New Line Cinema readies a pair of "Hobbit" films Can't Post

Variety had a sit-down with New Line chief Toby Emmerich about the state of the modest, smaller and newly profitable film studio and its new existence under the Warner Bros. umbrella. The conversation turned of course to "The Hobbit." We learn, among other things that executive Michael Disco will oversee the two movies for the studio. Variety also spoke with Warner's Alan Horn who, according to the article, "... won't predict when the first of the two "Hobbit" films will be out, but says the most probable scenario would be a release in the fourth quarter of 2012."

It concludes with, "It's a big bet for us. But it's one we think will pay off given the success of 'Lord of the Rings,'" says Emmerich. "This is one of the few movies it feels like people are waiting for." We know a few people who are indeed waiting for these films. In fact that "2012" date that just got thrown around may start a riot. Remember fans biting your nails and tearing out you hair will not make things happen faster, nor will turning over cars or looting - they only leads to jail time. Read the whole story here.

So? [In reply to] Can't Post

Didn't we already know it would be released some time in 2012? I feel like I read that somewhere a while ago.

Yup [In reply to] Can't Post

You probably did read or hear about it recently. PJ did say in an interview that despite the rumors over the internet of the film being pushed to 2012, the first part of the movie is still scheduled for a 2011 release. What ever though, along as they release the movie before I am too old to care.

I'm getting quite annoyed [In reply to] Can't Post

With the inconsistent reports of when the first film is likely to be released.

Studio/s: 2012
Peter Jackson: 2011

Guess I'll have to endure such a headache until these films are officially greenlit and a press release is issued.

I wish for clearification. Will the first part be done and not released until 2012 pushing part two back to 2013.

Both parts released in 2012. Peter & GDT's part I in 20011 & part II in 2012.

He shakes his head.

The problem with 2012 and 2013 [In reply to] Can't Post

Is that there might not be a 2013 at all, as we have previously established. Tongue

I really hope for 2011... but things are starting to look a little bit tight time-wise.

Nobody could allow those two films to be released around the same time, right? They will both need too many screens.

sigh [In reply to] Can't Post

well, i have always feared this. since they are going to begin filming in may/june for 14 ~ months, leaves them just a few months for post-production. it seems too tight. And pushing it forward over a year seems unnecessary, but then again, december has always been the month for Tolkien films.

I do not know if this is signicant but [In reply to] Can't Post

(Horn won't predict when the first of the two "Hobbit" films will be out, but says the most probable scenario would be a release in the fourth quarter of 2012.) is a statement made by the article's author not Horn.

There may have been some confusion here. GDt & PJ both said that the second movie would be out in 2012. GDT also said that the movie had not been delayed.

"A big bet for us." What are you crazy? [In reply to] Can't Post

What is this guy thinking? What kind of a statement is that? Is the movie industry and WB/NewLine that clueless as to the market for these films? Most people are in agreement that they'll apprach the LotR in gross, but even if they don't, you're looking at films that are 100% guaranteed to make a huge return on thier investment. There's no bigger lock than these two movies. "A big bet for us." Come on man, give me a break.
