Bilbo will be played by an unknown actor who will perform the scenes, but the image will be overlapped with a computer graphic version of a younger Ian Holm (more and less like Andy Serkis with Gollum). Ian Holm will be probably involved in the project, but most of the acting will be performed in New Zealand by an unknown actor (they are casting now) in motion capture technology, as the one developed by WETA for "Tin Tin". Smaug and other characters will be also performed using this technique. For who is thinking "bull...t": look at PJ's "Tin Tin", that's the easiest solution to keep continuity with TLOTR considering the massive achievement of the computer graphic 10 years later. Bingoooo!!

As said in another thread, that process is overly expensive, overly complicated, and extremely time-consuming. And while we have made great strides in computer generated imagery, we are not yet at a place to digitally render a human to perfection. One of the worst things GDT and Co. could do would be to put in a digital replica of Ian Holm and not have it pass off as the real deal. The second it becomes clear it is CGI, the movie's credibility is shot.

...to casting the main character of one of the most anticipated movies in recent years... how did you come to this conclusion...it sounded fairly set in stone...are you privvy to inside info on this? I wonder if the studio would go for this idea...(hand over chin, tapping, thinking...not likely) cast the most appropriately aged and talented live actor qualified for the role...there's an idea... old fashioned, I know...but gosh darn it...it just might work.

It's too bad time travel hasn't been invented yet as the crew could simply go back to when Ian Holm was younger and shoot it with him anyway. Unless they end up picking up someone magically good, Holm will forever be ingrained in my mind as THE Bilbo. So far, few of the names I've heard in speculation have really done it for me. Martin Freeman comes close, but I doubt he'll be cast. Regardless I am super stoked about the casting process and can't wait to find out who's playing who. x3

Were there things that Bilbo did or thoughts he had that could not or would not be believable if done/thought by a younger person? Or are you referring to specific time frame and events of the entire saga - that the story itself would not make sense if Bilbo's age was younger?

I just hope that they are able to cast this one like they did the trilogy. Studios and directors are often at odds when casting, the director wants the actor that can best bring life to his vision, the studio wants someone "bankable" As an actor I have been in this position, pushed out of a role because a name actor became available at the last minute. Anyway... the thing that I loved about the trilogy is that at every turn, Peter got actors that absolutely nailed it, several of them with no public track record. My favorite performances were from Billy Boyd. That Peter got nameless actors into major roles on a 270 mil dollar film was a testament to the trust that the studio put in him. I really, really hope this one goes the same way.

My thoughts: a)Bilbo is de facto lead. The book is about him and it is not an ensemble piece like LOTR. hence the title The Hobbit. b)Bilbo is multi-layered character and definitely NOT a comical bafoon and goofball. He is sarcastic, sharp-witted, often irritated by dwarfish stupidity and attempts to exploit him, cunning and bent on getting even with dwarfs (for above mentioned reasons),and he has a quite remarkable prowess as an action man. Also, at the end of the book, we see he is compassionate and forgiving. c) Outside Bilbo, the only developed characters or characters who really have character/personality are Thorin, Smaug and Gandalf. Other dwarfs barely register and among them only Balin and Kili and Fili because they take Bilbo`s side and because K&F are Thorin`s nephews and the youngest of the bunch. Bard and Beorn are just episodes and one-dimesnsional good guys. Laketown Master is a standard power-hungry coward while Elven King is whatever. I really don`t have any opinion on him. Bland dude who likes wine, apparently.Gollum is Gollum and just an episode. d) Bilbo is the hero of Smaug Slaying because he cunningly goaded the dragon to reveal his weak spot. It was pure luck that the bird whispered Bilbo`s finding into bard`s ear so Bilbo is the hero in my book, not Who Hell He. Therefore, a comedian wouldn`t be too suitable to play Bilbo since comedy isn`t Bilbo essence nor is his the most typical trait. he is sharp-minded and cunning. Everything else is secondary.

I would add Sir Patrick Stewart as a candidate for Master of Lake Town. IMHO that role would suit him better than a dwarf.

Heard him on the radio today and thought...oooh.... he'd make a very threatening Goblin King. He is a very convincing bad guy. Although he did play the Beaver in Narnia but that's about the only good guy role I can think he's had. He gravitates towards the Dark Side.

I love the idea of Billy Connolly as Thorin. I mean, really really love. I think he would totally nail it. I'll probably be happy with whomever is chosen for whatever role, since I have been waiting for these films since FOTR when I was 15. Is it weird that I get really excited every time I hear anything new about these movies??

In ,my head, he is a lot like Stephen Fry in that respect, only Hobbity. b)Bilbo is multi-layered character and definitely NOT a comical bafoon and goofball. Am not putting Mr Fry forward as my 'choice' , I just think he could portray the Bilbo characteristics with regards to personality.

Clive Standen who played Archer(robins brother) in Robin Hood would be a good Bard and has all the sword/archery/horseback skills required...and has been linked to pirates 4 for some time so would not be surprised to hear his name mentioned in the coming weeks he has been compared to Errol Flynn in the UK press so there is definitely a buzz around him with the studios here is a link to the imdb page http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1641140/

Peter Jackson jump started the careers of several actors in LOTR. It's probably been covered, but why not cast some actors who are no-names who can do just as good a job for less money and help them out? Everyone keeps name dropping actors who are already known. I came across this video on youtube the other day: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3as8iBonwpE It has two Canadian actors who look like they are brothers (or at least relatives based on the last names...could be coincidence), which Fili and Kili are already. The video is a little corny...clearly some budget issues... but they look great as the duo. They even used the right colours for their costumes. Why not give them a shake at the roles?

I simply cannot imagine anyone else as Bilbo except Ian Holm. He is...well, he is Bilbo! :) I do hope they try and keep some continuity and pick someone who looks a little like a younger Holm, and then with make up added, someone we could at least "buy" as Holm's Bilbo. I think that's going to be the toughest sell for me is to accept anyone else as Bilbo. It's going to be a lot to put on an actor, and I feel for whoever ends up being cast...he's going to have a lot of weight on his shoulders, that no one else really had in LOTR. Heck I know people who aren't even big fantasy fans, but LOVED LOTR, in large part because Holm's performance in Fellowship really drew them into Middle Earth from the get go. They were hooked for the rest of Trilogy.

The Voice for Smaug :- Well it`s goto be Christopher Lee! or.. Anthony Hopkins ! ...... Both are Icons of evil, plus having the upperclass English accent or welsh if it was Anthony Hopkins for playing these type of parts ... Plus Anthony Hopkins being Welsh has a strong connection with: Dragons...both would do this role justice... Actually, Anthony Hopkins is not a bad idea! I actually think Christopher Lee would probably be my choice, except he's already Saruman, and I'm quite sure everyone would recognize his voice and say "hey isn't the Saruman from LOTR? Is Smaug Saruman???) I think it would be too confusing for people who had never read the books. Plus, Hopkins has that subtle, "he's thinking of 15 ways to kill you right now" sound in his voice when playing a villain...he definitely could be the dragon of all dragons. It would be fun to get Lee in the film, and voicing Smaug would be the way to do it, but I fear without flanging his voice digitally it would confuse people. (plus his voice doesn't need alteration, it's already so evil on it's own...lol!) I actually think other than Bilbo, Smaug is going to be the hardest to cast because so much of the story relies on him, and he must have a magnetic personality, I think Hopkins fits that role and who know he can act. Though it would be fun to pick someone more obscure...it will be interesting to see what they end doing in the end.
