Bilbo's Brainteasers! (answers & scores) [In reply to] Can't Post

Hello all! Well, Bilbo and I have managed to catch up to answering exactly.... 1 ...... of the quizzes we're backed up on. Blush The others will come along shortly, (or longly). Wink

Nevertheless, a pat on the back and a “well done!” is in order for all who braved last week’s ‘foolish’ brainteaser. We had many perfect scores, and everyone else did very well, so no fools here.

Have a great week, everyone!!

Questions

1. Neither age, nor an enormous dinner clouded the wits of old Rory Brandybuck who guessed that “silly old fool” mad _________ was off on an adventure again. (1 word, 3rd letter)

2. “Comfort me not with wizards! The fool’s hope has failed. The Enemy has found it, and now his power waxes; he sees our very thoughts and all we do is ruinous. Who is speaking? (3rd letter)

3. “Old fool! Old fool! Do you not know Death when you see it?” Who is speaking? (2 words, 2nd letter). I

4. Fool! Obstinate fool! Running willfully into death and ruining our cause. Who is speaking? (3rd letter)

5. Ass! Fool! Thrice worthy and beloved! Gandalf is talking about the owner of this Inn. (2 words, 1st letter)

6. “Radagast the brown! Radagast the bird-tamer! Radagast the Simple! Radagast the Fool!” Who spoke these words? (1 word, 1st letter)

7. “Hinder me? Thou fool. No living man may hinder me!” Who is being spoken to? (4th letter)

8. Fool of a Took! This is a serious journey, not a hobbit walking-party. Throw yourself in next time, and then you will be no further nuisance. Who is being spoken to? (1 word, 3rd & 4th letters)

9. Gimli: “You speak like a fool. Do you think those halls are fair, where your King Dwells… they are but hovels compared with the caverns I have seen here.” To whom is Gimli speaking? (1 word, 6th letter)

10. “Take it off! Take it off! Fool! Take it off!” Where was Frodo when he ‘heard’ these words? (2 words, 5th letter)
Final Clue: By taking the letters indicated from each clue, in order from clue 1-10, you’ll have a greeting that fits this weekend (for certain TORNsibs, that is). Hint: it’s *not* a word jumble, but you could read it better with the help of Galadriel’s mirror. (Still stumped? Read the final clue backwards)

*finishes munching and swallowing purple Peeps bunny* Um, that was supposed to be "not so bad"!

1. Dernhelm, Éowyn: pseudonym and actual name of future ruling Lady of Ithilien.

2. Elfstone, Elessar: two names for a green stone, said to have healing properties. Also name given to some guy who acquired it.

3. Barad-dur, Minas Morgul: towered places where some really bad dudes hang out.

4. Sharkey, Saruman: nickname and actual name of a fallen Istari.

5. Snowmane, Windfola: steeds of Rohan.

6. Kingsfoil, Athelas: different names for a plant used in Elvish-style healing

7. Jolly, Tom: Cotton siblings, brothers of Rosie.

8. Carchost, Narchost: individual names for the Towers of the Teeth.

9. Orodruin, Mt. Doom: active volcano in Mordor. Very dangerous. Especially if wearing jewelry near the lava vents.

10. Landroval, Gwaihir: great Eagles, of the kind capable of carrying a full-grown wizard. Or a Dwarf with a Hobbit hanging on. Wink

Thank you, Altaira & Bilbo, and watch out for those "sugar hangovers"! Laugh

Greetings all, welcome to another round of Bilbo’s Brainteasers. If you’re like Bilbo and I, you’re brain is a little fuzzy having overdosed on chocolate eggs and chocolate bunnies this weekend, so kudos to those who are brave enough to tease those clouds out of your brain with a quiz!

This week’s quiz is a ‘Common things” quiz. Each pair of words below has something in common. Fill in the blanks to complete each word, then tell what each pair of words has in common. (3 points per question – closed book! And, don’t forget to tell what each thing has in common!)

Questions

1.
D e r n h e l m

E o w y n
They are one-and-the-same! Dernhelm is the name Eowyn used when she disguised herself to ride to war with the Rohirrim.

2.
E lf s t o n e

E le ss a r

Both names are associated with Aragorn.

3.
B ar a d - du r

M i na s Mo r gul

These are both fortresses of the Dark Lord.
4.
S ha r k ey

S ar u m an

Once again, they are one-and-the-same. (Sharkey probably evolved from the orc word Sharku.) 5.
Snow m an e ??? (It was a letter over, but I made an executive decision because I was really stuck!)

Win d f ol a
Both are horses.

6.
K _ n _ _ f _ _

_ t _ e l _ _

7.
J o l l y

T o m
Good old Tom Bombadil was a jolly fellow, I guess! He certainly sang that way.

8.
C _ r _ _ o s _

N _ r _ _ o s _

9.
O r o dr u i n

M t Doo m
Both names for the Mountain of Fire and the Cracks of Doom.

10.
_ a _ d _ _ v _ l

G _ _ i _ i _

(Formerly Lossefalme3, just in case you're wondering)*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Aragorn threw back his cloak. The elven-sheath glittered as he grasped it, and the bright blade of Andúril shone like a sudden flame as he swept it out. 'Elendil!' he cried. 'I am Aragorn son of Arathorn, and am called Elessar, the Elfstone, Dúnadan, the heir of Isildur Elendil's son of Gondor. Here is the Sword that was Broken and is forged again! Will you aid me or thwart me? Choose swiftly!' TTT, Book III, Chapter 2
And Éomer answered: 'Since the day when you rose before me out of the green grass of the downs I have loved you, and that love shall not fail.' RotK, Book VI, Chapter 5

Wowzers [In reply to] Can't Post

What a fun one! I msut confess I don't know many of the answers, but it's Spring Break so I'll answer any way. (I just dread the thought of seeing my score posted with everyone else's!)

1. Dernhelm
Eowyn

Same person, or so I'm told.

2. Elfstone
Evenstar

The Elvish name of the King and Queen

3. Barad-Dur
Minas Morgul

Places where the baddies live.

4. Last minute save, it just came to me!
Sharkey
Saurman

Same, bad dude.

5. Snowmane (am I off here?)
Windfola

Horse names.

6. KNoFck knock?
who's there?
TELl me the answer, please?
(I keep thinking Knife in the dark and Ettelwyn.)

7. Jolly
Dom
The "Merry" actor. sigh. sorry.
(or Tom was a jolly fellow?)

8. Carchost and Narchost?
(I keep trying to say Cair Andros.)

9. Orodruin
Mt.Doom

Guess they are the same place but I can't think of Orodruin as a bad place because I confuse it with Oklahoma, darn it.

10. Advil
Gimme Ibuprofen

After a quiz like this one we all need some relief. Wink hee hee.

It was a lot of fun. Thanks so much Altaira and Bilbo! You guys rock!
