Children of Húrin Discussion?
|
Can't Post
|
|
Back when we were doing the sign-up for the artists discussion, we discussed following that up with a discussion of the "new" Children of Húrin which comes out on Tuesday. I don't think we had an official voting thread on it, so maybe this could be a thread to sound out ideas about our next discussion (if we want to do Húrin or some other book or topic). Right now we go through May 14, the last of the open discussion weeks on artists. Thoughts on what we might do next?

CoH sounds perfect as our next discussion

....Well, as perfect as it can be considering I'm still coming to terms with the fact that Turin's story is my least favorite of Tolkien's tales. Still, we simply *must* discuss the most recent release of Tolkien's works, and the timing corresponds perfectly with the end of the current - giving people enough time to start (and for many to finish) it by mid-May.

I'd like to start contributing again to the RR and as I love this story would love to contribute, so despite my long absence am pitching in a thought ... is mid-May long enough for everyone to a) get their sticky paws on CoH, and b) finish it? I know if I can find a copy I'll have it finished, 'cos I read fast, but perhaps we ought to leave it a little longer?

**How about starting it in June?**

That would give people time to get the book, and to get ahead in the reading (since many like to have it under their belts before Chapter 1 discussion begins!). I volunteered with Altaira to help coordinate it as N.E. Brigand did with the artists discussion since she has a lot on her plate. I think we'd all like to find a balance so that those who are brand new or fairly new to the story would be happy along with those who are familiar with all the different incarnations of the Turin account, a mix of the scholarly with those who see it as a good read. This would be a great chance to draw some people into the RR, some for the first time, so we could see how the new furniture squire bought holds up. Here's a proposal, and if we might want to adjust the timing, that's fine with me. There could be a sign-up thread towards the beginning of May and we'd start in June. I'll glance at the number of chapters and appendices, etc., once I get it in hand, and from there we can make an estimate about how long it will take what it'll entail. I know Túrin's story is not exactly up with people people material, and there are no hobbits (though we did have a post series a while ago about a "hobbit-like" character Tolkien considered introducing--N.E. could maybe supply the link). But it's a new Tolkien book, AND we can extend our illustration discussion by looking at the Alan Lee images as we go through the text!

Thanks for taking this on. I look forward to participating on whatever schedule is arranged by Altaira and yourself. As you noted, Tolkien did consider one way to overcome the absence of reader-friendly Hobbit characters in the "Silmarillion", but his peculiar and undeveloped solution was to use the Drúedain (Woses) for this purpose. Túrin's childhood friend, the lame servant Sador Labadal, was to have become a Drúg named Sadog: see this excellent post by squire from October. Given that Tolkien apparently never did more than note his intentions for this character --he never wrote any scenes with Sadog-- it is unlikely that he appears in The Children of Húrin.

My exams don't end until May 10th- keeping a copy of that book nearby could be hazardous to my grade point average! Mine is on super saver shipping from Amazon so maybe it will take long enough to let me finish my academic studies first! Cheers to having a discussion in June! I hope I can join in, but I might not be around!

And had a flick through and I totally second his comments about it being incredibly well-designed. There are picture plates, a large, well-spaced typeface (not always the case with other Tokien books), and pictures heading and finishing the chapters. It does look like the sort of book that is a pleasure to read, rather than just page after page of uninterrupted text which, although it is what a book is, the addition of some design can make an unbelievable difference.

There's a short review of the book over on the Endicott Studio blog, which in turn links to a review on Salon.com: http://endicottstudio.typepad.com/...back_to_middle_.html I spotted this bit of trivia at the bottom of the review: "Endicott contributor Howard Gayton posed for the hero in the book's cover painting by Alan Lee. You can read Howard's article on fairy tale theater here, and see more art by Alan here and here. To view a "video trailer" about the new Tolkien book, visit the Harper Collins UK website." Can't wait to get a copy of the book. Sounds great, and I've always loved Lee's art.

I was very surprised to see the new book at the Library last week! I 'm reading it right now. I feel Im actually reading a Tolkien book for the first time since LOTHR,although I agree with some-would like to have seen Beren and Luthien,or The Fall of Gondonlin first! Still, its good, and I dont care what that book review says!
