But McAvoy nixed the Bilbo rumour and GDT nixed Tom Cruise and David Tennant rumours and GDT&PJ&Tobey Maguire PR nixed Tobey rumour. That`s 4 actors down.

I really do hope the role goes to an unknown - an absolute gem of an actor that they pluck from relative obscurity. Because all the actors mentioned so far just don't feel like Bilbo to me at all. Not even Martin Freeman which a lot of people are saying would be perfect. Although he does look like the quintessential hobbit if he was cast I know I'd keep seeing Arthur Dent or Tim from The Office and not Bilbo.

"..an absolute gem of an actor that they pluck from relative obscurity. " [In reply to] Can't Post

This would be ideal to me.

I don't think it will happen, but it would be ideal. Barring that, I am in the Martin Freeman camp.

But we know these "absolute gems" are out there. Maybe it's a good thing that it seems to be taking so long to cast Bilbo--maybe the PTB are looking for just that unknown gem. One can only hope.

Only a problem if his wife doesnt want to go to new zealand. [In reply to] Can't Post

Not that I am supporting Macavoy for the role. Or for that matter Martin Freeman, whos only credential seems to be looking vaguely like Ian Holme might have looked when he was younger.

Personally I would prefer a complete unknown, though someone did mention a guy who I quite liked, cant remember his name though, he played Lucien in underworld. Anyone remember his name? Either way I think he looks far more hobbity and he seems to be a slightly better actor than Mr Freeman. Though having seen very little of eithers work I cant make much of a comparison.

So preferably an unknown but skilled actor, though now I think about it a 35-40 year old unknown actor who looks like a hobbit and is a complete unknown will probably be quite hard to come by.

I definitely could see and believe Michael Sheen delivering a justifiable Bilbo.

slight resemblence to Billy Boyd...

"slightly" better? [In reply to] Can't Post

Ahem, ahem, Michael Sheen is one of the greatest talents of his generation so calling him "slightly" better than Martin Freeman is huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge understatement and ...OMG, I`m fanning myself now or I`m gonna faint!

Twilight, as a film...well, I'm not gonna say it sucked, but it did indeed drain me of a great deal of precious life force...

I'm working on getting it all back eventually...good god what a nightmare that was....made me sore I watched it in the first place.
New Moon...haven't seen it...don't want to...

but Sheen...newly acceptable as potential Baggins.

Meh on Sheen [In reply to] Can't Post

Sheen hasn't been great in anything since Apocalypse Now (or if you're referring to the son - Platoon), and he's certainly no Bilbo Baggins. I looked and didn't see anyone saying that he was only slightly better than Martin Freeman, but whatever. I'm a bit tired of people dissin' on Freeman - he's a good actor, did just fine in The Office and Hitchhikers Guide - he can do the same kind of stuff in front of the movie camera that Martin Sheen or just about any other movie actor does - which is act reasonably well on demand out of sequence and instantly in the moment. As Anthony Hopkins once said "this isn't brain surgery".

All that said I'm not going to cry in my Cheerios if Freeman doesn't get the part.
