Did You Ever Notice... Galadriel's 'Under a Spell' Costume?
|
Can't Post

Just a quick post this week. We talked about Galadriel's Mirror Gown a long while ago. She pulls a quick change for this scene, even though the costume is almost entirely hidden by special effects. There's not a lot here to talk about, actually. The dress is mostly tatters of blue-green fabric. They use the same beaded fabric as her mirror gown for the top-most layer. Over this is an armor breastplate of grey, presumably meant to be metal but likely made of fiberglass. The breastplate has a fishscale design to it. This is one costume that was never meant to be seen from all angles since the breastplate doesn't come all the way around her torso.
This post is really a thinly veiled vessel to display my favorite detail. The brooch she wears with the mirror gown grows as her power grows! I believe you can figure out which is which, but on the top is her mirror gown brooch and below that is her bespelled costume.
You can find a few more images over at AlleyCatScratch and larger versions of everything I've posted on ReeratheRed's Screencap Library. So, any thoughts? Did You Ever Notice? is a running look at some of the costumes in LOTR. It is a wandering discussion that appears on no particular day and follows absolutely no order. You can always find links to the old discussions at my Costume Discussion Archive.

I'm not thrilled about the tatters.

I presume they're there to help with the floaty aspects of the material, giving the gown more movement when Galadriel is showing what she could become - but it's too Nazgul-like for an Elf queen for my tastes. I hadn't noticed the brooch before - good spotting! I do wonder if the downward point of the breastplate makes sitting down interesting.
Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..." Dwarves: "Pretty rings..." Men: "Pretty rings..." Sauron: "Mine's better." "Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded b*****d with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak. That costume looks quite ragged. Not the elegance I'd expect from the Lady Galadriel *grin* But it fits with the image of her as the next dark lord/lady, I guess - no need for fripperies then. The orcs certainly wouldn't appreciate it. I'm amazed about that detail with the brooch - would anyone in the movie itself notice it at all? Without a close-up picture like you posted? Once again, it's unbelievable to what lengths they went with the costumes. Ataahua's comment about sitting down with the breastplate made me snicker. She's right - and I'd move a bit careful with that thing on, anyway! Thanks, Arwen's daughter!
I do not suffer from LotR obsession - I enjoy every minute of it.

I`m glad you brought that up because I wasn`t entirely sure if I was seeing a different costume in the movie. I was right. Never liked this scene. It was so unsubtle. It`s very powerful in the book but it was such cartoonish villany in the movie, about as bad as Sauron`s lighthouse eye. I adore FOTR but Nuclear Boo Galadriel scene is where I cringe.

I know what you mean, I was just thinking along the lines of that myself. I think the tatters (I just wrote "taters") are ok for when she's being all scary/floaty/evil with nice special effects, but as far as an actual costume goes, I don't think they would really work-- too Nazgul-like, what you said, which also kind of means not too original, and definitely not very Galadriel-like (even if we're talking about evil-Galadriel).

I didn't originally have a problem with this scene. Actually I thought it rather good. But then I read the book, and I found it kind of comical. I'm not big on the tatters. Like others have pointed out, it looks way to Ringwraith-like, and not very elf-like, even if it is a Dark-Evil-Queen elf look. To be honest, when I look at it in the pictures, it looks like they just took a bunch of dirty old grey-ish rags, sewed them together and drapped them all over her. Not very elf-like at all. I do love the brooch though. But I never noticed that it "grew". And I probably never would have if you hadn't posted the pic, so thanks for pointing that out!

In fact, my next costume post was going to be the twilight ringwraith costumes. Their costumes share a lot of the same properties, I think. I refuse to believe that it was coincidental, so I have to wonder why PJ and the design team chose to link the two. _______________________ Ok, here goes: maybe when a person becomes a wraith, they remain wearing the same clothing that they were wearing at the time they became a wraith. In other words, no wardrobe changes allowed, in wraithworld . So the Kings were wearing their regal robes when they eventually became wraiths (who knows if it happens all at once or slowly), and after thousands of years, those clothes were still on them, but all shredded and ripped with thousands of years of wear and tear. Maybe metal, like crowns and breastplates, survive intact in wraithworld, but fabric does not. Whaddya think ... do I get an A for effort, huh huh ??

"Maybe giving you the Ring is not such a good idea after all ..."

Movie firster .... I remember being very confused by this scene. Because first Frodo says, "I will give you the Ring" ... at which point she transforms into this raging maniac ... which I took to mean, that this was supposed to be her true character, this was who she really was inside, not the nice tall lady in the white dress ... and then all of a sudden she calms back down and looks normal, and we cut back to Frodo, who now has this look on his face that I swear I thought he was going to say, "Um, ok, maybe not such a good idea, to give you the Ring..." So yep I was much too befuddled to notice the costume ... it took me a while and a few readings to even figure out what was going on here .

Maybe they were going with the idea that the Ring "consumes" you -- starting with your clothes!

Although technically then I guess you'd need two ... uh, taters .
