.E. Brigand's presentation -- packed with ideas and thoughts about the upcoming Hobbit movies. He talked about different approaches to movie versions of books like LotR, contrasting the views of some critics who don't think that any films or fanfic or other adaptations should be composed of LotR and critics who acknowledge that films are going to be made and that they're necessarily different from the books. N.E.B. mentioned DelToro's posts on TORn which have said that he's going to end the first movie in the middle of the book, told us exactly where the middle of the book is, and questioned where others think it might be. He also mentioned a few TORN regulars and their theories on the upcoming movie. He highlighted some of the problems of a film adaptation of The Hobbit, such as how to film Bilbo's invisibility or the talking animals. These are the points I remember right now without my notes. I don't know whether he found it a bit disconcerting to be mentioning Tom Shippey's articles with Tom Shippey sitting right there in the front row before him, but that's what happened. The Friday night session, "Tolkien Unbound," is the one that is meant for fun and entertainment. We started off with Eileen Marie Moore singing and playing "The Road Goes Ever On" song cycle by Donald Swann, which was great to hear live, as one piece. Then we had selected readings from Sigurd and Gudrun, followed by the just-for-fun "Lord of the Ringos," led by Mike Foster -- these were LotR-themed songs based on Beatles tunes, and N.E.Brigand once again demonstrated that he has a good voice by performing as one of the singers in the band.

are "famous" for adapting Beatles songs to Tolkien. I think Mike did most of the writing, and Ted plays along. I've seen them a few times and they are great. I really want to get to Kalamazoo one year. Each year I'm prevented by real life. K'zoo is only about 2.5 hours away, so it's an easy trip.

Since it obviously means Twin Cities! I presume your TC is Traverse City which is a lovely town. We sometimes stayed there overnight to catch the Frankfort car ferry across Lake Michigan. I can remember staying in a motel right across the street from the Lake. I so dearly love the Great Lakes. It would about the only thing that would drive me back to Michigan. My favorite spot in all of Michigan is the Sleeping Bear Dunes picnic area, though.

on Lake Michigan in Onekama/Portage Point tommorrow. I often wonder how they can be pried from their home it is so beautiful! I find myself sitting on their deck listening to the waves watching hummingbirds for hours! There are a lot of hardwoods left amongst all the pines and we are sometimes surprised by morels Memorial Day and even as late as July 4th! It does make other elements of Northern Michigan living more bearable (low employment being only one joy Michigan wrestles with these days).

I figured the Michigan folk would get it. Here in Chicago, the "Sox" mean the White Sox, but in Boston it's the Red Sox. One time I worked with two people who were fans of each team, and the fan of the team with the better record got to refer to his team as the "Sox". The other fan had to use the full name. Just an illustration of how perspective changes everything. Traverse City is lovely, as is Frankfort and the Sleeping Bear Dunes area.
