Afternoon guys, welcome to the mid-week Screencap of the Day.
Lets get straight to it: here we're with Aragorn & Arwen whilst Aragorn is debating his future....

- Aragorn looks very much at home in Rivendell, but where do you think he'd call his "true home"? Would it be Rivendell or elsewhere?
- I love the Elven architecture & decoration. What do you think of the surroundings and, in particular, the chaise longue Aragorn's sat on?
- (Following Monday's SCOD) Did Aragorn know of Eowyn's feelings towards him at this point? Would he feel any guilt for turning her down later on?
- Tolkien has said somewhere that LotR is a love story. Would you dis/agree?
- Book Firsters: Were you satisfied with the relationship portrayal on screen?
- Movie Firsters: Did you think the relationship between these two would end up as it did? Did you have any ideas, or was it obvious?
And, as a language enthusiast I'm curious about this, do you think their children would be bilingual? Would they be brought up according to Elvish custom, or as Men?

Well, in the book it is Lorien where his heart dwells forever... here, they've transposed the beginning of their love to Rivendell. So I suppose we could say yes to that. Gondor is where his duty calls him, in true heroic fashion.

I want one of these! Well, me and a million other people. Looks very elegant yet comfortable.

No idea. Possibly not here, as this is before her big outburst at Helm's Deep.
4. Tolkien has said somewhere that LotR is a love story. Would you dis/agree?
Well, if it is a love story, it is a love of green earth and swift streams and trees and mountains... I think the physical presence of ME is stronger than any single character.
As to the portrayal of Aragorn and Arwen's love: I was surprised that it was such a strong element in the film (Fran and Philippa having cleverly mined the Lay of Aragorn and Arwen). I think it is problematic in any way, still too much the damsel in her bower, waiting for her hero (in Tolkien as well, and he of course was drawing on materials where gender relations were portrayed like that). They tried all they could to make Arwen more active and involved, stopping short of XenArwen episodes... but I do like that they are lovers in every sense of the word. After all, if you have waited 3000 years for the right guy, there is not a moment to lose!
And is Arwen's gown really that see-through, or is it an optical illusion in that image?

of their lives and surroundings here with Minas Tirith. Her world is green, lush and peaceful while Minas Tirith is a city carved out of stone. I wonder if she's thinking about that here. Her devotion to Aragorn is complete.
I also love this scene because it has one of the most romantic and beautiful kisses I've ever seen on film :)
Yeah... these are great shots of the only time we see Arwen and Aragorn quiet together. Both shoeless ;)

As a book firster I was very happy with the A&A relationship. (Except for the whole 'it was a dream, Arwen' stuff. Obviously.) I liked the way it was given more screen time in the films than the books. I don't really think this was taking any liberties since in the book we know that Arwen is in his thoughts all the time - she's his reason for being and the ultimate goal at the end of everything he's striving to do. Besides, if we saw as little of Arwen on screen as we did in the books, why should people who've not read the books even care about her character?
Aragorn says that his home if he has one is in the north, doesn't he? Not sure if he actually says that in the films though.
I think LOTR can definitely be considered a love story (on multiple levels). Or at least as a Romance in the older sense.

Home? Aragorn is rather a vagabond, isn't he? Born in the North, raised in Rivendell...then wandered all over Middle-earth.
Rivendell is so in sync with the natural environment. Some of the homes I see on HGTV seem to be trying to replicate the look  .
Aragorn/Eowyn story from a film firster's POV--the possibility that Aragorn had a clue about Eowyn's feelings was there, for me--although the issue is certainly open to interpretation! Something about Aragorn tellling Eowyn that the woman who gave him the jewel was *gone* seemed to kind of be the opening of a door. Very ambiguous, I know. Could be Aragorn was just confiding in a friendly soul but could be that he had a clue of her feelings and was considering the possibility at that point. Then that gaze-holding shot as Aragorn rode off to the warg battle. Nailed it for me!!  Of course, a fuller reading of the books shot down that theory later. However, I do believe the film makers very much left that whole relationship thing open to interpretation --a bit a dramatic spice, if you will.
Love story--yes. But more than *just* romatic love.
And by the end of it all---things fell into place and, yes, I was satisfied with the outcome. Whadda smooch!!!!!!!!!

Lots implied here, just by the sheer costuming on Arwen, the bed-like lounge, the barefeet -- uh, where was I again?
My kids used to have a TTT poster that had Aragorn in the middle, holding his sword in front of him, with Arwen on one side and Eowyn on the other -- well, you know what they were implying there, too ,with that pointy sword and those two women!
While they may have used an implied rivalry between Eowyn and Arwen in the promotion, and they left some film scenes open to interpretation, to me movie Aragorn would always love Arwen -- Eowyn only reminded him of what he was missing, and I think he was more sympathetic to what was going on with her than romantically interested in her.
Viggo, somewhere, talks about how A &A have been together for a long time -- and that that was how he played his relationship with her. Speaking as someone who's been married 20 years, I think the romance came across very true on screen in that context. But if people were looking for the kind of thrill/excitement of new love in the romantic part of the film, which is the more common way love interests are shown in movies, I can see why they would have gravitated more toward Aragorn and Eowyn as a couple on screen, especially if they were movie-firsters.
