FOTR appendices discussion - Cameras in Middle-earth 4 Can't Post

Humour on set

Dominic Monaghan on the lighting of the dragon firework: "Billy, being this slightly feminine character, was really quite scared by it, and made this girly kind of 'Whoohoohoooho!' shriek, which I barely got through the take on."
Billy Boyd: "I just, like, got such a fright, and Dominic just gave me abuse for it all day."

Liv Tyler: "Bringing Arwen's voice down to a lower register showed her depth, her age and her wisdom. ... When my Dad saw the movie for the first time he was like, 'Who's voice was that?', and I was like, 'Dad, you jerk, it's mine! I'm an actress!"

Christopher Lee had considerable difficulty getting up the steps to his throne while wearing his "extremely long" costume, managing to do it sometimes but not at others. "At one point I said, 'I'm sorry, I can't get up the goddamn steps smoothly. I can't do it Peter.' A voice came from near the camera saying, 'Well you did it this morning', which put me in my place."

What do these anecdotes tell you about the actors? Do you relate to them more? What do they tell you about life on the set?

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

"Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauronís master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded b*****d with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.

They are just like us (sort of) [In reply to] Can't Post

I think that this tells me that the actors are human like me (well, sort of Wink) and I do relate to them more. What do they tell me about life on the set? I think you might call it the *MASH* syndrome where people far from home, working in unpleasant conditions, with stretches of boredom will clown around and play practical jokes just to maintain their sanity. Been there, done that!

Good point about them being far from home [In reply to] Can't Post

and bonding over a long period of time. I would think that would be rare in film-making. How many other films have had a very long shoot? Cleopatra, maybe?

some great stories... [In reply to] Can't Post

What do these anecdotes tell you about the actors?
That they'd better be able to handle being the butt of a joke and/or having their abilities really tested and/or questioned!
Do you relate to them more?
Sure. It's so easy to be in *awe* of these people. Nice to see them off a pedestal.
What do they tell you about life on the set?
Well, that it was life--not just a day job.

"I...got such a fright!" Bwahahaha!!! [In reply to] Can't Post

I just LOVE BILLEH!!!! He cracks me right up... and Dom... forget about it! With those 2 around, how did anything ever get done!?

Yeah... these anecdotes really do give you such a great feel of many days on the set. Especially Peter's quiet way of "directing" Mr. Lee. No muss, no fuss. *snigger*

sample

"There is more in you of good than you know, child of the kindly West."
~Hug like a hobbit!~ "In my heaven..."

I really need these new films to take me back to, and not re-introduce me to, that magical world.
