I'm coming to this thread a bit late, but I don't think anybody has posted this link yet. At Mellonath Daeron (the language guild of Forodrim, the Swedish Tolkien Society), you can find a great summary, volume by volume, of everything in The History of Middle-earth. It also includes the appoximate dates when each included piece was written. I've found it a useful reference.
