Sets for ‘The Hobbit’ Being (re?)built! Can't Post

Thanks to the folks at Red Carpet Tours for this one: A spy has uncovered some exciting developments regarding a film set for The Hobbit - but all he can say at the moment is that an official announcement will be coming from Peter Jackson’s people later this week. Stay tuned!

Im thinking... [In reply to] Can't Post

That Hobbiton would be number one on the list...I mean they have to get all that greenery re-grown...how long was preproduction for that set the first go round, my memory is getting hazy.

I am obsessed, but I am in excellent company.

Growing Hobbiton [In reply to] Can't Post

I think Hobbiton took about a year to eighteen months for everything to grow, which sounds about right. It's so exciting it's like being a kid again - have to smile at myself sometimes. Reading LotR and watching the films again (for the umptytumth time...) Would SO love to visit New Zealand...

(psst - I think I'm replying to the wrong post - this is first ever post here, please forgive Smile )

Hobbiton [In reply to] Can't Post

The company that provides tours around the Hobbiton set at Matamata can be found at www.hobbitontours.com. I've been checking their website regularly for the last 6 months or so beacuse I would imagine that once the rebuild commences the tours will either cease altogether or be scaled back with reduced access. I'm sure that this information will need to be posted by them at some point.

I'm surprised that They have not stopped already, what with how tight things were before. But with the 18 month preproduction time...after all its winter now...or late fall in NZ...they will need to be ready for the growing season....Gah, its so damned exciting to know its all in the works!!!

I am obsessed, but I am in excellent company.

Re: Hobbiton [In reply to] Can't Post

It certainly is winter - the temperature here in Auckland this morning was 2 deg C! Still the advantage to that is I'm only 90 minutes drive from Hobbiton Cool

I know! [In reply to] Can't Post

I mean I didn't know for sure if it was the dead of winter yet...But I do know Auckland is 90min from Matamata...had the wonderful opportunity to tour your lovely country...in 2003 I was there for the WP. so much fun,

...well except for the little mishap with the car somewhere between Matamata and our next stop...oops; head on collision with a car load of Maori. Totaled the rental but thankfully no injuries...And no we were not on the wrong side of the road...lol, well we were but we were passing, and a tour bus wouldn't let us back in....Put a dent in both the car and our plans.

I'm not sure where else in the world that the police would drive us to our next stop and give us a guided tour at the same time. Everyone was so nice...

hope you warm up a bit...meanwhile get a blanket and sit by the fire.

I am obsessed, but I am in excellent company.

Shocked Sorry to hear about the car accident - Sounds like you were lucky to walk away from that one. Mind you NZ roads are notoriously bad; too many 30kph corners after a 100kph straight. Glad it didn't spoil your trip here too much.

On the contrary.. [In reply to] Can't Post

yeah we lost a day of seeing the stinky sites around Rotorua; It really emphasized the difference between the US and NZ. There was a huge mix up with the new/ replacement rental it was delivered to the town near the accident where old car was taken, of course we had no way to get it. The garage owner sent his wife and daughter to pick us up and take us back to get the car. We were so thankful for them, amazing because here in my area...It would have been "yeah thats not MY problem." WE were so grateful for their assistance we stopped and saw them on our way back to Auckland. It was very funny because they presented us with a news paper with our pictures in it...They were excited that someone they'd helped out was interviewed for the WP...lol. Anyway I'll never forget their kindness, nor the experience of the Kiwi culture.

I am obsessed, but I am in excellent company.

Hobbiton rebuild [In reply to] Can't Post

We here in NYC had a visit from GDT to push his new novel recently... while there I pressed into his hand a letter to PJ from me and few others. We requested since they will be rebuilding/replanting Hobbiton and Bag End, that they film an appendix to the LOTR Trilogy... the Scouring of the Shire. I doubt if it will have any impact whatsoever, but it was worth a try!! We argued that it would make a nice selling point for an anniversary reissue of the 3 films and was essential a la the book to show how the 4 hobbits mature and develop into heroes capable of rescuing their homes.

Timothy Fisher alias "Timdalf"

"... The Word of God Himself, He, indeed, assumed humanity that we might become as God..." St. Athanasius of Alexandria "On the Incarnation"

The fear of the end is the source of all lovelessness. Richard Wagner's Letters

Saruman: Can we not have peace, you and I?
King Theoden: We shall have peace. (pause) When you answer for the burning of the Westfold. And the children that lie dead there. We shall have peace when the lives of the soldiers whose bodies were hewn even as they lay dead against the Hornburg are avenged. When you hang from a gibbet for the sport of your own crows, we shall have peace. Tolkien - "The Return of the King"

Frodo: It is a pity Bilbo did not kill Gollum when he had the chance.
Gandalf: Pity? It was pity that stayed Bilbo's hand. Many that live deserve death, and some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them, Frodo? (Frodo frowns.) Do not be so eager to deal out death in judgment, even the very wise cannot see all ends.
Frodo: I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.
Gandalf: So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All we have to do is decide what to do with the time that is given us. There are other forces at work in the world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Tolkien - "The Fellowship of the Ring"
