Lost Anthology?

Was wondering if someone here could help me with something that came up in conversation today: I seem to remember hearing or reading somewhere that back in the mid 1970's, before the Silmarillion was published, HM or Ballantine compiled an anthology of stories based in Middle Earth with all the major fantasy authors of the era contributing - I believe Ursula LeGuin was among them, and that the book was either never published, or suppressed by the Tolkien Estate. Is there any truth in this? Or is it just a meme I contracted somewhere...? I'm not confusing this with the "After The King" anthology, that I'm sure of. Any help would be appreciated!

I don't know about any other story anthologies but there is a collection of essays called "Meditations on Middle Earth" that was published a few years ago. A lot of well known fantasy writers contributed their thoughts on Tolkien and his influence on their writing. The other one is the original "A Tolkien Compass" edited by Jared Lobdell. It contains Tolkien's then unpublished LOTR Nomenclature. Reprints of the Compass do not have this included per the Estate's request.

As you note, Tolkien's aide for translators appears in the first (1975) but not the second edition (2004) of A Tolkien Compass, edited by Jared Lobdell. However, it has been republished, in slightly expanded form, as "Nomenclature of The Lord of the Rings" in Wayne Hammond and Christina Scull's The Lord of the Rings: A Reader's Companion (2005).
