Well it appears that Mr. Baggins & Co. is in good hands.
 Ambrose Heron of FILMdetail.com recently spoke with Guillermo del Toro about Hellboy II and they also discussed some interesting tidbits about the writing of the 'Hobbit' script:
I seem to have a never ending mine of reading material. I started by reading everything I could get my hands on that Tolkien wrote of Middle-earth. And then I started reading as many books as I can about Tolkien writing about Middle-earth. I want to get as familiar with the cosmology and the genealogy and the geography of that place as possible. Because for many, myself included, it has to become a real place again.
I'm very much knee deep in that - I'm knee deep in writing and throwing the long lines of the stories along with Peter, Fran and Philippa. You know the four of us are doing 'The Beatles; and we are co-writing the screenplays. I must say its going great - we are having a blast! And I'm discovering aspects of Tolkien's world and Middle-earth that I find fascinating and in some instances even heart-breaking and moving - in the way that they reflect, voluntarily or not, the episode of his generation. Going through WWI and the world of trenches and the abandonment and corruption of honor by greed and by brutality. This is really illuminating in how the Hobbit progresses dramatically - a tale of a Golden Age in the Shire. To a darker place at the end of the book.

that GDT is reading everthing Tolkien and enjoying it too. You have to be a fan of the books to be able to put your heart and soul into making it and get amazing results.
Why does 2011 have to be so far away?!!! I can't wait!

As if you wouldn't in that company. I think Peter and Fran are geniuses at picking out the right people for the right job. The comradely I saw in the EE versions was very evident, with each hammering out the script in their on way. Fran on the floor with her bits of handwritten paper. Philippa at the typewriter. Peter on the couch. So I wonder where Guillermo is?

I too am "pleased & relieved" that del Toro is taking this seriously, so much so as to read "everything" he can get his hands on that was written by Tolkien & others on Middle-earth. Very encouraging news indeed.

The faithful servant, the one who kept the Ring-bearer going, who "saw the job through" to the very end regardless of the personal grief. He was also instrumental in coming up with many of the great word plays associated with the Beatles, like "a hard day's night".

Oh Boy!!
This approach, this investment of diving into Middle-earth and coming back from Tolkiens world with such insight, strengthens my confidence that the Hobbit and F2 will be more than a movie, it will be an extraordinary experience captured on film. I suspect that the writing teams input and Guillermo's direction will change as the filming begins, as it did with the trilogy - and I hope there are some spontaneous interventios taken up along the way - but Im sure the structure being laid down now will build a mighty stories and make 2 mighty films. Im thrilled to pieces ... I loved the Beatles comparison - but visually, I'm getting more like 'ABBA' for that one  Cheers Elven x

most identifying himself with the dwarves, that they will have a snappy repartee and sarcastic wit about themselves. I also think the dialog between the grumpy dwarves, and the somewhat silly elves is going to explosive.

I am so glad he's reading *everything*. I have to say it, there's stuff he's reading that I know I haven't read. (The last 3 books of HoME, Leaf by Niggle, etc.) I suppose I'd better set aside some time in future to get to the rest of the stuff I haven't finished....I LOVE the whole thought of him discovering this stuff for the first time, I'm glad he's falling in love with all the ancillary stuff, so it isn't just on-the-job-training, so to speak....if you become totally immersed in the world to the extent of being immersed in the sources and legacy as well....it says that the passion for the project, which is just as important as the skill in this case, if not more, will be there. It's great to know that he probably does really rue that infamous Cannes comment now:)

The discovery of middle the bounds of Middle Earth is a great joy. (Good beer ain't bad either!) I am sure they will have fun despite the pressure the fans and studio suites put on them. I hope GdT gets to spend a few nights in Bag End (in Peter's back yard) I can see him working at Bilbo's desk. What ya think.

To know that he is reading all the works himself, immersing himself not just in the prior films, but in the entire contintence of source material. I have seen Jackson's take, appreciating its moments of vision, and deploring its moments of shortcoming. Now I am ready to see a different version, one that marries itself to what Jackson did, but one that is not beholden to it or an immitation thereof. The only way for Del Toro to stamp it effectively in a positive way, is for him to familarize himself with the essentials and proceed from that place of strength and earnest truth. Now to see what comes.

Just got back from seeing "HELLBOY 2" at the Embassy in downtown Wellington - what a droolingly-gorgeous film!!! If this is the type of artistic talent that we can expect, I'm so excited! First off, all the special effects reminded me of the "good old days" of the first 3 Star Wars films (Star Wars, Empire, & Jedi) when it was obvious that the craftspeople were not only proficient at their tasks, but they were having fun too! Sure movies need to make money, but if a Director and his crew isn't having fun, the audience won't either. "The Golden Army" was literally dripping with beautiful detail. I would've given my left arm (because I use my right) to work with this highly-talented crew of artists!
I have a few things that I would like to advise the TORn group et al:
1.) If you haven't yet, go see "Hellboy 2" in a GOOD theater near you. What I mean by "good" is a theater with a decent sound system, because you will want to hear everything from the little nuances to the gigantic blasts that make the theater rumble you can feel it in your fanny!
2.) If there are still people out there that have concerns about GDT's involvement with "The Hobbit" after seeing "Hellboy 2", come see me and I'll personally flog you.
3.) Directed to the good Director: will there be any Sideshow Weta sculptures made for "Hellboy 2"? I have a list of characters, items, and scenes to run past you, if you're interested...
