Always wondered too [In reply to] Can't Post

I read some things that he really didn't care for them and thought that his father's work wouldn't translate well to media. But I really don't know what he thought about them. If someone could better elaborate?

Quote
The son of author JRR Tolkien has denied reports that he is unhappy with the way the Lord of the Rings films have been made.
Christopher Tolkien is one of famous author's three surviving children and owns the rights to his father's literary legacy.
He had remained silent about the films, but reports claimed he was unhappy with the way the film-makers interpreted his father's books.
It was also reported that the Tolkien family had fallen out over the issue.
In a statement through his solicitors, Tolkien said he thought it would be impossible to translate his father's novels onto the big screen.
"My own position is that The Lord Of The Rings is peculiarly unsuitable to transformation into visual dramatic form," he said.
"The suggestions that have been made that I 'disapprove' of the films, vent to the extent of thinking ill of those with whom I may differ, are wholly without foundation."
He added that he had never "expressed any such feeling".

Honestly, I don't even know if he ever confirmed having seen any of the movies.

The whole Tolkien family really doesn't care about the films and didn't care to see them. I have this from an extremely dependable source, although it has been a few years since we talked about it.

You should read up on Christopher Tolkien. [In reply to] Can't Post

All that I have ever heard would indicate that this is probably true. Ted Nasmith told me that he was a real nice guy. Guess he personally approved the art for the illustrated Silmarillion.

A very nice and generous & humble person, Mr. Nasmith. [In reply to] Can't Post

He did a presentation at a local book store when the Sil was just released. There were about 15 of us there and rather than just a signing he gave a slide show and then chatted with us. It was neat. I bought that copy of the Silmarillion that night. He signed it. Now if I could get ahold of Christopher T. ...

Um. I usually love Mr. Nasmith's drawings.. [In reply to] Can't Post

but, as a person with pretty bad claustrophobia, the lack of windows at his drawing of BagEnd is making me not particularly love this piece. I do picture it more like Howe's version. No windows reminds me more of a mole tunnel, even with the front door open.

I hadn't even noticed the small number of windows! Crazy

I dunno, there's just something about how the light hits the green that gets me. I can't get enough of it, and I wouldn't mind a huge framed print of it in my livingroom.

That, or his Gondolin piece.

I think those ARE windows ( I had thought at first they were other doors to other homes.) Yes, the light is beautiful.

True dat! I love John E Kaufmann's interpretation of it: http://jek2004.com/Gondolin.jpg

But I will always prefer Nasmith's: http://www.theonering.com/...ibrary/96tcal_06.jpg

Probably because it reminds of Minas Tirith. For reasons unknown even to me, I am highly partial to Minas Tirith & Minas Ithil. And Minas Morgul too for that matter.

Pure speculation on my part, but... [In reply to] Can't Post

it doesn't seem strange to me. Think about it - Christopher grew up hearing his father's tales and when he was away fighting in the war his father sent him chapters of LOTR as he wrote them. It must have been a unique part of his childhood and maybe an even more precious and essential escape in wartime. He has probably the most personal connection with these stories of anyone in the world, and he's spent his life as his father's literary executor.

When we read the books, especially those of us who read them prior to seeing the movies, we each develop a vivid personal imagination of them. I don't have any trouble understanding that he might not want his, which is quite literally his inheritance from his father, disturbed by someone else's interpretation, let alone their changes and additions. In his place, I don't know that I would either.

Seems to me that expecting Christopher Tolkien to watch the movies is a bit like making verses about Earendil in the house of Elrond.

"Of all faces those of our familiares are the ones both most difficult to play fantastic tricks with, and most difficult really to see with fresh attention. They have become like the things which once attracted us by their glitter, or their colour, or their shape, and we laid hands on them, and then locked them in our hoard, acquired them, and acquiring ceased to look at them.
Creative fantasy, because it is mainly trying to do something else [make something new], may open your hoard and let all the locked things fly away like cage-birds. The gems all turn into flowers or flames, and you will be warned that all you had (or knew) was dangerous and potent, not really effectively chained, free and wild; no more yours than they were you."
