The Hunt For Gollum: A short interview with the director. Can't Post

Heres a recent interview with Chris Bouchard, the director of the The Hunt for Gollum fan film on the BBC website.

Making Middle-earth on a shoestring
http://news.bbc.co.uk/...tainment/8022623.stm

"...In the deep places he gives thought to music great and terrible; and the echo of that music runs through all the veins of the world in sorrow and in joy; for if joyful is the fountain that rises in the sun, its springs are in the wells of sorrow unfathomed at the foundations of the Earth. The Teleri learned much of Ulmo, and for this reason their music has both sadness and enchantment. Salmar came with him to Arda, he who made the horns of Ulmo that none may ever forget who once has heard them..."

"Of the beginning of days", The Silmarillion.

Great coverage for a fan film! [In reply to] Can't Post

This is really cool. I especially like the comments the BBC made about the movie. Of course, after making the old Chronicles of Narnia series, they should be easy to impress. Wink

Very interesting! [In reply to] Can't Post

I was happy to read this:

We got in touch with Tolkien Enterprises and reached an understanding with them that as long as we are completely non-profit then we're okay. We have to be careful not to disrespect their ownership of the intellectual property. They are supportive of the way fans wish to express their enthusiasm.

I'm somewhat surprised the Estate approved it, with their history of being so picky in what they approve, non-profit or no. But it's great that the filmmakers did the right thing and asked permission, and that the Estate is supportive of their efforts. Smile

Hmm, I wonder if they'd approve a film based on the Silmarillion?

Thanks for providing that quote, Smeagirl. I had not actually read the interview part of the article thinking it would probably just rehash stuff I already knew. I guess I was selective at the wrong time!

I saw a trailer for this film... [In reply to] Can't Post

online last week.....it looks very good. I would be interested in seeing the whole piece when it is available. I was wondering how the Tolkien Estate would feel about it. It was obviously done with some pretty decent financial backing, so it will probably circulate the old 'net. I was wondering if they were going to try and make some money off of it, as it looked like it was not cheap to do.

What's the matter, James? No glib remark? No pithy comeback?"

"pretty decent financial backing"? [In reply to] Can't Post

Not quite. The movie was filmed using volunteers with a total cost (according to the BBC article) of £3,000! (That's under $4,500 at the current exchange rate.) But as the BBC article says, "that doesn’t mean this fan-film looks like it was put together with cardboard and string."

It may not be major studio money.... [In reply to] Can't Post

but that is about 4,500 times the amount of money I have to spend on a fan movie at the moment.

Hehe, true! [In reply to] Can't Post

But considering that it has a cast and crew of about 160 people, along with many volunteer donations online and offline, it makes the cost less daunting :)

I have been following the Hunt for Gollum and Born of Hope for years now; I am so excited to see the Hunt for Gollum! It looks very well done.

I cannot wait to see this film, I have very high hopes.

It will feel strange to watch anyone by Viggo & Ian playing Aragorn & Gandalf, but I'm sure I'll manage. The trailer looks amazing, and I'm sure the finished product will be spectacular!

I thought I read that this will debut on the web on May 5th. Anyone know when and where to look?

Close the door, put out the light.
You know they won't be home tonight.

The winds of Thor are blowing cold.
They're wearing steel that's bright and true
They carry news that must get through.

They choose the path where no-one goes.

It's this Sunday, May 3. I believe it will be streaming on their Web site, www.thehuntforgollum.com. I know it's supposed to be on www.dailymotion.com, but I don't know if it's streaming at the same time as the actual premiere in London, like it will be on thehuntforgollum Web site.

If this helps, it will "go live" at 11 a.m. Sunday, Eastern Daylight Time, for those in the U.S. Figure out your time zone from there!

I just posted in a related thread before I saw your reply. If it's 4pm UK time, when would it be in Eastern US time? I want to make sure I hop on right when it debuts if I can...
