Sir Ian McK becomes Companion of Honour... Can't Post

From Metro:

Honour for McKellen

Wednesday, June 25, 2008

Sir Ian McKellen has been made a Companion of Honour for services to drama and equality.

The Order of the Companions of Honour consists of the Queen and only 65 other members, all outstanding talents in their fields from painters Lucian Freud and Sir David Hockney to acclaimed actress Dame Judi Dench.

The star - who was awarded a knighthood in 1990 - received the honour from the Queen.

Sir Ian, an Oscar-nominated actor, is also a founder member of the gay rights organisation Stonewall established in 1989.

He's known around the globe for his role as Wizard Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, which earned him an Oscar nomination in 2002. His other nomination was in 1999 for Gods and Monsters.

*waits for gramma to stop squealing*

And, apparently, Richard Griffiths ("Uncle Vernon" from Harry Potter fame), received an OBE.

The Queen... [In reply to] Can't Post

...is starting to look significantly older than I'm accustomed. :(

I hope it's just a trick of the lens and her health is well.

What a great honor [In reply to] Can't Post

for him to receive. IMO, he is one of the best, if not the best, and most competent, intelligent actor I've ever seen. Well-deserved, Sir McKellen!

She's eighty-two [In reply to] Can't Post

She seems to be in excellent health for her age. Still seems to be doing a full-time job of travelling and taking part in ceremonial events. As it happens, she's due to be visiting my home village of Longridge in Lancashire today - visiting a traditional dairy - as well as making other visits in the city of Preston nearby.

Her mother lived to the age of 101, and stayed pretty active until close to the end of her life. So I don't think we need to worry too much about the Queen yet!

...and the sails were drawn up, and the wind blew,
and slowly the ship slipped away down the long grey firth;
and the light of the glass of Galadriel that Frodo bore
glimmered and was lost.

Yes [In reply to] Can't Post

Whenever I see her on the telly I always think she looks pretty good. She is still busy and active.
I have some sort of a soft spot for the Queen, despite the fact that I am one of those upstart republican colonials. Wink

Well if I were Queen . . . [In reply to] Can't Post

I'd make him one of my Companions too!

"Nine Companions...." [In reply to] Can't Post

"You shall be the Fellowship of the Queen!"

The audacious proposal stirred his heart. And the stirring became a song, and it mingled with the songs of Gil-galad and Celebrian, and with those of Feanor and Fingon. The song-weaving created a larger song, and then another, until suddenly it was as if a long forgotten memory woke and for one breathtaking moment the Music of the Ainur revealed itself in all glory. He opened his lips to sing and share this song. Then he realized that the others would not understand. Not even Mithrandir given his current state of mind. So he smiled and simply said "A diversion.
