LOTR Movie Narrative Chart- you have to see it to believe it Can't Post

One of my favorite comics of all time, xkcd, often throws in random nerdiness in its strips.

Its most recent comic takes LOTR and four other movies and shows character interactions in what can be described- simply- as a line chart. Only its the most complicated line chart of all time.

Take a look for yourself. Large picture, so warning for dial-up users.

Really nice! Thank you! [In reply to] Can't Post

Two minor points (remember, I am a professional nitpicker) -
1. Elrond joins Aragorn in Dunharrow too early (before Gandalf and Pippin left).
2. There is nothing in the movie to indicate Gandalf returned north with the Hobbits (it's in the book - as far as Bree).

But once again, a really fine achivement!

LOL, it looks like a subway system map!

I love the thick black "tree trunk" lines of orcs etc. coming up from Sauron. Sinister!

Thanks, Ainu! Smile

I love how Gandalf swoops up and down - he's all over the board! Busybody. and how Boromir's line continues for a ways with a note - "dead"

thanks for sharing

I would have liked a line [In reply to] Can't Post

for Rosie. Joining up with Sam's on the far right, and a note, "The End"

"That is one thing that Men call 'hope.' Amdir we call it, 'looking up.' But there is another which is founded deeper. Estel we call it, that is 'trust.' It is not defeated by the ways of the world, for it does not come from experience, but from our nature and First Being. If we are indeed the Eruhin, the Children of the One, then He will not suffer Himself to be deprived of His own, not by any enemy, not even by ourselves. This is the last foundation of estel, which we keep even when we contemplate the End. Of all His designs the issue must be for His children's joy."

I was thinking an extended X-axis with a Arwen's line running all by itself after a while would have been poignant.

But thank you, Ainu for pointing this out - it's a way cool chart!

About Boromir [In reply to] Can't Post

It might have been kinda neat for the author to have continued Boromir's line after the dead symbol and have it intersect Faramir's line Unsure

Very cool, Ainu - [In reply to] Can't Post

Do you suppose the author could be persuaded to post just the LOTR picture? I'm sure I'm not the only one who would like to print it out.

I can edit the picture to remove the other movies for my own use, but I'm sure the author wouldn't like someone else to pass their work on to others.

Well, it's part of a comic strip [In reply to] Can't Post

The punchline being the "Primer" film at the end of the strip (and you only need to read the Wikipedia entry to get that he was completely and utterly correct XD). I know that others have cropped his more complicated panels like this before- if you wish, you can put a watermark with xkcd.com somewhere in the pic, since that's the url of the comic strip home page.

If you don't have Photoshop, I can quickly do a crop and watermark and post a link up here for anyone who is interested in printing out the LOTR part only.

xkcd is licensed under a creative commons attribution license [In reply to] Can't Post

So you can do whatever you want to it, and redistribute it to whomever you want, but you can't sell it, and you have to say where it came from.

See http://xkcd.com/license.html

For instance, on the planet Earth, man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much -- the wheel, New York, wars, and so on -- while all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man, for precisely the same reasons. -- Douglas Adams

Woo woo! I was just logging in to post this myself! [In reply to] Can't Post

My sister sent it to me. A friend of hers had sent it to her, knowing she writes novels. In our writers' group she's known for catching what we call 'choreography' mistakes, so a chart like this is suitable.

I particularly was struck by the sudden extinctions of the big lines of orcs. Whew!

You can find a smaller version by erasing the 'large' part of the url.

You took the words... [In reply to] Can't Post

right out of my mouth.
And the Balrog? There should have been a dotted line showing the Balrog going back from the First Age or something, witha bog HUGE black splotch at Moria showing its death at Gandalf's hands, after so many millenia.
Ditto for Shelob, though for a smaller timespan of course.

And of course another line showing Sam going out on the Ship "following" Frodo much later....
