I'm curious: where's Curious? And some other regulars, too? Can't Post

can they "view" the posts here without signing in as members? Maybe they are having trouble getting approved? maybe if they can read this, they will see the hint to turn off their email spamblocker program, as the email verification might get lost in it.

Maybe I should post this in the old RR, just in case?

anyone heard from anyone having trouble signing on?

Well, it is Sunday [In reply to] Can't Post

At least here in the U.S. The RR is usually pretty quiet on the weekend. Some of the missing regulars may show up tomorrow.

The Lost. [In reply to] Can't Post

Obviously it's dangerous to speculate, as between the time I began this reply and now, Curious has appeared (and at least one other person has registered). But without rechecking the list, and guessing that some of the following people have signed up under different names, these are the missing, based only on scanning the past six months of RR posts and the past three weeks of Movie posts:

AJ, Alassëa Eruvande, AltarielofLothlorien, annechen, Arquen, Atlas, Barahli of Rohan, beren boy, bigidiot, Calenial, Çarcharoth, Cirdan the Shipwright, Daeorn Aldalómë, dna, Draug the Unspeakably Violent, dungolfin, Ecthel, Elf Maven, Elostirion74, Elvenesque, FarFromHome, Finrod Felagund 5, Fionnan, GreenHeart, HobbitLoveR*M-e, hotwaternobility, Liath, majorpopinjay, Modtheow, NZ Strider, Orald, Owlyross, Paige, septembrist, Silent Lion, Smokering, Stanislaus Bocian, stormcrow20, 13th Warrior, Timbo mbadil, White Gull, wildmaiden.

These are all the "regular" names I saw. Some of them are certainly aware of the new boards and simply haven't had time to post --FFH indicated she would be away for several days, for example-- and others appear infrequently, and might simply discover the change the next time they swing by TORN. Still, it might be worthwhile for you to post a warning about spam blockers in the Reading Room.

And the boards are public and can be viewed by non-registering lurkers.

There will be a little flood of new members come Monday (we get a lot of people who post mainly at work). Some of the lost will just wander in, and not all who.... you know the rest!

Mitch Miller? Stan Freberg? [In reply to] Can't Post

Even with the holiday, about 30 people have joined since I posted that list yesterday, including several people named there, as well as some Main/Movie regulars I had not listed and some lurkers / newbies. It's really neat to actually see a list of members after years of not being able to open the directory on the old boards.

My subject line refers to your footer, with Texas seceding. Have you ever heard Stan Freberg's parody of Mitch Miller's "The Yellow Rose of Texas"?

No. Is it funny? [In reply to] Can't Post

My dad had a collection of Mitch Miller "sing along" records, and they were a hoot, at least to my childhood sense of humor.

I recall seeing at least one SF alternate history novel based on the premise that Texas secedes and becomes its own republic. I'm sure there are some people here who would think that a great idea.

I wasn't sure this merited a new thread, but I just came across a blog post by Horace Jeffery Hodges, the Gypsy Scholar, on the use of the word "drinking" for "smoking" in some cultures, including an Old English (pre-tobacco) quote. Worth a look.
