A summary of 'The Hobbit' casting discussion so far
|
Can't Post
|
|
"The Hobbit," has to be cast but that just leaves more time for fans to speculate, guess and suggest about the casting of the two-films planned by producer Peter Jackson and director Guillermo del Toro. There are a few givens. According to the decision makers, as many of the main characters that appear in both Jackson's LOTR trilogy and GDT's Hobbit films will be cast using existing actors from those roles as possible. And while media outlets trying to create news about the film have asked any actor they can find if they will appear, the list of sure crossovers are relatively small. Ian Holm, approaching 80 years old, has stated that he is too old to play Bilbo because of the physical demands of the role and the required relocation to New Zealand. So the search for the main character is on. Most readers will be familiar with characters like Gandalf that belong to actors such as Ian McKellen so they will not be rehashed here because there is no debate about who will fill the role. Other roles are open to speculation such as Aragorn's role from the LOTR appendices that might be used to flesh out parts of the two-movie set planned for December 2011 and 2012. While a few names have likely been missed here and there, we present the suggestions from TheOneRing.net's message boards. Check back soon on our "The Pollantir" section of our message boards for some unscientific voting. Please forgive any errors, there was a lot of information to be dealt with here. It must have taken you forever to put that together! Thanks for that great piece of work! I've lost track of suggestions long ago.
I do not suffer from LotR obsession - I enjoy every minute of it.

That is a mighty list MrCere! Thankyou so much! WOW! What a line-up. ... umm, but where's Russell Crowe for Beorn or Master of Lake Town? (see year old footer below) I see he has been relegated to the Dwarve section in the list I think we're also missing Brian Steele as one of the 3 Trolls or the Goblin King Yippeee - cant wait to see the real list! Cheers MrCere Elven x
Swishtail. Tolkien was a Capricorn!! Russell Crowe for Beorn!! Avatar: Liberace - The other Lord of the Rings. ... just how did you find the time and patience to put that list together. There must be over a 100 links in there Okay, so I was busy clicking links and getting all dreamy about the fact that one of these actors *might* actually be officially named one of these months, and then I reach SirD, and after a few moments of complete befuddlement, I'm jarred out of my dreamy state and find myself trying to rein my laughing self in I really need to be on the lookout for you sneaky little naughties here on TORn... never know when you guys will turn about

... to cast my vote for Sir Bard? Thanks Kel, didn't see that thread before, I was rather overwhelmed by all the casting suggestions and I've been waiting for the official ones for a long time now. SirD looks so Bardy in that pic *psst* I sent you a lil' giftie on FB (why are my sentences weirdly rhyming? )

First you need to correct the spelling of Nicol Williamson's name under Smaug... And he would be an excellent choice. Please add to yoru list for Bilbo my vote for Paul Giamatti...

I am not a moderator of the message boards and don't have "mod power" so I can change the front page news list but I can't change the one on the message boards. Mods will need to discuss and determine if this particular list gets updated and if so, who will do the job. My ten minute window to edit is closed.

I didn't check footers and must have missed him elsewhere. He is added to the front-page story, I am helpless to add him to the discussion on the message boards.

OF COURSE! We should have thought of this before... There is only ONE, yes ONE possibility... And this explains his not taking the director's chair: PETER JACKSON, himself!!! Who else??
Timothy Fisher alias "Timdalf" "... The Word of God Himself, He, indeed, assumed humanity that we might become as God..." St. Athanasius of Alexandria "On the Incarnation" The fear of the end is the source of all lovelessness. Richard Wagner's Letters Saruman: Can we not have peace, you and I? King Theoden: We shall have peace. (pause) When you answer for the burning of the Westfold. And the children that lie dead there. We shall have peace when the lives of the soldiers whose bodies were hewn even as they lay dead against the Hornburg are avenged. When you hang from a gibbet for the sport of your own crows, we shall have peace. Tolkien - "The Return of the King" Frodo: It is a pity Bilbo did not kill Gollum when he had the chance. Gandalf: Pity? It was pity that stayed Bilbo's hand. Many that live deserve death, and some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them, Frodo? (Frodo frowns.) Do not be so eager to deal out death in judgment, even the very wise cannot see all ends. Frodo: I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened. Gandalf: So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All we have to do is decide what to do with the time that is given us. There are other forces at work in the world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Tolkien - "The Fellowship of the Ring"

The only addition I would make would be for Donald Sutherland as Smaug. He did an orange juice commercial and after I heard it i had an uncontrollable compulsion to drink OJ. Oh yeah, and Martin Freeman as Bilbo is win.

I think James Cosmo should be added for Thorin or Balin and Julian Sands added for Thranduil; but aside from that its a pretty comprehensive list at this stage.

MrCere, I hope this thread NEVER gets deleted--it should have a permanent sticky until filming begins--and then it should go into the storied TORN vaults, never to be forgotten! There will be in ages to come, times when oft we may feel the desire to revisit this list, and muse upon the horrors of What Could Have Been. Was there a similar compilation list thread for LOTR before the cast was revealed? SirDennisC--can't stop laughing!!!!

that until he was officially rejected for the role, there were more than a few fans who wanted Doug Jones to be Thranduil, and speculated about this for months. And not just on TORN.

****************************************** The audacious proposal stirred his heart. And the stirring became a song, and it mingled with the songs of Gil-galad and Celebrian, and with those of Feanor and Fingon. The song-weaving created a larger song, and then another, until suddenly it was as if a long forgotten memory woke and for one breathtaking moment the Music of the Ainur revealed itself in all glory. He opened his lips to sing and share this song. Then he realized that the others would not understand. Not even Mithrandir given his current state of mind. So he smiled and simply said "A diversion.”

Bob Hoskins (Who Framed Roger Rabbit); and Bill (William) Nighy. He played Davy Jones in the PotC films. He also played Sam in the BBC Radio adaptation with Ian Holm's Frodo. What a perfect round-about that would be :)
