Has anyone read the Silmarillion all in one sitting? Can't Post

Has anyone read the Silmarillion-for the first time-all in one sitting? Understanding it fully? I'm curious; so far I have only had to re-read a paragraph for understanding; I'm guessing only some form of elite scholar could do that all in one sitting, understanding it fully, then get up an hour later saying "Hmm. Good booK." and shuffle away. [Please forgive the spelling; the lowercase "K" isn't worKing!]

Not I [In reply to] Can't Post

I consider myself a fast reader but things like The Sil get me bogged down. It can be hard for me to read more than a chapter or two of Sil in one sitting.

I certainly didn't! [In reply to] Can't Post

The first time I slogged through it, I don't think I understood much. The second time, though, I enjoyed it! -- and each time since.

Absolutely not [In reply to] Can't Post

I even had to push my self to get through the first few chapters. Later on when I came along more names that I knew, it became more fun to read.
And understanding it, absolutely not. After a few times reading there are still some things I discover that I hadn't understood before.

Oh boy... [In reply to] Can't Post

Considering how young I was when I first read it, not by a long shot! I took it in small doses and understood little.

It wasn't until my third reading a couple years later that I finally understood that if you read it like a bunch of small stories entertwined together by a few common threads that it makes it much easier to understand XD I still have a soft spot for the tale of Beren and Luthien.

It's not unlike reading the Old Testament... [In reply to] Can't Post

...I don't think anyone is expected to read it all in one sitting. Do you mean did they understand it all the first time through? I don't think you have to. It's something about which you would gain various new facets of understanding once you've read other parts of the Histories and the legendarium anyway, as well as what's new that you'd naturally pick up on as your perspective evolves with time.

I can't even manage to get through the whole thing in one reading.. I always end up leaving it and coming back to it again and again, and starting over...

I couldn't possibly read it all in one sitting. A few days yes. But I love to go to the maps and lineage pages s I am reading as the plces and names still confuse me and I've read it probably 10 times maybe more. Not as smart as all the rest on here.Laugh
