My writing (including The Passing of Mistress Rose)

Do we find happiness so often that we should turn it off the box when it happens to sit there?

I've always thought he did [In reply to] Can't Post

take Shadowfax with him from this one line

Quote
Then Círdan led them to the Havens, and there was a white ship lying, and upon the quay beside a great grey horse stood a figure robed all in white awaiting them.

and because Gandalf's love of the horse as he asked Theoden to give him Shadowfax. I think after all that Gandalf sacrificed and all the centuries of toil... for them to not be parted from each other wasn't that much to ask. :)

Another useful (detailed!) summary of The History of Middle-earth [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm coming to this thread a bit late, but I don't think anybody has posted this link yet. At Mellonath Daeron (the language guild of Forodrim, the Swedish Tolkien Society), you can find a great summary, volume by volume, of everything in The History of Middle-earth. It also includes the appoximate dates when each included piece was written. I've found it a useful reference.

We're discussing The Lord of the Rings in the Reading Room, Oct. 15, 2007 - Mar. 22, 2009!

Join us Oct. 27-Nov. 2 for "The Last Debate".

****************************************
And we're discussing Tolkien's classic essay, "On Fairy-stories", Oct. 20-Nov. 30. This week:

"Max Müller’s view of mythology as a ‘disease of language’ can be abandoned without regret. Mythology is not a disease at all, though it may like all human things become diseased. You might as well say that thinking is a disease of the mind."
