My dad is now stuck in Europe because of it [In reply to] Can't Post

He went over there for a business meeting in Norway, and was going to see my grandmother in Scotland, and now I think he's stuck in Wales, and he never went to either place! At this point, I'm not sure what his plans will be once the flights start up again.

Yeah, I see [In reply to] Can't Post

it affected both of my parents - my father was going to ski in the French Alps with a couple of old friends... and now this came up. So guess what? He now has to the BUS down to France (2000 km~) which will take 2-3 whole days. My mother was going to fly with her work to northern Sweden, but because of the volcano, she had to take the bus (15 h)

It's reported that if this is continued a bit more, a lot of the European Airlines will go bankcrupt.

Quite a mess.

I've got relatives stuck also [In reply to] Can't Post

Hubby's sister and her husband are in Iceland, trying to get to their daughter/my niece in England...they're keeping us appraised of their flight situation.

Had a chat this morning with my dad, who worked on an aircraft carrier in WWII, and he talked about how much damage soot particles can do to plane engines!

I'm impressed that you spelled it! [In reply to] Can't Post

I was just now trying to learn to pronounce it. Apparently, there are invisible consonants in Icelandic!

Where's Frodo?

I can pronounce it. [In reply to] Can't Post

It's easy for me - "ö" exists in the Swedish alphabet as well.

Ö is pronounced as "earn".

This picture looks like the destruction of Mordor [In reply to] Can't Post

From here: http://www.boston.com/...yjafjallajokull.html

For instance, on the planet Earth, man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much -- the wheel, New York, wars, and so on -- while all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man, for precisely the same reasons. -- Douglas Adams

To my shame [In reply to] Can't Post

no, I didn't - I was daydreaming about my own visit to Vatnajökull and how majestic that looked, and then trying to remember where exactly the Eyjafjallajökull is.

I guess I don't make the connection so easily because I know how much ice is about the Icelandic volcano - quite the difference to Mordor.
