Meet Smaug, the cake, my just turned 8 year old son is in the middle of reading the Hobbit, and so for his birthday this pass Sunday as it were, he requested Smaug, it goes very nicely with his Baggend cake just last year, pipeweed and all. It took 4 days and I am still trying to catchup with sleep, and 2 days later it remains on my kithcen table uncut, but not for long because his hours are numbered. 
A few facts about this cake - Edible parts lemon cake, white chocolate ganache, rice crispy treats & modeling chocolate
- non-edible parts, PVC piping for the body & copper tubing for the wings
- The wings are edible besides the copper tubing
- I did add gems to the belly remembering to leave out one area bare (teehee)
- Yes there is a Gold cup for the burglar to steal
- Bilbo is not edible I was too tired to attempt to make him, but we did add two of the many action figures we have of Bilbo for the pics.

It looks fantastic Maria.It's almost too good to cut up and eat. Im guessing for an 8 year old, destroying Smaug will be the best part.

It looks so good I wouldn't mind the real Smaug looking like that. Er, the film Smaug, I guess I should say.

It looks like wax to me.
All the little details, like the airbrushing...the nice balance in the sculpted eyes, the horns.
4 days?
Very efficient work. PVC probably doesn't do well in the oven 'tho, huh.
Very Interesting, thanks for sharing. Don't forget to let your boy know...Smaug was Golden-Red, but not without his own tarnished charm, as they say. Might have been why he liked to be near treasure.

When I first saw it, it didn't look like a cake at all. Wow. The detail and color are incredible. Wonderful job!

The first thing my boys said to me was, "Mom, why can't you ever make us a cake like that". Well, it would just end up as a big blob of cake and icing if I attempted such a masterpiece as this. Very amazing and so well done! Bet he had a great birthday! And that would be so hard to cut the cake, but I guess Smaug sort of has it coming, hehehe. Thank you for sharing and hope you have caught back up on your sleep now!
