This just appeared in IESB.NET. Here it's the article. The link for the video interview appears below.
"Hobbit writer/director Guillermo del Toro says he will give his pal Doug Jones the hardest, most grueling part he can think of in his upcoming HOBBIT films.
The IESB spoke with both del Toro and Jones at the 34th Annual Saturn Awards on Tuesday. Jones was there to present two categories and del Toro was being honored with the George Pal Memorial Award.
The interview starts with Jones discussing HELLBOY II: THE GOLDEN ARMY and bringing Abe Sapien back to the big screen and several cameos he has coming up this year including QUARANTINE where he plays an ice cream man (a creepy one of course).
Del Toro shortly joined in the conversation and confirmed he will find a role for Jones in the HOBBIT films, so long as it's a really hard role with very long hours and jokes about Jones being a very tall Hobbit adn Guillermo being a very fat Hobbit.
Del Toro also talked about the future of Hellboy in Hellboy 3 and how to work that into his schedule with the two Hobbit films coming up."

that Doug Jones would be in the films... by comments made by his biographer(?) (known as HellMistress around here) on IMDb. Actually, she mentioned he would be in NZ in October in a post on this board.
He has made a career out of working in prosthetics. As such, he would be an obvious asset to the production, something he has proved to GDT on a few occasions.

What character could Doug Jones portray? He clearly can't be a dwarf, right? Unless he plays one of the Trolls or an elf, there's no other creature, unless of course they create one, which taking into consideration GDT's statements it's not very likely. What do you think? An orc maybe? Bolg? The Great Goblin?

...A troll?(: I know the ones in the LotR trilogy were CGI, but the Trolls in The Hobbit have much more of role and are more characterized, so they probably deserve more special attention.

Pleased Doug Jones is cast in The Hobbit is a good actor and also a judging by the interview a nice guy. I think he is going to do more one role though guys like he did multiple roles in Hellboy so can see him as possibly all these a Eagle, Spider, Elf, Troll.

... that seeing as Dougie played 1 character in HELLBOY, 2 in PAN'S LABYRINTH and 3 in HELLBOY II, that in about 10 years time Dougie will play every darned character in every film GdT makes - it would certainly be cheaper.
I'll be seeing Dougie and G this weekend, and I can assure you I'll be pulling their chains about this.
Doug will be in NZ in the autumn at a convention, so you never know - we may have some confirmation on casting.

I had no idea who Doug Jones was, so I looked him up. What's really embarrassing is that of the long list of movies, short films, TV shows, and commercials on his resume, I haven't seen a single one!
But, based on what I see, I'm figuring him for Beorn or Bard.

...maybe he will play all three trolls! That would be hard. He'd have to shoot every sequence and almost every angle in the scene up to three times. And with himself and other characters who may or may not be there. On top of acting in all the prosthetics. That would be REALLY hard. :)
One of the things that I've seen said about Doug is there is no one better at working expressively in any kind of prosthetic they care to stick him in.
I was thinking he could do the physical work for Beorn in his bear form as well. That might be similar to the faun contraption they had him in.

As per Doug Jones, besides trolls and bears and elves, could you see him made up as an ethereal vision of the Wild Hunt (the Hearn) in the white stag seen, or when they encounter soon after the distant sight of the Elves engaged in the Chase?

Speaking of stags, anyone have opinions about the wounding/killing of the stag? Would it be too traumatic for much of the audience? Should it be included in the film?
I'm a country kid, so based on a life-time of experiences I could handle the moment, and the visuals, okay. With death people find ways to cope -- perhaps because it is, after all, inevitable for every thing and every one. But the idea of causing pain and suffering, especially needlessly and when it could have been avoided, makes me sick to my stomach.
I'm not criticizing Tolkien for inserting that into the story, because I think it's a very effective device for illustrating one aspect of dwarven character - rashness. In fact, I think it shows strong character on Tolkien's part TO include it in a children's tale as it makes a good "life-lesson-stop" opportunity for adults while reading aloud. (He originally did read them aloud to his own children, which explains the style of narrative.)

Sorry for straying way OT there. It might have been a worthwhile subject for an altogether separate post. But it seemed like a natural stream-of-consciousness segue to me when the notion of the stag and the hunt came to my mind while brain-storming parts for DJ to play. ;)

I had never heard of him until last week, when I watched Pan's Labyrinth, and I've never seen anything else he's done in his enire career except, apparently, 1 episode each of "Party of Five" and "Jack Frost." (I must have seen him, since I saw every episode of both shows, though I have no idea what parts he played.) The kinds of movies and shows he's generally been in are not ones I would ever watch.

Not before watching the Pan's Labyrinth DVD extras last year, anyway. Obviously, you could tell that the Pale Man monster wasn't CGI, but I thought the Faun was, and I was astonished that not only was that a real man in the Pan suit, but that he actually spoke all of Pan's archaic Spanish dialogue as well. All dubbed over in the film, of course, but in one of the documentaries you can hear Doug speaking his Pan's lines, and he was great! Like Viggo with Elvish.
Intrigued, I went on the Net in search of more info on Doug, and it led to Del Toro's site, Del Toro Films, and the excellent Doug Jones website run by the lady we know around here as Hellmistress. No, I'm guessing she's NOT his biographer (LOL) but she would like to be no doubt! (The Doug Jones Experience", is linked to in her footer, of course.) Her site is a gold mine of Doug lore, it's probably the best fan site of his out there. And it's soon to be updated--as she said, she's meeting him this weekend. The Special Features of the Hellboy DVD have some more footage of Doug onset as well.
Doug seems to be a fan favorite not only for the coolness of his roles (to the younger film-going generation anyway; his older fans remember him for his TV roles and commercial spots) but for his personality as well. Apparently he is one of the absolutely nicest guys you'll ever meet. He loves hugging people, and signs almost all of his email with some variation on the phrase "THERE'S LOVE!" HM says that the only people he doesn't do this with are the Hollywood corporate types, of course--and he calls everybody "precious". I asked HM if he would ever dare to call Andy Serkis that, and she said "I'm sure he would!" HM says that Doug is a HUGE fan of Andy's and is "dying" to work with him.
BTW, let me brielfy state why I've been gone for so long. I've had a couple people mail me--geez, didn't know I was such a big deal around here. Watch out who you idolize--I'm nobody's idol, as some people know well   I've finally gotten started on my project of researching the world of Hellboy so as to decide whether or not I should go see the movie, not being a comic book fan. The answer is a resounding YES. I've been reading the material and watching the DVD this week, and not had time for the Net. IN addition to a crazy week and nights of sitting spellbound in front of a DVD player, I'm helping a friend putting the final touches on her wedding, which is on JUly 12, the day after the movie comes out. Grr! So I'll be seeing it Friday night the 11th, getting up early for my hairdresser's appt in the morning and then the wedding that afternoon! And all I'll have going through my mind is a certain scene with Abe Sapien that I can't spoil, but it'll be a real tearjerker.
I have decided to write an essay on my conversion to being a huge HB fan and thoughts on the upcoming film, b/c I have just gotten done reading the novelization of it and been blown away. It is SO MUCH more emotional and larger in scope than HB1. I actually tried to post the first draft of it on Wednesday but thnakfully it was lost....it was a bit poetic and embarassing. I am tweaking on it and (FYI, Altaira) shold have it up sometime next week. It;s still 2 weeks until the move comes out so maybe it;'ll be a better time to post it then.
