10-year-old boy fights to save hotel where Tolkien wrote part of LOTR... Can't Post

The Three Cups is destined to be converted into flats.

Hmm... maybe he should start a web petition... it would certainly garner a lot of signatures from Tolkien geeks...

Well...he did not actually write there... [In reply to] Can't Post

I appreciate the young man's fevor, but as I'd mentioned in an earlier post: that place was where Tolkien engaged in artistic endeavours, not writing.

Quote
When Tolkien and his brother were under the care of Father Francis, he would take them there for summer holiday. Tolkien loved the landscape of that area, and did a considerable amount of sketching, drawing, and painting of it.

Later, he would take his own family there on holiday, and he continued with this hobby. But there is no record, as far as I know, of him actually writing any of The Hobbit or LotR there!

I don't personally care about it [In reply to] Can't Post

He did some art there, big deal. I don't think we need to worship every building Tolkien went into or every bit of ground he stood on. He was a wonderful writer, but still, he was only human like the rest of us. It's still very sweet of the biy though.

I admire that ... [In reply to] Can't Post

The mere fact that he's taking a stand for something he believes in is inspiring. For crying out loud, it's a ten-year-old boy leading a march to save a hotel. That's gotta count for something.

George Washington Stayed Here [In reply to] Can't Post

Although it is highly doubtful that Tolkien wrote The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings at the Three Cups, he did stay there. It is likely that the region was an influence on his concept of The Shire.

This is not a new issue. Andrew Townsend, who has been writing about The Hobbit for HollywoodJesus.com, created a Blog, "Save The Three Cups," back in 2004. http://save3cups.blogspot.com/

Come on now.....

You are comparing writing a couple books to founding a country?

That's just not right.

What's wrong with that? [In reply to] Can't Post

What's wrong with preserving historical buildings? The Inn has more connections to it than just Tolkien. Recently, the town council had a meeting with the people of the town who voted (unanimously, if I remember correctly) to preserve the building. I don't understand your negativity.

You Didn't [In reply to] Can't Post

Present it as being a building with 'historical connections' other than Tolkien....

To simply save a building because Tolkien hung out there and drank a few beers is a bit too much.

Fantastic that the guy wrote some fantastic books - my favorite books written by man in fact.

That's not being negative, it's being realistic.

But to accord the same type of honor as 'George Washington slept here' to a building for a writer is absurd.
England has plenty of its own real heroes to honor for that type of stuff with their long and storied history.....
I could certainly see 'Admiral Nelson slept here' or 'Winston Churchill slept here' for example.

Saving a building that has historical signifigance, great, it's done all the time for much lesser things, like a building just being really old (at least where I'm from).

I certainly have no problem with that.

Good luck in your efforts to save the Three Cups, smidget. Would you mind keeping us updated with your progress? I'm sure there are a few people on the discussion boards who would like to know how this goes.

It is an honour to meet you [In reply to] Can't Post

valiant young master *bow low*.
It is wishful that you are successful in your efforts and that you will bring tidings of the happenings. Thank you very much for stopping in.

''What connects Nature to the spiritual, or requires the presence of the latter? In positive terms, as Alkis Kontos points out, when nature was still largely experienced as integral, alive and active, 'It was the spiritual dimension of the world, its enchanted, magical quality that rendered it infinite, not amenable to complete calculability; spirit could not be quanified; it permitted and invited mythologization.' And I would add, it still is and does.''

Here is where the birds of Manwe fly
Looking at the land, and the water that flows
The true beauty of earth shows
With the stars of Varda lighting my way
In all the realms this is where I stay
In the realm of Manwë Súlimo

Do you know if [In reply to] Can't Post

they have any reproductions of his drawings on their walls? Tolkien loved the scenery of that area, and those would make a fantastic display!

And welcome to TORn, smidget!
