Did You Ever Notice... Boromir's Costume? Can't Post

This is a princely outfit! I know that there is no way for me to show all of the details in this costume! You can see the full version of the first picture HERE.

The first layer is a black shirt with chainmaille half-sleeves. Under that he wears sometimes a silver embroidered gambeson (likely only when his vambraces are off) and velvet pants.

Over this he wears a red silk tunic. It's heavy with bullion embroidery on the sleeves and neck. This is made by stitching down little coils of metal wire. The tunic buttons up the front and is split front and back for riding. The color is terrible in this first picture, but it's the most revealing.

Over this he wears a long black leather surcoat. It has gold detailing along the edges and silver clasps.

The clasps bear the White Tree. The smaller clasps to either side look like Minas Tirith to me. Anyone else?

On top of all of that he wears his embossed velvet and fur edged cloak, a tooled leather belt, his sword, shield, and vambraces.

I've run out of room in this post. If you'd like to see more, I recommend popping over to AlleyCatScratch for more details.

So, any thoughts?

All of the costumes were impressive... [In reply to] Can't Post

but this one was one of the most impressive.

I love the burgundy embroidered tunic, which is, at first glance, what I most notice about his costume. The horn really completes it, it's just that final touch of attention to detail--he wouldn't have been Boromir without it. I wonder how much the whole thing weighs...??? The wearer has to be in great physical condition to sport this outfit...( *fans self *)

This is one outfit I did 'notice'. Not that I paid loads of attention to it but I always noticed it when watching FOTR.

Re: the fasteners
I just did a little avatar for a new theme and I used the image of map image of Minas Tirith that dissolves in from the actual MT after the coronation.
I do think those fasteners look like that.

Princely indeed! [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm once again amazed at the amount of work and details Ngila and her team put into the costumes. The gold edges, for instance, and the whole embroidery even in places where they are barely recognisable. This costume is worthy for the heir to the Steward of Gondor.

That was one of the costumes I got to see in the Exhibit - they had the Boromir dummy lying in the boat. Complete with dirt under the soles of his boots. It was such a pity that we weren't allowed to take photos!

You do such a great work in drawing our eyes to all these little details that are so easily overlooked in the movie! Thank you so much!

Well, Gimli's costume was probably even heavier with all the axes - I could never understand how JRD (or his double) was able to run with it!

I loved the burgundy and gold too. He looked so grand - same here I noticed his outfit too in the film - more than the other characters.

They do look like Minas Tirith! Or at least like they could be based on it. Now I really wonder if it was intentional.

All the costumes were spectacular [In reply to] Can't Post

But I loved the detail on Boromir's, especially the tunic and the embroidery on it. I can just picture people bent over the stuff, working busily away.

The level of detail is breathtaking, and it all comes together so well.

Of course, it does help that the outfit is draped on a rather dishy looking clothes-horse Tongue

Beautiful, and rugged too [In reply to] Can't Post

Embroidery and mail, what a combination!

I wonder if any of the guys got to keep any of their costumes, the way Liv Tyler was given one of her gowns. I bet that leather surcoat might actually be wearable!

And I'm not sure if it's all the layers, but it also really adds to the effect of Boromir being so much physically larger than the Hobbits. In their scenes together he always appeared to me to be much larger than the other Men or Elves looked in their scenes with the Hobbits.

Always love these photos and details, Arwen's daughter, thanks so much!

Is it hot in here?

Seriously, this is one of my favorite costumes in the whole trilogy. So much detail. One thing I really appreciated about these films was the fact that everyone wore layers of clothing. It helped to add to the feeling of realism. One shouild not embark on a dangerous excursion wearing next to nothing (Conan, I'm looking at you...)

Brace yerselves Wink

I really love this costume. The first photo brings to mind that wonderful slow-mo of Boromir running to the aid of Merry and Pippin in FOTR- one of my favourite moments. I always notice the movement of the clothing as he runs.

As an aside, I'm somewhat fascinated by the woman with the beanie behind Sean Bean in the next photo - captions, anyone? And what's the orange thing on the ground by his footsies, precious? Is it his hairdryer? And why is his hand bandaged in that other pic?

Fancy! [In reply to] Can't Post

Don't he just look like a true little captain of Gondor?

Yeah, I liked this costume a lot. The cloak thing looks really warm as well as gorgeous, and the red color for his tunic works perfectly with the black of the surcoat. One of the things I enjoyed about this costume was that it showed Boromir's royalty, but wasn't so gaudy that he looked ridiculous. It shows that he is really a warrior (If a well-dressed one.)

That was probably handy for ol' Bean when he was climbing half a mile up a mountain to avoid flying in the helicopter...wow, those guys at the ski lift must have been QUITE weirded out...

Looking around Elrond's library...chucking stones in the waterfalls...singing tra-la-la with the elves....yup, life's good in Rivendell.

Orange thingie: I wonder if it's a mark. You know, "A piece of tape on the floor that indicates where an actor should stand."

bandage: I was curious, as well. Can we identify that statue? Is it from Amon Hen? I don't remember anything about this in the commentaries but if we had a scene, we could narrow it down for a re-listen.

Velvet pants??? [In reply to] Can't Post

Well, at least this Boromir wears pants, contrary to his Bakshi counterpart!

What really impresses me with this costume is its intricacies, and the combination of materials and techniques that go into it.

A complicated outfit for a complicated character. Well done, Ngila and crew!

And thanks for the close up look at it, Arwen's Daughter!

Bandage [In reply to] Can't Post

Here's the full pic of Boromir and Aragorn. I had to do a little cropping to keep my post within the total size limit:

Based on Aragorn's costume and what we have of the background, I would guess this is Lorien. I also don't remember hearing anything about his hand, but now I have an excuse to go back through the commentaries Cool He has a bandage over his glove in that first picture, too. Was Boromir the character injured somewhere or is this Sean the actor?

So much detail [In reply to] Can't Post

I particulary love the first photo where he's standing like the Vetruvian man!Blush
Before I had watched all the making-of dvds I had really admired all their costumes. But after seeing how much time, thought, detail and effort went into designing and making the costumes it made me appreciate the costumes even more and the notice all the little details that finished off the outfit pefectly.

what's the use of wearing a bandage outside one's glove? [In reply to] Can't Post

regardless, that has to be intentional in terms of keeping it visible. I guess the thinking is it would have occurred in Moria.
