Ian McKellan expects filming to begin in June!

But British actor Sir Ian McKellen – best known for his role as Gandalf in the Rings sword and sorcery epic – said on his website that he would reprise the role of the grey-haired wizard and expected shooting to begin this June. Let's hope he's right about this!
Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..." Dwarves: "Pretty rings..." Men: "Pretty rings..." Sauron: "Mine's better." "Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded b*****d with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak. I can't see anything on his website that says when that page was last updated. I'd be happier if I knew this was a recent mention of date rather than something left from an earlier schedule.
Silverlode "Of all faces those of our familiares are the ones both most difficult to play fantastic tricks with, and most difficult really to see with fresh attention. They have become like the things which once attracted us by their glitter, or their colour, or their shape, and we laid hands on them, and then locked them in our hoard, acquired them, and acquiring ceased to look at them. Creative fantasy, because it is mainly trying to do something else [make something new], may open your hoard and let all the locked things fly away like cage-birds. The gems all turn into flowers or flames, and you will be warned that all you had (or knew) was dangerous and potent, not really effectively chained, free and wild; no more yours than they were you." -On Fairy Stories

Yes, I wonder if it is old news someone just picked up on.

As far as I can tell, all the information on Ian's Hobbit entry in his filmography is what we knew roughly in December. What the story that was linked doesn't mention is that Ian will be playing in Waiting for Godot in the Sydney Opera House from June 15-27. Maybe he'll play Gandalf for a while before that, or in July after the Wellington Godot run (June 30-July 2) is over. My hunch is that the reporter just got the June date from the filmography rather than from some new announcement by Ian. You'd think if he had just added the June date to his website, he'd also mention it on his Facebook or Twitter pages, and there's not a hint of it there. (I've got a brief blog entry on this with some relevant links.)

I should know to not trust that a journo has double-checked the details! That's what I get for posting on the fly.

How soon before the shooting of the LOTR moofies were the casting announcements made? Can we expect, for example, to only find out a month or two before principal shooting begins? Andy

The Australian tour of Waiting for Godot runs 6th May - June 27th...it then runs for 4/5 dates in NZ. So at the very earliest production couldn't start until Early July and I'm pretty sure they'll want all the actors there a few weeks before for read-throughs and to establish some sort of a bond between actors. Thing are rarely shot in order but I think in this case they'll want to start at the beginning since it's such a huge actor ensemble for the 'adventurers' Early casting isn't going to be completed until April. I know that for a fact. It all just seems a little rushed to me. : D

The Variety announcements of the casting for LOTR were: Elijah Wood and Ian McKellen, July; Christopher Lee and Liv Tyler, August; Viggo Mortensen (announced to be in talks to replace Stuart Townsend) and Cate Blanchett October. All 1999, of course, and principal photography began October 11 with the four hobbit cast members. So about three months for the earliest official casting announcements--but this film is different, in that some cast members are already known and have been for quite some time--and the casting of others has undoubtedly been going on for months, even though contracts can't be signed until the greenlight comes.

Excellent observation! But as you pointed out, we know of only a handful of cast returning. Who is to say that the role of Bilbo was not secured last month/week/year and just waiting for the right time to announce.

My understanding is that the studio issues are preventing contracts

Which means that, though they may have a shortlist for the not-already-cast roles, they can't make official offers (which would necessarily include things like pay, contracted work time, etc.) Considering the amount of time necessary for this shoot, most working actors are going to be hesitant to make verbal commitments on this without that contract. Which means things are very unlikely to be set in stone for any of the major roles.

..as if the various "creative" parties are very close to deciding on filming TH in 3D. So to that end, Guillermo and PJ are moving to go back and re-write the relevant parts of the script, perhaps calling for filming in outdoor locations for big set-pieces that cannot be replicated wholy indoors on a set )ie, Laketown, the River, etc)...to begin in October, in warmer weather. In the meantime, Guilermo as we know is imptient to get things going, so maybe they are planning for a "staggered schedule" scaneio. Might go something like this: 1) As WB spends the next couple months entangled in the MGM business--say, plan for a few months, until May or June, wrangling over the paperwork if they get hold of MGM 2)As this is going on, PJ and Guillermo re-write the relevant parts of the script for such scenes as above, that require major revisions for 3 D filming. Of course, if 3d is a reality they'll haver to tinker with the whole script, but scenes taking place in indoor sets won't need as much tinkering with the script, since they'll need less digital work, basically filmed the same way, so those scenes won;t take as long to write. The plan may be for these "indoor" parts of the script to be filmed first, so the actors signed up now for these scenes may be needed now, while people such as Ron Perlman (if he is cast as Beorn) can go off and film projects in the firsthalf of 2009, and if filming gets underway for the outdoor set-pices such as the Carrow where they;d need Ron or whoever plays Beorn, he won't be needed until then, so he can go off and commit to another project until then. (Or whoever plays Beorn). Same with Elrond scenes...if they are going to rebuild Rivendell in the Park where it was before, then they may not be filming that until October + either, and anyway, Elrond is a small part. So ditto for Hugo Weaving--he can go off and film another project. Captian America is a big project, but he;d only need say 2 weeks of filming, like Cate did for LOTR. SO under this scenarioit could work. 3) As WB finishes the MGM stuff, say, until May-June, the 3D script is completed, or mostly completed. It goes without saying that the green light can''t come ujntil this is done, as a dramtic uptick of the budget is now at hand ..but then, so would a dramtic uptick of the profits. Then, the greenlight could come in June,, and filming of the "indoor" stuff could begin soon after that. Such as Hobbiton, Gandalf's stuff, etc. Of course we would have our Bilbo by then too! So Ian can begin filming his stuff in June with "Bilbo",. But if we don't have the greenlight by mid-summer... 4)It goes without saying that anyone with a "major" role is still standing by, anyone who could begin the earliest filming. So don't take "we don't have a cast" with a grain of salt IMO..theydo, but they can't say anything yet. 5) And then when all the script revisons are done. they can begin the "real" filming in October +. But I still don't like the idea of a "staggered" schedule..but I guess anything goes for this project...how long would a 3D script revision take? Excuse my blathering people

but if true, VERY exciting! BTW, at the risk of sounding infantile, if it's going to be in 3D then Liv better damn well be in the movie(s).

And contrary to prior anxiety specs. the middle of the year is actually May through August and any point in between. April is part of the first quarter of the year, not the center. If they start filming at any time in June, July or early August, it still meets up with the original projection. but if true, VERY exciting! BTW, at the risk of sounding infantile, if it's going to be in 3D then Liv better damn well be in the movie(s). "Hear me, hounds of Sauron, Gandalf is here! Fly if you value your foul skins, I will shrivel you from tail to snout if you step within this circle!" "Do not be to eager to deal out death in judgement. Even the very wise cannot see all ends."

Hi, first time posting - hope I don't make a mess of it :-) Anyway, came across a report in the bbc website dated today concerning Ian McKellen's comment about a July start for filming. Later in this article it mentions New Line... "According to studio New Line, the first film will be an adaptation of The Hobbit, the novel Tolkien published before his Lord of the Rings cycle. The second will be an original story focusing on the 60 years between the book and the beginning of the Rings trilogy" Now I am really confused!

I believe that as of two days ago, when I last checked, it still said June. (Someone please correct me if I read it wrongly.) If the date has been changed to July since then, it lends credibility to the idea that the run of Waiting for Godot in Wellington ending on July 2 was timed to allow him to be on the spot.

The "july" switch which you mentioned was apparantly done very recently, which means that this may not just be some old stuff, and that maybe Sir Ian knows that shooting will begin in july?
